I won't go into details about which genres to focus on or what types of rp/game/other mediums they may belong in. I'd rather you just give me the best answer you think applies, and why. If they're ones you've made up, even better.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of the Berserker Mage. In the lore I've crafted, the general idea is that they're those who've studied magic to such an extent that they are driven mad when they don't have a steady amount to keep them in combat shape. When in their berserker state, such mages will use spells only possible through sheer instinct and cannot be taught through common means like books or practice. These spells tend to be viciously violent to target, user, and surroundings, relying on the most crude of desires imaginable to draw their power. After use, they tend to be filled with a sense of euphoria that becomes addictive, and so many such types will starve themselves of magic just to re-engage that type of casting on a regular basis.

Over time, a berserker mage's magic will begin to take a personality of its own, slowly devolving the mage's mind to the point that only those urges and instincts remain, and the two become one. However, at that point, the magic will have eaten most of the bodily functions that allow for a being to operate normally in a healthy capacity. Rehabilitation is possible, but approaching a berseker mage is like trying to fill your stomach by eating barbed wire.

Those who've touched this stage and come back are my absolute favorites, because they often can have other classes associated with them in odd ways, like Chef or Performer that make them both humorous and dangerous to use.
In Pathfinder/D&D, I like playing Druids because they can fill a lot of gaps in a party. I also like shapeshifting.

If I have my choice, I love to play Wizards/Sorcerers, or even Rogues*. Having magic is just plain fun and so is blowing stuff up. Plus, the whole 'keys to the universe' thing about arcane magic. Rogues are a lot of fun also but only under a good GM, who lets you use them as they were meant to be used. I've had GM's before who would randomly have sneak attacks fail or get mad with consistently high skill checks, despite that being the Rogues 'thing'. I get it if a mob is immune to sneak attack or I didn't get the flank or whatever... I just don't like it when I know it's because I came up with a good strategy, positioned myself correctly, and now we're making mincemeat of the monster that was supposed to be tougher. I suppose what I'm saying is I don't like being punished for using good tactics.

But what I most often end up playing is Cleric because everyone else snags the other roles and if we don't have a Cleric then we're all going to die on the first adventure. I'm a team player so if no one else wants to play the healbot, then I find myself doing it.

I've wanted to do a Battle Skald, Barbarian/Bard combo, for a while now though!
My favorite class is Samurai, but I've been playing for so many years that I have a character for nearly every class their is. Though I do prefer to play melee characters. Most of my characters on here are D&D characters I have played and continue to play because I love them so much.

You know, I've only ever watched D&D played? It seems like a lot of fun, and I recommend that if you're a fan you check out "D&D : Gangster Edition". As both an rper an... other titles... I can say it's pretty accurate in the best of ways.

That said, I'm fond of sorcery as well! Love it, as an art form as well as a way of doing business. I usually find myself more intrigued by "how" magic works or how it's "used"... but that case isn't always so. Any class that has that focus works is one I like to see in use, so long as their are some ground rules to work with.

As for melee fighters, that takes me back. I started off in the combat circuit of things, you know? Forum posts about warring families and all that. From fists to swords to just plain knocking a guy into a well with a baseball bat, I got my kicks that way. Yet... I just realized I've never done a straight up samurai before. Huh. Any tips? I may need to know for future concepts.
