Thekaleidoscope

The year is 23,000 A.L.S (After Last Star) the galaxy is dead, the last star has been extinguished, even so life goes on. On a ringword orbiting an encapsulated black hole the last vestiges of humanity, roughly 50 billion live on. Theirs is a happy existence, a never-ending source of energy from the black hole, a galaxy worth of resources to mine and yet, it feels empty. They are alone, the last memories of a race that once spanned the entire galaxy, now reduced back to a single system.

A fake sky full of stars has been created via holograms in the space around the ring projects faded memories of a once living galaxy. Advertisements offer trips off-world to places only remembered in archives, simulations of a universe that once was. Humanity is alone, no other species to encounter, no way to preserve their memories, they are it, all that is left in a dead galaxy.

Yet... For the last people in their dead galaxy, there are still brewing tensions threatening to exterminate humanity for good. Militant groups are threatening to turn the very source of humanities last grasp on life into the greatest weapon: A black hole bomb.

Their demand? The gifting of the last battleship known as the Last Light, in order to set sail across the dead galaxy. They claim that as the survivors of a once dead empire destroyed a long time ago they deserve the chance to establish some home, others just want revenge.

You will take the place as a crewmember aboard the lost light, the last guardian of peace. Interacting with the remnants of humanity and preventing its final extinction, as well as dealing with any unwanted visitors. Can you preserve the final memories of humanity or will they fade from existence forever?
Magic 00%
No magic at all.
Technology 100%
Far future, perhaps galactic teleporters and fast terraforming
Combat 50%
Combat is expected as part of the storyline but it won't dominate the plot.

Details: Freeform, adjustable length posts, long-term RP partner preferred.

Count me in. I love the idea of existential, post-existence scenarios.

Hey thanks, which character will you be using?

And if you have any questions about the setting please do say so
I'll likely make a new character for the occasion, but bet on Joelle if I don't.

Alright! Well I'll see if anyone else is up for it, before starting the rp

Yeah I am, who are you suggesting?
So, what's the hard limit on technology? I figure given the subjects that would potentially arise out of this RP's concepts, nothing crazy like mechanical bits or cyborgs or whatever without some kind of serious drawbacks, or whatever. Stuff like that.

For technology in this setting, energy isn't a problem, due to the nature of the black hole generator the ringworld is built around, however, materials are more of a problem. As such, most cyborg or mechanical parts would be functional, but looking rather old and definitely not up to date. So if a character would have one a repair kit would be needed to keep them fully going. Kinetic weapons that power off energy are somewhat useful and pack the most punch however ammo is scarce. The most common weapon is energy based laser weapons which fire invisible beams of high powered energy, the downside being for those who can create it, anti-energy armor makes it hard to inflict wounds with these weapons. All fully Ai machines which remain of which there are very few, are very old models mainly built for durability, no zippy speed or newness about them.
Ah. The penrose process. Civilizations at the end of time and the black hole bomb. All interesting stuff.

Invisible lasers? Like Gantz?

Its going off more the idea that firing a laser in a short burst would be moving far too fast for the eye to see, thereby rendering it invisible. Although longer more concentrated blasts would appear as beams, due to speed rendering individual phased shots as blasts merging into each other

But yes also like Gantz
Ooh, I gotcha! So like normal bullets, just lasers.
Lasers are invisible to the eye as the coherent beam would not make contact with the eye unless you were firing into the observer's eye. When you see a laser, say in a lab it is because of the gas the laser passes through refracts some of it, allowing you to see it. In a vacuum and indeed our atmosphere you would not be able to see a laser beam if it passed in front of your eye. Not very cool for the star wars like genre, I admit. I will think about joining.

The beam must be of a wavelength that is visible to humans, and fog or dust scatters the light very strongly so that you can see it. However, even in pure, clean air, you will be able to see a laser beam under certain conditions.Jan 31, 2012

Thank you for that information, I think when doing research for it I got confused when I read stuff about the lasers even when pulsed appearing as a single continuous beam due to speed. So that clears it up a lot for me, also I much prefer the idea of the invisible laser.

Then again I would like to clarify this isn't really a star wars like genre, much more the tale of the last home of humanity and those defending it. Both sides are relatively small in numbers, using the last big stocks of military-grade armour and weapons.
Yeah, I like the invisible lasers thing in the sense that it fits in with the themes. At least in my head it does.

Yeah I think it does too, at least in the context of a more hardish sci-fi that I was going for here. Just sorta matches the feel of the place.
You still looking?

Yeah,

Okay I'll set up the start post of the rp and let you all join in as you wish. Do remember that I will limit those entering to around five to be manageable for me and the restrictions the setting placed on your character, cheers ^^
