Pokémon was my gateway drug to RPing, I remember watching the anime and playing the games when I was younger and I had always imagined how cool it would be if I was a trainer myself, which eventually led to me writing short stories for school and for my own personal use, which soon led to me discovering Facebook RP (which I will never do again), which soon caused me to branch out into other mediums and eventually led me here.
My best friend from a certain state used it as a tool to keep us in contact after I moved. It didn't work so well, but he showed me this cool world where I got to play different people. When he started vanishing during our rps, I branched out to RPH, and when that site went downhill (in my opinion), I looked for other sites, and came across RPR first. I don't like change, and while RPR is changing a little, it holds the same type of writing quality that kept me here in the first place. The atmosphere here is great, and friends you make here tend to stick around ^^
But yeah... A friend got me rping, long story short. I didn't know it was a thing before he introduced me to it.

Haha, I kinda experienced it in a similar way.
As a Pokemon-Player you mostly are forced to own a Nintendo Console. That being said I got into the whole RP-Genre back then in 2014/2015 when, I might be mistaken here, Nintendo launched their social network for WiiU & 3DS called Miiverse. Because I considered it to be an amazing platform back that days I tend to regularly chat with other fans if this games. And one day I just stumbled over the term "RP" and decided to try it out with some fans.
It was love at the first write
Anyway, due to the downfall of the Miiverse (there had been a guideline where you had been allowed to only post 20posts/replies a day, so it particularly destroyed the whole RP scene) and personal circumstances I took a break on it. However, as I noticed myself getting bored lately I decided to give it another shot. And ended up here in the January of this year.
And it is so amazing here! Such a friendly online community ...it's simply magnificent!

I haven't snorted harder in a long while. Could have choked on my soda. Ugh. That was delightful.
I got into roleplaying in my early baby years around 10. That was nearly 18 years ago. It started when my neighbor and I were larping as the Knights of RayEarth. We started writing stories about Inuyasha. It was a turbulent time of intense fantasy and was the only way I felt happy. Roleplaying had been a constant staple in my every day life and I have honestly been roleplaying off and on, but in the background somewhere it never really ended when I wasnt actually writing with another person.
Thank you for this trip down memory lane.
I started off RPing with my Legos before I knew what RP was. A friend of mine and I created nations, storylines, characters... you name it. It was a ton of fun. I did that all through middle school.
We got a computer when I was in high school and I discovered Simming, online Star Wars RP. This was when Phantom Menace was all the rage and I had dial up AOL. So a shout out to anyone here who used to RP in the old Phantom Menace room, lol. ShadaDulin and Human789 are really the only user names I remember. Still, it was a lot of fun.
In high school, I was invited to play D&D 2e and I discovered pen and paper role play. I was hooked. D&D 3e had just come out and I got into it big time. Vampire the Masquerade and other White Wolf lines came next. I tried Rifts also but it wasn't for me. Too complicated. D&D took me through high school and beyond, along with Star Wars added in.
Eventually, my work schedule became such that I couldn't make pen and paper nights anymore. I started looking online to get my fix and found a few websites. I ended up being heavily involved with a World of Darkness one for years before it shut down. I was involved in a few other WoD sites after but eventually found this place. I like the community and ability to customize profiles, so I've stuck around.
I've tried Mythweavers and Roll20 as well but RPR always pulls me back. I also do Google Doc RP from time to time but not as much recently. So that's me, semi-truncated. At this point I've been RPing 20+ years and have no plans to stop.

Same with Star Wars. Seems like it's a popular topic in the thread.
I might possibly be the only person who didn't have a clue what RPing was when it became such a big thing. I used to write on various websites, and all these people would message me and ask if I RPed, and wow I was really confused by it. Till some guy finally told me what it was and got me into this Star Wars group.
It was awful. I didn't have a clue what I was doing. Alot of that time was spent making short posts that just followed everyone else in the story. My poor RP partners.
In fact, the only reason I got back into it was because I found this site and the aesthetic value of it all was too pleasing to me. Being able to store characters is a wonderful gift. But it's been really fun meeting other writing fanatics and understanding different OCs and concepts. Good times.

Honestly, I got into RP by a friend, who showed me the WONDERS of Dungeons & Dragons, along with the card-game Magick: The Gathering. This was around fourteen years ago now (taking into consideration the new year, and how awful it's been on the internet) when I was brought into this world. Tabletop RP was one of the things me and my friends would do every Saturday. The GM would write where we left off on a piece of paper, so we could pick off on where we left off in case we lost anything.
After that, I began doing some stupid things which were probably the happiest days of my life at the time (around six years ago now) when I found out my girlfriend at the time was, actually quite surprisingly, a D&D fan! I invited her to join my friends and me, and she accepted. Now, I never played that shining knight in armor (or in my case- an Elven mage that had a tendency to use potions in overwhelming amounts.) She was decent and knew what to do, so she could handle herself unless she got a low roll, and we used a d20, so she panicked when she got those ones-to-tens. My friends would usually save her because I wasn't the kind to just up and save others. We separated soon after those days and one of my friends hooked up with her. I was ok with it because I realized I just didn't give her a lot of attention. D&D or off table.
THEN! Around two years ago, I got into actual- face-to-face roleplaying. My first time was at PAX West 2012 (I think it was 2012?). Anyway, my friend- who would soon to be my girlfriend to this day (and I'm not being an idiot and actually giving her attention). Anyway, she told me about PAX and how it was basically a gaming convention, so I wasn't sure if they would let me bring my Magick cards. Now, I've been collecting M:TG cards for over my roleplaying years. Probably a good fifteen years ago. Sure, I bought extra sets to actually play with, but I have an entire little cubby I have (more of an oversized drawer) holding a bunch of M:TG cards. ANYWAY- Back to the point. So I decided to get all dressed up, with her help of course (cause I can't do jack by myself) and I ended up becoming my old DnD character, except as a vampire this time (grey skin, red eye contacts, fake long ears- etc. etc.).
And EVEN NOW! Starting early last year I got into, roleplaying in games. World of Warcraft, Skyrim, Diablo (all the way to III (Roman Numeral for 3)) and other games like Black Desert Online (planning on making a character for here with that Character maker.), Tera and Mass Effect. I love video games, I love people and other cheesy phrases. [Insert cheesy phrase here] Now, today I am on RPR writing long paragraphs with my phrase "Give me a paragraph, I'll give you a page. A page for a chapter, and a chapter... for a book." I'll always try my best to give you an equal amount or even more than you've given me- hence my efforts to try and respond to a few lines, ending up giving three maybe four paragraphs.
ANYWHO! That, my friends. Is how I got to here. I apologize this was so long. ;w;

I started in third grade with Warrior Cats, actually. I was new to the school and didn't have any friends, but at the time my entire (32 person) class participated in the same Warrior Cats RP every single recess, so I thought the quickest way to make friends was to join. We had hunting practice (tag), fighting practice (a bunch of 8 year olds sitting in a circle while two or three others wrestled in the middle and pretended to be cats, imagine what a ridiculous sight that was), a hierarchy (the biggest fan was leader), healing (two 8 year olds chewing up random grass, clovers, and leaves we found and spitting them on scrapes). I'm very surprised the teachers never shut it down, but I had a pretty hardcore introduction to RP.
(The clan leader and deputy ended up becoming my best friends for the next, well, 12 years and counting. I win, aggressively ambitious bully who kicked me in the ribs!)

I originally joined a horse breeding site, and played on that for awhile before discovering they have "forums" on there. I discovered rping by joining a "Warrior Cats" rp without really knowing what it was. Apparently I didn't know what "Experienced Rpers only" meant. I joined, and they used the basic terms "OC" and such, but I didn't know what those meant. Thank the Valar they were nice about it, and explained it all tome thoroughly.
Gotta admit mine was little embarrassing, Remember when Hunger Games was really in? well I kinda went full on fanboy for that series and started writing really crappy fanfic's, That slowly bloomed to joining a rp forum for the hunger games on a an old site called fan-fiction (Though all the forums on the site now are basically dead, which is actually really sad cause Forums were a big part of my of my teen years.) Anyway after my hunger games obsession wore off I got into Role-playing for other things such as Final Fantasy, Buffy the vampire slayer, Dc Universe, ETC. And now I pretty much will RP anything now as it has sort of become a stress reliever for me.
I got into roleplaying thanks to MySpace (back when that site was all the rage.) I roleplayed a lot when the site still had chatrooms and when they were gone my interest died a little. But I got back into it thanks to a few friends.
My 4th grade girlfriend was into it. 'course I didn't know it was RP at the time and exclusively did so with her, so my official start was D&D when my cousin's group needed someone to fill the slot left by their paladin with mono. I multi-classed and optimized horribly. It became a meme in his friend group which some of them STILL employ, one of them having me saved on their phone as "The Tank Warlock" a full fourteen years later.
I found myself, when I could first write, drawn to this thing I often did. I hadn't known it was roleplaying at the time, but I enjoyed it even if it was... well... by myself. I often wrote stories and information about characters within a little notepad that I had. I filled so much of them up... I'm sure I still have some actually! Of course, since I was very young, all my replies to myself were, ahhh, in script form. It is honestly a little embarrassing, but I can chalk it up to the fact that I was quite little if not immature. I think, if I'm honest with myself, that I've been roleplaying ever since I could, well, write! It especially escalated in school! It helped me cope with stress although I never did my homework or listened to any of my teachers. I was too occupied in a world of my own creation with characters I learned to love through hardship and dedication. It was much happier than working on some silly paperwork.
Ah, I'm happy that I've improved since then however and still, to this day, love roleplaying and do it quite well if I do say so myself. It comes with years of practise though so I'm delighted in myself for taking the first step - even if unknown - into this world of imagination. This website called quotev was the biggest step of improvement for me though and I'm most grateful to it and the people there that helped me through my hardship and silly struggles. I often lack motivation, but since I've joined here that hasn't been the case! I seem to find myself rejuvenated and hopefully I'll come up with fresh ideas. I'm quite excited.

Oh boy. Does anybody here remember a website called Scratch? It's the online community for this program created by MIT that helps kids learn how to, well, program. A lot of us made really cringe-worthy animations and stories about Warriors cats and Eevees and anthros and sparkledogs, all Mary Sues to the extreme, but it was okay because we were all in the 9-16 age range. My first introduction to the existence of RP was through a group on Scratch called the Eevee Club. I had a shiny Eevee named Skye that I played as, before the group fell apart due to OOC drama (there was so much IC/OOC bleed because we were all angsty children who didn't know how to manage our emotions, it was awful).
Fast forward some years to the heyday of the Homestuck fandom, when I discovered a website called MSPARP, which was basically Omegle for Homestuck RPers. It designed for the chat format of RP but it was possible to do para as well. I started out playing as canon characters, then discovered a group for OC RP, which I joined with the first iteration of one of the main characters of my novel... It wasn't as bad as Scratch (*shudder*) but it was really poor quality writing compared to what I can do today.
A few months later I met the woman who is now my fiancée, also thanks to Homestuck. She has an entire fictional universe of her own creation, a mega-crossover thing with some original elements as well. We started RPing in that universe as the odd trio of Casper the Friendly Ghost, Danny Phantom, and the Phantom from Phantom of the Opera. We never stopped RPing after that. Next we branched out to exploring other aspects of her universe, then we started RPing with my Homestuck OCs and her main OC (a dimension traveler who created the aforementioned fictional universe but was subsequently banished from it), and then after a couple years of Homestuck we moved on to the Star Wars universe, then a brief interlude in The Elder Scrolls 'verse, then back to her fictional universe, then back to Star Wars. Her dimension traveler and my OCs have done a lot together, and we have no plans of stopping. It's amazing.
Some time after I met my fiancée, The Elder Scrolls Online was released, and being the huge TES fan I am I of course started RPing there. I've done a lot in that game as well, and seen quite a few guilds rise and fall. That's where Ghaurug got his RP start. Recently, I also discovered RPR through one of my ESO guilds after it made a group here, and that brings us up to the present day!
I almost forgot! I've been playing tabletop RPGs on and off since my Scratch days as well. Currently I'm in two games, one of which is sadly on hiatus, but I've had up to three active games running at a time. Crazy stuff, but I love it!

I remember watching my three older brothers play Dungeons and Dragons every friday night instead of going out because we lived in the middle of nowhere on the Rez and there wasn't an 'out' to go to. I used to play with them, but I didn't really know what I was doing and the dice thing confused the heck out of me as a six year old. When I was fourteen I started playing in a Star Wars chat room on AOL and got myself hooked.
Late on the bandwagon, but whatever.
I found out about RP on a site called Howrse. I was going through my 'horse craze' at that time (10-11ish, maybe 12) at the time, so I found that site and joined. For the longest time, I played how you were supposed to play: raise horses, enter competitions, etc. Simple enough. Could become a little mundane but still fun.
Then, I discovered that one of the stables I was boarding a horse in had something called a forum. I browsed around. There wasn't really anything there besides a guestbook, a few conversations for regulars, and an 'ad' link where others could advertise their own stables. I clicked on that in hopes of finding a cheaper stables, but instead found tons of posts for RPs. A couple links later, I found myself playing as a an Elf delegate from Middle Earth. (Come to think of it, I was twelve. I'd just finished my collection of Tolkien books the same time I joined Howrse...only way I remember ages is by the books I got! ) Later on, I ended up making a surprisingly successful group RP for a world of dragon riders I made. Then I had to quit for quite a few years.
Two years ago (I think), I joined an RP site called Valucre. It was incredibly enjoyable, but I started getting harassed by an older player and things got...bad, to say the least. I stopped for a while, then decided to start again. The Star Wars sites I joined didn't work out for me unfortunately (can't figure out Jcink or whatever it's called for the life of me!), and then I found this place!!!

Honestly, the very first type of RP I was involved in was playing with Barbie dolls with my sisters. I have 2 sisters and my parents just never saw the point in buying boy toys, since we had so many girl toys already. My sisters would always make my doll be the cleaning lady while theirs were rich valley girls. I got back at them by having my cleaning lady doll sleep with their dolls' husbands. We watched a lot of Desperate Housewives.
Then I laid off of it for a few years, before discovering RPGs. I was obsessed, constantly looking for new ones. Never really RP'd in those, though. Just creating a character and having them go on adventures was fun enough for me. Then I discovered a Harry Potter RP site, where your character would actually go to Hogwarts and ''learn spells'' (a ''lesson'' consisted of a forum thread with people just ''practicing'' spells by posting the incantation over and over). I was a huge potterhead at the time, so it was like a dream come true. A ''schoolyear'' on the site would be going on at the same time a RL schoolyear was going on, though, and the site required players visit and post regularly, which was difficult for me to do, since the ''professors'' gave actual homework, which you had to do if you wanted to stay on the site, and doing both my RL homework and HP-style homework was too much, which eventually got me kicked off the site (''expelled'' from Hogwarts, the e-mail said). The site is still going strong, though. All this happened roughly 4 years ago.
That somehow made me take the RP community too seriously and really turned me off of it, because I thought every forum had those same strict rules of having to post and participate regularly. I simply do not have the time nor inspiration to constantly be churning out new RP. I decided to give it another go just before registering on this site roughly a month ago, and just googled ''roleplaying site,'' which led me to here. I'm really glad I became a part of this community, as I've met so many great people, who are also all amazing writers and roleplayers.

Skipping the part as kid were we (a bunch of friends of the neighbrouhood and my little brother) used Playmobil, Lego and Master of the Univierse actionfigures to create our own universes and storylines but talking about when I starte writing RP - it was back on Myspace more than a decade ago.
A friend was RPing there with some other German-speaking weirdos.
Knowing me to be what these days surely would be called a major movie/book-nerd who wrote short fan-fiction drabbles she asked me if I could see myself joining a RPG she and her friends had created.
It was a fun time, a bunch of German and Austrian weirdos writing a totally crazy Vampire/Supernatural/Horror story.
Anyhow, I soon discovered that there are more people around, and especially the English-speaking community was vast. Considering a good opportunity to keep up with my English I started to seek out others for 1x1 RPs - starting with 1-2 liners... and over the years now ending up with Multi-Para/Novella Style.
So that´s basically it - I moved from Myspace to a few other RP-pages, hopefully improved my writing-style over the years... and now due to the recommendation of a friend ended up here...
