Hmm

Because in most dice systems for RP, a 1 is a botch, and results in the worst possible outcome for whatever action you were trying to attempt. And the highest number on the die is often considered a "critical hit" or a "massive success", where you get a better than expected outcome on the action that you were attempting. So it lights up to highlight these important moments.
