(Apologies if this is a recent subject. I didn't see anything in the thread titles that looked glaringly similar, so I went for it).

This is a thread about the type of character you want to Rp with, and that feel you get when you shelf your main and just play it yourself.

What's a trope/type you just can't get your hands on a quality version of?
I love outcasts, characters who are a bit socially inept and often loners because of how they grew up. This usually takes form in someone who grew up outside of society or was outcast because "their kind" isn't accepted. I like extreme versions of this rather than the usual loner kid at school.

One particular character comes to mind.

He's some young guy who used to be human but became the host of a demon through unclear means. The demon gave him an obsession with power and strength, so he travels all over the world hunting "big names" and dangerous creatures of all kinds. He's especially obsessed with hunting other demons. He never loses fights and he adopted the demon's agelessness, so over decades, he becomes infamous and well known. He is exiled from most villages and the only interaction he gets is from someone who seeks him out to have a target taken down. When he fixates on his target, he goes into a haze and becomes unconscious while the demon takes control and does whatever it needs to do. As a result, he went through the majority of his life in a haze of unconsciousness. His memories are foggy, he can't remember how he came to be this way, and his body has become corrupt and demon-like over time. Not to mention the demon has left a serious impression on his personality.

He doesn't escape this fog until he comes across a "hero" character who manages to defeat him. He obsesses over her as his new target, but fails to defeat her on every encounter and every time she knocks him unconscious, he regains a little more control over himself. She finally gets him to a point where he's back in control of his body but he's stuck in the mindset of a power-obsessed, anti-social 18 year old with no understanding of his emotions or hormones (plus the demon is still there). She tolerates this and offers to train him. Since he can't defeat her, he accepts and they travel together, train together, and take down dangerous foes together all while she teaches him about the world and helps reintegrate him into society.

On the surface, he probably sounds like your typical edgelord character but what makes him so great is the realism. He isn't angsty, dark, and brooding. He isn't emotionless, and there are genuine REASONS for his occasional anger and frustration. The best thing about him is that he actually reflects and tries to understand the world. He doesn't want to go back into that fog, he doesn't want to be a demon, and he actually cares for the hero character even though he's not the best at expressing it (tsundere).

A lot of loner, edgy characters don't seem realistic to me. They're unchanging, there's no real reason for them to be an outcast. There's no reason for their anger, they have no goals, and no drive to ever be anything more than what they are. I always get excited when I run into these characters but every time it's such a huge let down. They're one-dimensional and there's nothing going on in their head. These characters often seem built on the idea that "loner" is a personality type, but it isn't.

My other favorite is Zuko who is sort of like this, but much less extreme. You could also throw the Beast from Beauty and the Beast into this category.

I like characters who are mean, for some reason.
Mean but don't really care or think about it, but they have other positive traits. I don't know why I just like it. Also over protective, that's even better.
I have an undying love for any sassy or overly punny character. Something about the quick wit makes it truly fun for me.

Interesting thread. Though I don't have a preferred kind of character to RP with, I do like myself partners that put some variety into the play. Specially if these contrast with my own character's features.
Anyhow, a more 'solid' preference would be alien characters or original races/species. I'm really into shock of cultures - and cultural shock, consequently - for the same reasons I mentioned earlier.

I'm also a bit fond of partners with well-developed, well-thought furry characters. :^)

I dunno. That's actually a damn fine question. At this point, most of what I would have answered with I've already given a go... but nothing's really clicked. Maybe I'll know it when and where I see it.
Hmm good Q!

Since people have touched on genres I'm all about original superheroes/villains, drow (and I guess any dark fantasy if it isn't just being played for sexual cruelty), cassette futurism.

For character tropes I really like authorities who try to earn respect instead of just expecting it, adventurers with rock-solid principles, well-meaning impostors of various sorts, and 'weak' or otherwise vulnerable characters who more than make up for it in strength of will.
Good question.

For genres, I prefer more of a mixture of mystery, action and horror. Comedy is often forged with characters who 'try too hard' to be funny and I hate it especially when they force their characters to laugh at their own bad jokes. If it's really not funny, don't force yourself to laugh at it- unless your character is supposed to act that way, or they're one of those airhead cheerleaders who think laughing at Mr. Punk's jokes will gain them popularity and a boyfriend. As for romance- I just like the type of anti-hero likes villain while trying to get information from both sides. Neither has to give into the other trope, and I really enjoy the struggle of both sides while they try to maintain their cool and stance while forging a relationship that may break at any time.

As for characters- original vigilantes and smart-ass characters are my favourite so far. When it comes down to adventurers, I find most of them just wanting to 'travel and have fun', while others just want to pursue a 'foreign relationship'. I'd rather have a flirty adventurer who actually wants to get to the gems inside a dangerous mine than have an overpowering girlfriend/boyfriend who will kiss you and provide sexual enjoyment on the way there.
For me, I really enjoy characters who are more focused on the psychological aspect of the character rather than their abilities. I've seen a few characters who try to do this but they just fall short or don't really click with me.
