Hey all. In January my friend's husband is starting up a brand new D&D campaign and I'm having trouble deciding on a Class to use. I've never actually played before, but I know the general concept of things. Is there any Class that might be, I don't know, more beneficial for a new baby player like myself?
An easy class to pick up is Barbarian or Fighter.
Magic, no matter the game is a bit harder to play and requires more experience.

Curses, I like to set things on fire when I have the option. But I'd prefer to not, you know, die my first combat round. Thanks for the input. I'll do some more digging into those classes.
What version of D&D?
The latest edition, 5th edition, is very new player friendly and you could rock out a sorcerer or warlock without any real trouble.

I don't...actually know. I don't think it's 5e because I don't think the DM likes it very much, but I don't think he's ever said which edition. Maybe 4th?
Well, there's nothing that says you can't set things on fire without magic! That said, I agree with Sir_Grey: magic classes require keeping track of many more things so not always a good idea to try as your starting class. If your DM allows Feats, though, you could take Magic Initiate feat. It lets you have some magic while still being a non-magical class. Here's the details: http://engl393-dnd5th.wikia.com/wiki/Feats.
That way, you can learn the base rules and get your feet wet with magic mechanics!
On top of that, it can be wild fun playing as a Fighter or a Rogue with a few small spells at their disposal. Never played a Barbarian, personally, so I don't know how that's like.

If it is 5th edition, the Fighter class has a leveling path called the Eldritch Knight. You keep the basic Fighter class, and gain access to magical spells and cantrips, which are magical attacks that you can perform whenever you please and have no limit. If you are new to the system, you cannot go wrong with the Eldritch Knight Fighter!
