Ashen clouds coated the usual blue sky and looked over the lands. Lightning danced in brilliant sparks in the dark mist that loomed in the sky. Nala rested her head on the cool frame of the pale glass window. Snow coated the ground and icicles hung from the tree branches and eaves of houses and village huts. Her eyes narrowed as she stared at the sky far away and above and she knew another winter storm was coming. She could hear her father shuffling behind her as her eyes looked distant in thought.
"Sweet, are you ok?" Her father asked and slightly snapped her thoughts. She hummed a response as she pushed her cheek against the window to get a better view of the storm that was coming in from the east. Nala heard her father grumbled and then his loud and stern voice, "Nala!" He didn't tell nor did he talk normal, it was loud and stern as he knew she would pay attention now. Her head whipped around and she looked at her father, her eyes locking with his. "Yes father?" She questioned gently, her voice like the warm gentle breeze as if carried a delicate feather in the wind and through the clouds up above.
"I asked if you were ok?" He asked again, his eyes never leaving hers. As she heard his words, she chuckled lightly and rolled her eyes. "I'm fine! You need to stop worrying!" She looked at her for a few more minutes and then grunted a approval and turned his body to return to his work. Nala watched as she sweeped under the old, rickety table and chairs and then moving around the kitchen of the small hut. She examined the hut and sighed.
Was they poor because of the debt? Or was it because no one wanted to hire her for a job because she was the cowards daughter? She really didn't know anymore, but she did know that they were poor and running out of money to even feed themselves.
