Personally speaking, it is my first time in any kind of RP situation: as it was recommended for me a while ago. Anyways, for possibly any indecisive and clueless rpers out there, could some from the community explain how to rp, maybe even with an example: something just to show what to expect. Any help would be greatly appreciated to see, at least for myself, if its something I'd enjoy. Thank you ahead of time!
rp, in its simplest terms, is a collaborative effort between two or more writers. you usually only control the characters you have made, but in absolute freeform, anyone can control anyone's characters (it's pretty uncommon tho - most of us love our characters and want them to be in character 24/7!). there are a lot of different types of rp, though, so i'm not sure if i can give a definitive "here's how!," so i'm gonna describe them and how to go ab them if u get my drift

in one on one rp, you can either mash two of your own characters together first (once you've approached someone to rp), or you can create a world and plotline that you want to create characters for. from there, you both just write it out using your respective characters. depending on how you two wanna play, you can either treat the story like a game of d&d or just treat it like a narrative that switches viewpoints w each new point. it all just depends on what u wanna do.

i haven't been in a whole heck of a lot of group rps because the ones i was in were not fun, but i'm just gonna tell u what ik lol. group rps are where multiple people are playing however many characters. most groups follow a set rotation, where people post in a certain order. the story is developed either by creative writers coming up with twists they can do autonomously or by the original creator, who has already planned out a story or who has assumed the role of the plot twister.

it's p important to maintain contact with your partner so that you can talk about what you want to do and let each other know what's going on. i used to set up a story and then cut communication, but that's not as much fun and u also don't get any friends that way, lmao.

that's pretty much all i can think of to explain what it is & how to do it tho.
Graideds pretty much nailed it; it's mutual storytelling and collaborative writing. There's no real 'how' as everyone's style and preferences are different. The only gauge you should use is 'Am I having fun? Are my partners having fun?'.

Excellent points made so far! There are also a handful of articles on RPR for new players, if you haven't read them yet:

As for samples of RP, you're free to peruse any of the IC threads on the forums!

Comments in brackets or parentheses are usually OOC statements.

Thank you, that helps a lot! For a while I've been really shy to really use this site because I've attempted a D&D kinda thing before, and it really wasn't for me. But, a kind of open narrative and open world sounds a lot better for me personally (Now just to find a rp like that, might not try and start one right off the bat). Anyways, that makes me a lil less nervous to rp, thank you!

trust me, it's more common to find narratives than structured stuff here. i've only ever seen around 3 highly structured rps. you p much have to go searching for dungeons and dragons type stuff lmao. just don't feel nervous - we're all here to rp, and we all like to write w people.
