"History is a circle. It goes in one direction only to end up back where it started. Is there a way to break the cycle? The real question you should be asking yourself is whether or not we should break the cycle at all."
You are a member of the Overmind. This speech you'd heard a thousand times before in similar debates argued over the past few years. But it was a topic nobody could agree upon. Some believed history needed a guiding hand to break free of its unending cycle. Others thought it best to trust in the nature of the universe to keep order. So long as they lived, consensus would never be reached.
Strange to be arguing a point when you know you're going to wake up and not remember any of it. Everyone here lives two lives: one in the dream world, and the other in the Overmind. You can hardly remember the dream world when you're here... but you also forget the Overmind once you're there.
Defining reality is tricky business. It's also an uncomfortable one. When you wake up, you're whoever you happen to be - an average person living a life you recognize as yours. But, here, you're only an idea - a soul without an identity; a set of beliefs and thoughts bundled without memory.
So when you learn that you can wake up as anyone, anytime and anywhere, who will you be? What would you do? The values and personality that makes you will go wherever you do. So will you be the one to protect the cycle... or break it?
OOC:
Hiya! So, I've been itching to do a time travel-centric RP again for a while, but I was fumbling around trying to fit it into an interesting narrative. But after months of fine-tweaking, I think I've finally done it!
Melding sci-fi and fantasy elements together, the Overmind is a dream state in which everyone's 'soul' - their personalities, beliefs, values, etc. without the more detailed memories - goes to while their minds sleep. It's actually an alien construct built long ago, based on the mystical concept of ascension... but that's a looong story, best suited for another paragraph.
Here's the kicker: the Overmind is also a nexus in time and space. You can leave it and appear anywhere at anytime. Where you appear, it'll be as if you'd always been there. What happens next is up to you - or the people who told you this in the first place. Will you change history, or protect it from those who try?
Almost any setting is possible, but I'm particularly aiming to put it in the enormous timeline I finished some months ago. I thought it'd be interesting to see how others' characters might affect or take part in any of the events!
And no, you don't need to read the whole thing. You'd be crazy if you did. Almost as crazy as the one who compiled and wrote it.
You can either choose an event you find interesting, or we could randomize it and see where the wind takes us!
I don't have any posting requirements and the genre is variable. But I prefer 1x1, if possible.
(on a different topic, why's Ms. Frizzle pointing at the 'close topic' button?)
