WE ARE NOT TAKING ANYMORE PLAYERS AT THIS TIME

I’m looking to create a free-form soap-opera style game set in the summer of 1982 in a small town in the US with a heavy focus on role-playing, storytelling, and character development. This is not a science fiction or fantasy game. There will be no magic or anything supernatural, but the plots should be over-the-top involving mysteries, romance, betrayals, revenge, affairs, and kidnappings. I'd like to focus on a group of connected characters in their late teens or early twenties (ideally out of high school) as opposed to turning this into just a small town simulation with lots of individual plots going on in the same setting.

The ideal partners for this game will have either experienced the 80s first-hand or have an above-average knowledge and interest in the 80s including familiarity of pop culture, how people dressed, the social mindset and a good grasp of the technology at the time. If you read the book "Ready Player 1" and related to the level of detail about 80s life presented, you are the kind of writer I'm looking for.

Aside from setting the game in the United States and specifying the game starts in June of 1982, I want the state and regional details of the fictional town we'll create to be a group discussion. I have specific reasons for the year I have chosen but am willing to negotiate to some degree if there is a strong justification for changing it. I'm not interested in setting the time frame outside of the 1980s, however.

Out-of-character plotting is important and critical to a successful game. I’m looking for collaborative writers that will help to create the specifics of the setting and willing to brainstorm on an on-going basis to develop the plot and that is open to exploring ideas and revisiting plans as the game develops. I have found time and time again that “Let’s just see what happens” ends in a train wreck. Regular communication is vital to understanding where a plot idea is headed and making sure everyone is on the same page. If you hate brainstorming and plotting and don't like discussing things out-of-character that unfortunately is a deal breaker.

Posting: You must be able to post at least every three days and a minimum of twice a week for each major character you create. Three to four times a week for each character would be ideal. Of course, it is understood that from time to time real life happens and that you may have to step away due to work, school, vacation or illness. Unless there is an emergency and you are unable to let the rest of the group know, it is expected that you will notify everyone if you are not going to be able to post. If you are extremely busy, travel frequently or not able to make a regular commitment to the game, please do not apply.

What I’m looking for in a writer:

I don’t want to intimidate anyone, but I am very particular about who I work with and take into my games. Please review the notes below and make sure this sounds like a good fit for you before applying.

You need to be an exceptional writer that is articulate and able to write from a third person, past-tense point of view. Your writing needs to paint a vivid scene in your posts that include details about the setting as well as how you portray your characters such as their thoughts, observations, and feelings. I’m not interested in working with writers that only post a sentence or two or who only write dialogue in their posts without any description.

Character development and plot are also essential to me. I am looking for writers that can develop believable, well-rounded, three-dimensional characters. I do not want any “Mary Sues”. That means your character has defined personality traits, specific interests, skills, quirks, and things that are not their forte. One thing I despise is characters that are chameleons. I don’t want a character that morphs into whatever the situation requires at the moment or a character that always happens to have whatever item is needed and drains all of the tension out of a scene by providing an instant solution to the problem. Characters need to have disadvantages such as phobias and negative traits as well. No one should be good at everything. I’d also like for each character to have one secret that has some tie in with their back-story or history that can be woven into the story as a plot point. Keep in mind, a secret is only interesting storywise if it gets revealed at some point.

My goal is to find the right person or people that share my vision and to take this from being "my idea and game" to making it a group collaboration. This is your chance to get in on the ground floor. If you are intrigued and this sounds like a project you’d like to be part of, I’d love to hear your character ideas and plot proposals. I’d be happy to answer any questions to see if we’re on the same page.

Our group is called "Summer of '82" and can be found here: https://www.rprepository.com/g/summerof82
Please note, there are screener questions that must be answered in order to submit an application. It is a good idea to have a character concept in mind before joining. You may use a post from a past game to submit as a work sample. If it is not written from a third-person, past-tense perspective, please edit it before submitting.
Magic 00%
No magic at all.
Technology 50%
Modern
Combat 00%
No combat. If problems arise, players may be expected to solve it without resorting to violence.

Details: Freeform, adjustable length posts, long-term RP partner preferred.

For some reason, it won't let me invite you. You might have to create a character first. Here is our group, apply there and I'll approve you.
