Some plots I'd like to work out.
1 When character A does not believe a close loved one died a natural death they investigate, almost into the realm of the obsessive. A certain group of people becomes a likely bunch of suspects. One of them, character B, is very eager to get out and decides to play double agent by promising their group they'll keep an eye on A, while they tell A that they can help find out more about their poor deceased loved one.
2 Character A has an ability of some kind they can't really control. They're desperate to find out more about what they are and what they can do. Character B is tasked with tricking A into coming along to a place where B's colleagues can safely 'exterminate' A. B, however, can no longer look at A as 'just a danger' while they're on the road and decides to go rogue.
3 A demon, character A, has struck a deal with character B. B, however didn't word that deal thoroughly enough, so now, while A does have to contractually work together with B, nothing stops A from setting one hell of a trap once their service is done.
4 Character A is undercover in a gang that behaves differently from the usual territorial gangs the city deals with. Character B doesn't trust A from the start and tries their best to keep them on strict need-to-know basis, so that the gang's unusual activities won't come to light.

Magic may be accepted as truth but is not common. It might be harnessed only by specific beings. Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones.
Modern
Combat is expected as part of the storyline but it won't dominate the plot.
