Water, Fire, Ice, Plants, Electricity, you name it. These are separate kingdoms based off of the actual elements. What happens if these kingdoms don't get along with one another? What happens if a member from one kingdom ventures into the kingdom of another element? War may break loose. Gather the armies together and get ready for a battle that might end each kingdom all together...
On very, very, rare occasions there may be unexplained, POSSIBLY supernatural events. Minor "environmental" magic. Perhaps implies the existence of a deity or supernatural entity. Or perhaps it's just tricks?
Near future, perhaps cloning and genetic manipulation
More combat than not. The setting may be at war, and the characters will likely get involved whether or not they seek it out.
