You suppose, perhaps, that could have been because of your status. No one ever wants to be your friend because of your charming personality, no. Why would they? They're always dazzled by your parents' power, their wealth, their grand estate. They think they can come to your side, woo you with frivolous compliments of your beauty and other petty things, and take something of your parents' for themself. Until, that is, your parents provide you with a bodyguard. Tensions are rising between the kingdoms, after all, and it's only wise. They purchase the allegiance of a hellbred mercenary named Quill. His past promises that his work will be beyond sufficient. This bodyguard is... surprisingly easy to talk to. You never quite thought you would actually come to think of this person as your friend, perhaps more in the dark nights, the small moments shared under the stars, the furtive glances the two of you share when you are having boring meetings with your parents and hoping desperately for any sort of relief - the glances that may mean more than they seem. Odd, you suppose, that one of your first true friends has come from a hired blade, but you still could not ask for a better companion in the dreadfully boring halls.

That is all well and good, perhaps, before there comes an assassin to try at your life. Your guard fends off the fiend, but he is not unscathed - unlike you. Your parents, then, decide it to be in your best interest to flee. Not forever, just until all of this blows over. You set off, alone, disguised, with only your guard as your company. Your parents found it unwise to even tell you where you are going, but you both have horses and many more supplies than are probably necessary to make a simple trip. You do not like entertaining the thought, but perhaps you will never be returning home. You ask your companion, almost constantly it feels, but he will say nothing.

You cannot choose what you do; your days are planned out by your advisors and nothing you ever do is truly of your own volition. Your wedding, even, has been planned. You are to marry as part of a political agreement between your kingdom and another to ensure peaceful negotiations in the years to come. Your spouse-to-be is charming enough, kind, but they do not want to marry you and you do not really wish to marry them either. You are both unfortunate pawns in the grand scheme of things. You commit yourselves to an existence of friends merely and make no move to further the relationship outside of the public eye. You expect that to be the end of things, but then one day you catch sight of someone else, someone that you should never even spare a second glance, and your heart stutters in your chest. Seeking mere companionship with this person would send your parents into a fit, but your heart yearns for courtship. A hellbred, one born of demonic heritage and likely with a past so marked with sins that his soul - if he had one at all - was blackened beyond repair. You caught sight of the man, of his gray skin, sharp teeth, prehensile tail, and demonic horns whilst he was speaking with your fiance, finalizing the tricky matters related to a job you needed completed for the sanctity of the kingdom. He - Quill, his name was - promised nothing short of absolute perfection and silence with this job - assassination, subterfuge of another sort, you didn't care to know. All you knew was that the way he spoke a greeting when passing by you on his quest sent a thrill up your spine.
