OOC THREAD CAN BE FOUND HERE: https://www.rprepository.com/community/forumthread.php?t=55384
RP premise/lore summary:
Tordithas, a world that has been steeped in shadow for as long as anyone can remember. In this realm of eternal dusk, functioning society clings to life by the light of towering spires, were a substance only known as ‘Radiance’ is ensconced. Radiance, said to be raw crystallization of the mythical daylight, the lifeblood of commerce and comfort of intelligent life, the only thing that keeps the creatures of the dark at bay. Without Radiance, the unending hoards of lightblind beasts would overtake and consume what little civilization remains. These are the immutable facts of reality for the inhabitants of Tordithas, and so long as the Radiance did not falter, survival was assured.
Unfortunately, complacency is often an assured outcome as a result of prolonged safety. As the Radiance of the towers dimmed after centuries of neglect, the present generation went on with their lives none the wiser. That is until a bizarre entity summons several of Tordithas’ inhabitants to bring back Radiance from the depths of their ever dimming world.

Rules/Requirements:

This roleplay will be a long term one, so be prepared to do some problem solving and teamwork with other players. Please be considerate of people’s time, if you don’t think you can keep up the pace of a post at least once every two to three days minimum, I can put your character on hold to allow someone else to join until you’re able to get back in the game. Additionally, please try not to doublepost. If no one has responded in a while (about 6 hours) then you can make another, but until then please use the edit button.
I’m looking for 5-7 people at a time maximum, since I’m going to be doing more of prompting and responding to people than playing myself.
I’d like to be flexible with what characters are allowed, but just in case, please submit a character for review first. If I give the ok, you can use them in this RP, and you can proceed to making their stat sheet. Please pick characters that will be involved! Nobody likes trying to motivate a party consisting of lone wolves! Lastly, please write the characters as if Tordithas is their home! It'll make their reasons for what they do have meaning and consequence! Pick any one of the places on the map that's labeled as a hometown if you'd like!
BE WARNED! Your characters are not invincible here. If you join, your character is subject to the dangers of possible death by dice roll (or rather the outcome of it). There will be violence and profanity. If your character is caught in a conflict, don’t start godmodding just because you’d like them to 'win'. Be fair, be respectful.
This roleplay will be structured somewhat freeform, consisting of part player response to one another, part OP(that’s me) response where I’ll prompt important things of note where players can choose how they want to handle the situation via dice roll and I’ll tell them the outcome. Posts can be varied length, either short, two to three sentences, or a couple paragraphs. So long as your responses aren’t tiny or walls of text, you’ll be fine.
This roleplay will be loosely using dice mechanics for important situations. If you’ve never played a game requiring them, don’t worry! I’ll let you know what you’ll need to roll for what action and when. Please create for yourself a 5-stat character sheet, consisting of:
STR(physical power)
DEX(dodgyness/acrobatics/jumping height)
INT(booksmarts/memory)
WIS(practical knowledge/ willpower)
CHA(Persuasiveness/diplomacy)
You will have 6 points total to distribute into any stat you like, so long as that does not exceed a value of 5. This will determine how well your character does in that stat when the time comes to do something. You will roll a dice pertaining to the most relevant skill. You won't need to use this outside prompts for things like combat with creatures or handling NPCs.
If your character is a potential magic user, please refer ro this doccument here for more detail on how spells and the like will be handeled:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/14lkp2n8kYc9sQlYpLbDJVVnl0GjkyW7aMSQECP-3L5I/edit?usp=drivesdk
Here’s an example scenario of how prompts will work:
OP- “Character A is staring across a 15 ft chasm. There is no light at the bottom, and no foreseeable way to create a bridge or tie a rope.”
Player of Character A- “Character A sizes up the chasm and takes a few steps back before taking a running leap at the chasm’s edge.” Character A rolls a dice using their dex skill bonus, their result is a 4, plus the 3 in Dex on their sheet.
OP-”Character A makes it to the other side barely. Small stones break loose from the edge where they landed, clattering ominously into the depths below.”
Plausible legends of ancient magic, but current magic is not common.
Renaissance
Unrest may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat may be summarized.
Details: Occasional dice use, adjustable length posts, long-term RP partner preferred.
5 stats, 6 points?
So 4 stats at Rating 1 and 1 stat at a Rating 2?

Yes, that's right. You can keep a stat as 0 too, as putting a 1 to it only gives you a small boost. so you could even have a spread like: 0,2,1,3,0 or 2,2,1,0,0, etc. As long as your point total equals 6, and nothing is above 5, anything goes.

Trine would be fine, as long as you can explain how a robotic cat exists in a world with a sort of Victorian era level of technology. Perhaps made by a lonely genius hermit, or cast into that world by accident through some scientific mishap. I'll leave it up to you.
Sounds dope, and right up my alley.
At the risk of embarrassing myself sense I've made some assumptions on how the world works, here's a mage idea.

This seems like a wonderful lovechild of D&D and classic RP and I am here for it. 100%
Any race, or how do you want to play it? I can make a new character for this if Algae doesn't work out. I also have Clarissa, who can be tweaked for a more serious questline.

Mages do exist in Tordithas, however present magic users are far less impressive than their ancient kin due to restrictions of materials and an overall decline of power. Gone are the days of casting devastating fireballs and stunning crowds with impressive lightshows and charm laced words. So far your character sounds reasonable, but keep in mind, if he want to cast any of the 'brighter' spells he is capable of, he will need a small chunk of radiance to draw from, and that doesn't come cheap. I'd think it'd be fair if he had a few nuggets on hand secreted away for his use though, so go for it!

Yes! It is losely D&D inspired, although the prompts that require dice won't be as heavy or restrictive. It's mainly there to add an element of suspence and uncertainty.
Any race is fine within reason, and Algea will be right at home. Tordithas' oceans are just as dangerous as the surface, but I believe it said somewhere that Algae's speciese is slightly bioluninescent? On their own they'd be vunerable, but with enough of their kind together in some kind of settlement, even oceandwelling lightblind creatures would stay away. So her coming from the sea would still make sense in the setting. So pick whichever character you'd like!
Perfect! That's half of what makes dice games so fun, the chance. Thank you so much, I would love to use her and can customize her for this however you see fit.
Yes, her species is bioluminescent and very true to group mentality in the original concept. Also, however you want to rule magic and classes I will adjust to. I don't plan to overpower the group if everyone else stays fairly magic-free.

Since you're a little familiar with things lile D&D, I would say a good way to scale what's acceptable magic wise would be things ranging from Cantrip to 2nd level spell, with 2nd level spells being the high end of what magic users in this world are capable of now, and things like cantrips are what most remaining magic users are capable of. So long as she is within that range, you're free to magic it up. My only restriction is on any sort of light-making spell requiring a piece of Radience to cast it. Other stuff lile what would normally be a class or feat is pretty open ended. : )
Good to know, sort of what I was going for but I'll make sure to emphasize the magi's limitations. Maybe I should consider buffing me boy with some knife play or double down on INT and wait for late game to be of real use. I'll wait and see who else is on board. Thanks for having me~
Anything you have else to say on magic would interest me. I'll go check out what some 2nd level cantrips are. I've never had the chance to play DnD but I know some offhand knowledge of how it works.
Do non-Light based spells work off of "mana" instead?

Perfect! I will make up a quick reference for cantrips and low level things to refer back to. I'm very excited for this! Oh and I'll add the stats to her write up as well.

https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Spells%20List#content here's a site that lists all standard edition spells from 5th editiin d&d. Any spell from canrip (which are unlimited) to 1st(limited) or 2nd level(limited) are available. In standard d&d, the amount of non-cantrip sells a character can use per day depends on their character's class. However, I'm going to play it by ear and say any spellcasting character would be as if they were a 3rd level wizard/sorcer/bard etc(class level and spell levels are not the same mind you).
I guess in short, assume your character is not restricted by class. I'll clarify later but you can safly assume either wisdom, charisma or Intelligence is what you use to cast spells, and the rest is just for other types of interaction based on its function. Since you use the word mage for your character, I'd expect they'd either be a wizard or a sorcerer, wizards use intelligence(requiring a book of spells), sorcerers use charisma (their willpower and inner magic made manifest). Whichever is fine so long as its one of those three stats.
As for spells... I'll make an offical doccument going over how many per day a character gets and how many if each. Being generous, I'd say everyone can use four 1st level spells, and two second level spells. In standard d&d, you get all your spells back with a long rest, about 8 hours, but I'll shorten it to 4 just to keep the pace rolling.
And bear in mind, this is all so plauers don't go overboard, I won't even enforce these rules strictly if it makes the story flow better. So don't sweat the details too much, I trust people here will be sensible and gague what to do and when the rp as it goes on.
As I said, I'll probably crank out my thoughts onto a document page people can view and refresh on anytime they want during the actual RP.

Thanks! I'll probably have a doccument done before tomorrow on some of the more nuanced details, but I won't rulemonger it because I want people to be free and have flexibility to do what they want too. Unless things get whacky, I'll let a spare spell or two slip under rhe radar without complaint. Mainly, the spells list is just to gice people an idea for describing their spells and gague how steong or weak it is.

Works for me, and I'm all for a little on the fly adjustments for a better story, with gm permission of course. Since this is a fantasy world, I'll wait for your document before really finalizing things. Are you making up spells for your world specifically or is it safe to use D&D materials? Or could a few reasonably made up spells be negotiated later on?
After your reply on this, I'm done monopolizing the forum, promise!

No worries! You can comment here all you want if you still have questions. I'll make an offical OOC post later tomorrow that will infodump all important developments and details.
Here's what I threw together to try and answer some of your quetions. I hope it helps! https://docs.google.com/document/d/14lkp2n8kYc9sQlYpLbDJVVnl0GjkyW7aMSQECP-3L5I/edit?usp=drivesdk
Thanks, I like this loose approach for a freeform game. The guiding cantrip/spells are giving me context. Can't think of much else to ask at the moment. I'll be tinkering while we wait for some big ol strong swordsmen or a healer. Or 4 more mages. Either or.

If it helps, Algae is a ranged damage and support, but if it comes down to it, I have a healer I could switch to based on group need.
I'll most likely be running a lil bit of damage, mostly crowd control, and some utility to put it into d&d perspective. Id guess variety will be more for flavor than anything, but there ya go for anyone deciding what to play.
