This Looking For RP topic is marked as closed, meaning it is no longer seeking new players.

Welcome, fans of Ace Attorney and murder mystery games, people who love challenges, riddles and a bit of the ridiculous! I have for you the first of possibly more (if this one goes well) unique Ace Attorney roleplay cases!
If you’re not familiar with the Ace Attorney series, have no worries: This roleplay has no connection to any Ace Attorney canon, and I will explain to you what kinds of sections you will encounter in this RP and how they will work.

ROLEPLAY SECTIONS

INVESTIGATION
The first and most basic aspect of this RP. A murder has happened, so you have to find out what happened exactly by examining every nook and cranny of every place you can find for possible pieces of evidence. The evidence you find will be key to building your version of the events that transpired. Profiles and general information may also be helpful to solving the case, so make sure to thoroughly talk to the witnesses as well!
Will you piece together the true story?
(Any evidence you find will be added to the RP’s starter post so you can access it easily at any time.)

Note:
-Whether or not you find evidence when examining something and what kind of evidence it is is up to the RP Host (aka. me). I will tell you if you found something and what you found. The players are not allowed to make up their own evidence (I may make exceptions for joke evidence if it doesn’t disrupt the flow of the story, but you should still get it approved with me first.).
-Players playing witnesses may provide evidence, but even they can’t make up their own. All they may present is the evidence I provide them with via private messaging.
-Any evidence a player finds (including Info and Profiles) will only be known to the player(s) who found it until the other players find it as well or the finders share it.

PRO-MODE: POWERS
Every player may have one special power that will help them in their investigation. If you don’t want any powers, you don’t need to have one, as this is entirely optional.

A few examples of useful powers:
-A magical glowing stone that shows you if a witness is hiding a secret. If they do, a number of locks appear, and you have to try and break them with evidence to get to the secret.
-A bracelet that lets you see almost unnoticeable ticks and twitches when a witness is lying.
-A computer program that lets you analyze the emotions behind a statement. Maybe you find strange emotions?
-A gadget that lets you visualize the crime before your very eyes so you can try and spot inconsistencies in how the crime happened.
-Playing mental chess on a time limit with an antsy witness.
-BASIC LOGI- *shot*

If you want to use a power in the RP, let me know in a Private Message what kind of power you want to use and how it’s supposed to work. Only if I approve of your power, you can use it.

TRIAL
When all evidence has been found by the players (I will write a post saying so when the players did), the roleplay will switch over to a court segment as soon as everyone has wrapped up with each other.
Here you will have the witnesses you might have talked to in the investigation testify on the stand.

The PROSECUTION’s job here is to keep the witness’s story straight and refute anything the defense may have a problem with, in an effort to convict the defendant who has been arrested as the prime suspect.

The DEFENSE’s job is to find flaws in the witness’s statements and prove that there IS a flaw with evidence. The defendant is the defense’s client, and the defense has to try and prove that the defendant didn’t commit the crime.

The ultimate goal is to find the truth and prove said truth with evidence. The truth will usually be reached by both sides chipping away at contradictions and finding logical explanations for them, filling the holes of the case until the truth is reached.

TESTIMONIES
Beware: Don’t just chip away at every single word the witnesses say. This is mostly limited to their actual testimonies, which usually look something like this:

- - EXAMPLE TESTIMONY - -
1. So, I totally saw the murder.
2. The defendant, that little girl over there, totally stabbed the victim with a knife.
3. There is no doubt that she is the killer!
- - END - -

After maybe having some witty banter among yourselves, the witness will restate their testimony, and at any given statement (That’s why I numbered them) the DEFENSE will have two options to choose from:

PRESS (aka. “Hold it!”)
You can press the witness on a statement to get more information out of them regarding that statement. Example: “[Statement 1] HOLD IT! When was it that you saw the murder?”
Be wary to ask good questions though, as the PROSECUTION still has the ability to shoot you down, like this: “Mr. Court, that question is unneccessary. The autopsy report clearly states the time of death. Obviously the witness must have seen the murder around that time.”

PRESENT (aka. “Objection!”)
When you think you have found a contradiction in the testimony, you can present a piece of evidence against the statement you think it contradicts. You can then proceed to try and make your case-breaking argument, for example: “[Statement 2] OBJECTION! I’m sorry, but the victim wasn’t stabbed with a knife. I have here… the real murder weapon. [Present Bloody Sword] It wasn’t just any small knife that killed the victim, it was a big sword!”
You may have luck with your argument if neither the witness nor the prosecution have an explanation, but most of the time the PROSECUTION will likely have a counterargument like: “OBJECTION! So what does this change? The victim was still stabbed, and the defendant’s prints were found on the sword, if I recall correctly. The defendant is still guilty without a doubt!”

Note:
-Not all witnesses always lie. If the defense finds no fault in the testimony, they can always end their questioning of the witness.

Testimonies will likely change with every contradiction presented, and the PROSECUTION has the opportunity to call other witnesses if they deem it neccessary. When one side is out of arguments and can no longer uphold their case, the other side usually wins. There may be special situations though.
When one side wins, the case is considered closed. If you found the truth? Who knows? The RP enters its end phase in any case. (Yes, this RP will have an end.)

Sometimes, both sides can be at a stalemate. If it can’t be broken, another day of investigation will be allowed. Maybe new things will come to light? When all NEW evidence has then been found again, the players will once again return to court.
WARNING: The Investigation-Trial circle can’t be repeated more than thrice! The third trial session will always be the last.
THE ROLES

DEFENSE
A team usually consisting of about 1-3 players. Members of the defense team are allies with each other and can share their findings among themselves without worries. The prosecution is their enemy, so leaking information to them is usually not helpful to the defense. In court the defense team works together to try and defend the defendant from the prosecution’s charges.

PROSECUTION
A team usually consisting of about 1-3 players. Members of the prosecution team are allies with each other and the detective and can share their findings among themselves and with the detective without worries. The prosecution chooses their main suspect as the defendant (this has to happen at any point before the first trial segment) and questions and prepares witnesses to prove the suspect’s guilt. The defense is their enemy, so leaking information to them is usually not helpful to the prosecution. In court the prosecution team works together to try and prove that the defendant is the guilty party.

DETECTIVE
The detective is an individual who works for the prosecution and usually has the most basic facts of the case ready for them. Sometimes the detective is a trustworthy person who keeps their mouth shut to the enemy and who the prosecution can trust in; sometimes they are a bumbling fool who runs their mouth to any old bystander. In any case, the detective is normally the most honest neutral and factual party between defense and prosecution and can investigate more unique things like blood DNA and fingerprints on any side’s request.
The detective will be played by me when the user cast is small, but when the number of players is bigger, one of the users can take this role as well and will then be working closely with me via Private Messages.

WITNESSES
People who usually saw the crime or are connected to it in some way. They could be individuals from any walk of life, like serious scientists, unlucky police guards, eccentric clowns or annoying old hags. Some of these witnesses might be pleasant to deal with, most will probably not. Still, their stories decide a majority of the case, as their testimony (and the evidence) is all the defense and prosecution have to go on to solve the case.
With a small player group, I will take over the witnesses and use the case’s pre-determined cast of witnesses I prepared beforehand.
If the player group is bigger, I might allow other players’ characters to take over witness roles. They will then work closely with me via Private Messages and be told by me what they generally witnessed. No worries, I will not force anyone to act in a certain way, only dump information on you you need to know.

JUDGE
This character is only relevant for the trial segments and usually doesn’t even appear during the investigation. They mediate the trial proceedings, hear both the defense and prosecution and give a final verdict for the defendant to be either “Guilty” or “Not Guilty” when they feel like they have heard enough. The judge character should ideally be fair and give both sides a reasonable chance.
In a small player group, I will take over the role of judge. If the group is bigger, a player may be allowed to take over this spot. As the judge is normally not relevant until the trial segment, this role is also pretty good to assign to late joiners.
These are the basics of how this roleplay will go. If there are ever any questions, don’t hesitate to ask!

Now, for the first case, I present you with this scenario:

Murder at a Cosplay Convention! Bob Nightingale, a cosplayer cosplaying a villainous knight, has been killed in a locked dressing room. Who was with him in that room at the time? What was even going on in there? What did the witnesses see? How did it even come to the murder? And most importantly: Who is the true killer? It’s up to you to find out the truth behind this case!

(2.)
(3.)

PROSECUTION
1. GetDunkDawn (Might be moved to Witness)

Magic 10%
On very, very, rare occasions there may be unexplained, POSSIBLY supernatural events. Minor "environmental" magic. Perhaps implies the existence of a deity or supernatural entity. Or perhaps it's just tricks?
Technology 50%
Modern
Combat 20%
A peaceful setting, but with a chance for small fights and struggles to break out on a very small scale.
I want in this so very badly! As a former player of Ace Attorney online, this should be up my alley!

I'm usually Judge or Prosecution there, so for here I'd like to try my hand at the defense.

You're signed up!
Ooooh! Ace Attorney-ish RP! this sounds great, sign me up!

Which side do you wanna join? Defense or Prosecution?
If I can be a witness, that'd be great, but otherwise, prosecution
christophr Topic Starter

I'll keep that in mind. For now we need the Def and Pro Teams the most, so I'll put you into Prosecution. Should we get a healthy number of members coming in on the Pro side, I'll shove you over into a witness role.
Sweet merciful gods above if I smashed the reply button any harder I'd have broken my computer, no doubt.

I love, love, love Ace Attorney and don't even get me started on how much of a crush I have on Nahyuta and Dhurke. It isn't entirely filled, so I'll be Prosecution, but if it ever does get packed, is there anyway I could be detective?
I see! So I have TWO adversaries so far!

Also--on another note; shouldn't the magic be like, 10% or something because of divination and the like?

@Kamui IF it gets packed, I suppose I could make you detective. I'll put you into Pro for now though.
(lol all Pros so far want possibly out into another role XD)

@Majo_Ellen
I suppose you have a point. It may not be directly connected to the Ace Attorney canon and I don't expect divinations in this case, but I AM allowing lawyer powers, and those may be magical. So, I'll update it I guess.
Have not done any of this stuff before but I think I can be a detective or a witness! really seems intresting

Hmm... Would you feel confident enough to join one of the investigation teams (Defense/Prosecution), Jinx...?
christophr Topic Starter

Alright, let's do a rolecall of who is still in, and if no problems arise, I suppose we can start.

Also, do you guys want an OOC thread with the RP?
hmm...I guess I could and sure lets have a OOC forum
Still in~!

And, I prefer separate OOC and RP, since it'll get flooded with OOC real quick, I bet.
I am still in.
christophr Topic Starter

@GetDunkDawn You still in this? If so, please reply here saying so, otherwise I'll have your space cleared.

@JinxTheWerewolf What side would you be more comfortable with? Defense or Prosecution?

Majo and Kamui, please confirm that you are still present for this, just in case.

If these things are sorted out, we can start.
(Totally didn't forget about RPR during my two-week vacation, no siree!)
