Just a small 'take the first letter of each book' but not All of them, just the odd-even ones
like
PTABARE / PTABACE
ETIT
or something
Pffffffffffffff, well, I killed one of the folk blocking the boat, but seems like I died right after xD Oh well, avenge me
EDIT: 10-ish hours later
These 3 are not the answer it seems

Well, I tried converting these to binary in various ways (using the number of letters in each one, with an odd number being 1 and even being 0), but I'm not getting any lettering, just gibberish.
Attempting to analyze that now.
Anyone else having any luck?
Am still mostly downed and there are enemies, so I cant try any of the 'words'
It's only the clue 'these columns have spines' that make me agree that it must be related to books, but I think another - 'the way this answer is merged together is quite regular' - is pretty vital and suggests that it doesn't involve thinking too awful hard in terms of decoding or strings of letters. It could have something to do with titles or authors or subject, but I'm not seeing anything that pops out at me yet. 'course I could be horribly off track. :'D
Are there any other bookshelves / books to look at...?

Message in a bottle!
"Only the first letter on each column matters for the Alpha symbol."
"Only the first letter on each column matters for the Alpha symbol."
That sounds like the first letter of each book, maybe. But I thought we tried that aaages ago??? Or... did we... did we not?!?!
I tried a couple of permutations of them, yeah, basically variations on whether or not articles counted for the titles. (A Journey, The Great, etc.) Had no luck with that, but obviously the combinations weren't right.
Maybe... Maybe we're looking at strings of numbers instead of letters? Convert each letter into its number equivalent?
Hmmmm. Maybe?
Well, now we know that only the first letter matters. And if the columns are books, then we can go per book. So it's SOMETHING to do with: PTEATBIATCE
Well. Unless Caribbean doesn't count because it's partially cut off. But because it's written as "Caribbean, Pirates of the" it seems to imply to me that the C is important.
Oh, cripes, I went to fix a cup of coffee while mulling, and apparently my brain had enough auxiliary power left to pour the cup of coffee and take a sip, but not enough power to put cream and sugar into the thing, bleh bleh bleh.
Okay, so what we have with the first letters only is:
P_TEAT BIA(T?)C_E if going by immediate first letter, or
P_TEAG BIJ(T?)C_E if leaving out articles.
_s are the blank books - not sure if they count, but they're there - and the (T?) is the tome of alien languages, not sure if it counts either based on clue one.

Sounds good!
Hrmmm. I would for now assume we're including the articles, since it doesn't mention excluding them. Buuut I could be wrong.
Well, I mean, we might as well throw different things at the wall and see what sticks, at this point. We can definitely go on the assumption that the articles are the important bit for starters, though.
Sounds good!
Lemme put away all this leather I was hacking at. Brb!
Back!
