I've been roleplaying for over fifteen years, and searching for Rp has always been a struggle- in no small amount due to the fact that it's hard to communicate what you want without making a dozen potential partners feel incompatible. Writing a search ad sometimes feels like trying to give and pass a pop quiz.
Roleplayers are shy, insecure creatures. (At least, that's what I've noticed). You have to put out food and wait, but you gotta put out their brand.
For example, when I advertise for kid characters I often get players interested in a much darker storyline than I am, but I can't seem to figure out how to rule out the dark without omitting the drama. I also have a character that yells and is grumpy, but I think when I point that out I give the wrong impression.
A friend and I were joking about this earlier. It's like those absurdly specific laws you see, where you can tell they had to keep adding to it to cover the loopholes. That's what my ads are starting to feel like. Layer after layer of 'but, also, however...'.
If I'm too specific, I get no replies (or, god forbid the ones that don't read the post at all. More often those).
Not specific enough, and I get coconuts thrown at my head.
(For those reading that may have replied to those posts, its worth pointing out that I've gotten many amazing offers that just weren't the click I was looking for, as well.)

Please keep the conversation light and constructive. I'd like this to be a thread to give and get help.

I once knew someone who called searching "Roleplay roulette", they looked down on just about everyone who replied to their ads but the roulette metaphor really struck me anyways: for the best odds at winning you have to compromise, and if you'll settle for nothing less than the jackpot you'd better be ready to keep spinning. The most sensible bet is somewhere between those extremes, also the house (ooc drama) always wins.
