Forums » Introductions » Hey, I'm new!

Hi guys!
I was lurking on this site for a while now, and I finally decided to make an account. I'm completely new to RP, so I may ask noob questions. My favorite subject in school is English, mainly because we are writing short stories. I like to play video games, my favorite being Guild Wars 2 (as of now).

I was hesitant on making an introductory post because I don't like to be the center of attention, but oh well.

I've seen that there is a paid membership on this website, so what are the benefits of members, and what are the restrictions of non-members? Thanks for your help!

Hello and welcome to the family! It is always nice to see new faces(Or usernames)! You asked what are the benefits of Members, well, as far as I know, members get more character slots, they get to decorate their profile and make templates for characters. I could be missing some things, but that is what I know, and I feel ya bro-ette, being the center of attention does stink! XD

Hey! I'm new as well and it's OK to be a noob. I've been role-playing and around role-players for my entire life so if you would like I can roleplay with you and help you out along the journey!
Hi! Welcome to RPR and to RP in general. I've been here two years and this place it's seriously my home. I hope you like it. As for Epic Membership, the biggest thing is that with free basic membership you ten 10 character slots, with Epic Membership you get 10 more, so 20 all together if you're an epic member - though you can also pay for permanent character slots. Basically if you are an epic member and have 20 characters ,if you don't renew your membership, all twenty characters will still be there but you can only edit 10 of them until you renew your membership.

You can also use epic template for your character profiles.

You can also change the color of your profile in several ways: text, link color, activity color, main color. And you can get an icon border.

Thank you guys for replying and for the information! I made a character and am looking forward to RPing her!

Of course! Role-playing should be welcomed to anyone, even if they don't fully understand it yet. It's an easy escape when you need it and it's also fun! That's the whole point of it and if that's what you need help with to get to that point I sure as hell am happy to help!

Well yeah. This is a place where we make friends and come together for our love of role-playing and making characters. There are a few bad apples on the site like all other but that's normal. Ignore them and most everyone on here is excepting and happy for you to join!

Welcome to RPR! I just joined as well. I saw you like playing GW2, I use to play that game so much a few months back. What is your favorite thing about the game?

Welcome to the site, I hope you enjoy it here!

Since you're new to role-playing, here's a quick couple of tips for you while getting started;
  • Generally speaking, you write RP as you would write a book, but only control the actions of one character; yours. Essentially, this means that when you're RPing, you play YOUR character and nobody elses. It seems pretty common sense, but some people break that rule by accident (or on purpose... LOOKING AT YOU DIAN) from time to time. Try to watch out for that to the best of your ability. An RP post generally looks like this;
    • Actions, set-up, etc. "CONVERSATION BETWEEN QUOTATION MARKS" More actions, descriptions, etc. 'Thoughts go here, sometimes in italics' actions, set-up, internal monologue, yadda yadda.
    Hope that helps!
  • Almost everyone RPs in third person, but there ARE exceptions and RPing in first person, while unusual, is not necessarily wrong... BUT IT CAN BE. Generally, when you role-play, a lot of it will be narration (saying what your character is doing, what they're observing, how they feel, etc. It's usually better to use third person in this and most people will do it, though some people choose to use first person. Here are a couple of QUICK, SIMPLE examples;
    • FIRST PERSON: I pick up the glass of water and say; "Oh good, something to drink!" before downing it in one gulp and giving a small nod in thanks to the young woman who offered it. "Thanks Maddie, you're the best."
    • THIRD PERSON: Michael picks up the glass of water and says; "Oh good, something to drink!" before downing it in one gulp and giving a small nod in thanks to the young woman who offered it. "Thanks Maddie, you're the best."
    Now, the change is small, but there's a couple of reasons why third person is better than first person in most people's hearts;
    • First person comes off as self-centered; Basically, when everyone else says their character's name, but you go "I" when describing things, it comes off as though you are the perspective character (the one from whom's perspective the story is told) which implies you're the "main" character. This tends to rub people the wrong way as in RP, everyone shares an equal ground of importance (except moderators and administrators, but that's of course.)
    • First person can get a bit confusing; Sometimes, people forget things. Having third person means each of your posts likely has at least ONE mention of your character's name. This makes things SO MUCH EASIER when someone wants to interact with your character. Of course, on RPR, it's not AS important since you can post as your character (I did it here just to give you an idea) but it still makes things a bit simpler.
    • Third person helps you distance yourself; Now, this is not a problem MOST people have, but sometimes when a character insults their character, or their character loses a fight, etc. RPers can get cross. Third person is a helpful little reminder that YOU are not being insulted, it's your CHARACTER, YOU did not lose, but the CHARACTER.
  • Nobody is perfect at role-playing; As with all forms of art, and writing IS an art, there are different ways to RP. No one post is perfect for ANY situation, no one person ALWAYS has the exact best way to reply to a given scenario in-character. You will make mistakes, others will make mistakes. That is perfectly fine. If something really bugs you, like a spelling mistake―for example―however; remember to be civil. For example, say Out Of Character (usually out of character conversation can be seen in double parentheses "(())" to show you're saying those words as yourself, not your character.) something along the lines of;
    • EXAMPLE: ((Hey, I couldn't help but notice you spelled "through" as "true" in the fourth line of your post... maybe your spell-check kicked in, or some such, but I was wondering if you could make a quick edit?)) OR ((Hey, I'm sorry, I must be tired, but I'm not sure what you meant in the sentence "he'd take her by the arm and make her do a pirouette." Could you elaborate?))

These are simple but crucial elements I hope will help you in your RPing journey.

With that, good luck, and may your wings and words spread across the sky!
Welcome to the site. Glad you made an account and decided to join in. I hope you find lots of stories.

I love the world exploration and how the lore ties into the gameplay. I was going to start roleplaying on there, but the rp community is pretty much dying.
