"As far as I know he's human. Unless he's changed just recently."

Matilda gripped her dagger and walked toward to mouth of the cave. She took a deep breath and entered. Upon entering she how dark it was. But this was perfect. It would be easier to sneak in the dark
Matilda made her way through the winding tunnels until she came to the end. Her sword and her uncle were there, but the sword pinned the poor man to the floor of the cave through his chest. Matilda gasped and fell the her knees.

"Wh-what? Why? I can't believe it..."

She just sat there wondering what happened.

Corvina followed Matilda in and stood there in shock when she saw the body. Her focus was disrupted and she immediately became visible again. "How...?" Did this mean that Matilda's uncle wasn't the killer? And if he wasn't then who was, and what was his part in the murder?

Corvina went to Matilda and comforted her. "I'm so sorry." She wasn't sure what else to do to help her friend.

"He was a fool. He shouldn't have followed me here. Neither should the two of you. If you value your lives I suggest the two of you leave."

An unknown whispered. It would feel as if it was right there next to the girls, though there was mo sign of anyone. This really bothered Matilda. She grabbed Corvina by the hand and tugged at her to run.

Corvina ran out with Matilda, no extra encouraging needed. By the time they stopped Corvina was panting for breath and couldn't speak. After a while she said, "What...was that...?"

After looking back to make sure they weren't followed Matilda caught her breath and sighed.

"I have no idea. But it scared the hell out of me. I've never been more terrified about anything... But I don't see anything following us."

Corvina shuddered. "Yeah, but we didn't see it before either... Times like this I wish I had a more offensive power." She kept looking over her shoulder expecting to see something.

One of the town guards approached unnoticed by Matilda. He placed his hand on her shoulder and she almost jumped clean out of her working pants.

"AHHHHHH!!! L-LET GO!!!"

She screamed and turned toward the guard. As she realized it was him she calmed down and sighed.

"Seriously? Don't ever do that. When you see a terrified girl don't lay your hands on her. It could get you seriously injured...... Physically or pride..."

The guard raised an eyebrow and burst into laughter. He was one of the more cooperative guards and liked to joke with people.

"Are you ladies alright? I saw you running from over there and decided I would see if I could help. What seems to be the problem?"

With his laughter Matilda was pretty mad by now. She crossed her arms and stayed quiet.

Corvina practically jumped out of her skin when Matilda screamed. She whipped around to see the guard and breathed a sigh of relief.

She got mad when he started laughing though.

"It would be nice if you didn't laugh at us for one." Corvina wasn't sure how much they should tell him. They'd probably be put in a nut house if they tried telling the truth.

The guard smirked and apologized.

"I'm sorry, ladies. Now calm down and explain what's going on."

Matilda looked toward Corvina and shrugged. She looked back at the guard and stood firm as she spoke.

"Well, me and my friend here were just out walking and we were approached by these suspecious men so we ran. I believe they're bandits."

Clearly she was lying, but the guard didn't seem to know any better.

"Looked like they were armed too. Maybe they were on to a raid on town or one of the farms around here?" If the guards thought these 'bandits' were armed, then maybe they'd take more caution when searching and they'd be safer from the thing in the cave.

Corvina shuddered again. No one should have to meet that.

"And were these "bandits" armed with pick axes, hoes, or rakes? There are miners and farmers out there too. But I'll report this and investigate just to be safe."

He headed back to town but had his hand on his sword just in case. Matilda turned to Corvina and giggled.

"That takes care of that. Now no-one needs to think we're loopy."

Corvina laughed with her. "I can just see them wandering around the countryside, looking for bandits."

She thought back to the thing in the cave though, and her mood became more somber and serious. "What now? I don't suppose you feel like going back there and getting your sword." And burying your uncle. She thought to herself.

"For the time being it can stay there... I'm not putting our lives in danger over a sharp hunk of steel."

Matilda also thought about her uncle and what to do about his body. Leave it to rot or risk her life to retrieve him. Either way she would have to explain his death to the towns people.

Corvina sighed. "I just hope no one else stumbles into there on accident." She looked up and was surprised to see the sun was hovering just above the horizon.

"When did it get so late? It feels like hardly any time has gone by. I suppose everyone in town is going to wonder where you uncle suddenly disappeared to though. Do you have an idea of what to tell them?"

She thought for a moment then came up with a perfect story.

"Hunting. He went hunting. Everyone knows he hunts. But he doesn't go so randomly though. But I'm most positive that it'll work."

She nodded. "Sounds good. I'm probably going to go home now though, I don't like the thought of being outside when night falls."

Matilda walked Corvina home and left for her own home. Meanwhile the mysterious assassin was planning its next murder. It slipped from the cave and had Matilda's dagger in hand. It had been cleaned of her uncle's blood and shined as it was before. It slipped unnoticed into the city over the wall and kept to the building tops silent as could be and light as a feather. It snuck into Matilda's house as she slept and placed the dagger on her mantle. It would be near impossible for her to miss it when she woke up. The assassin stared at her for a moment before leaving. Almost as if she seemed important to him. Upon snapping out of his daze he exited and headed to Corvina's house. His next target was near. Her neighbor. Fortunately for the neighbor there was a death in the family and the man wasn't home. Instead he had traveled to the next town over for the funeral. With little to no patience, the assassin moved on to looking for its next victim. None in this town. Back to the cave it went. When Matilda awoke the next morning the look on her face was of pure fear as she noticed the dagger on the mantle right next to her bed. She nervously grabbed it and rushed outside. She felt unsafe and on edge. Still in her pyjamas, she dropped to the ground and shook nervously. That thing had been in her room while she was sleeping. This was the most unnerved she had ever been.

Corvina stretched and looked outside, unaware of last night's events. She wondered if the being from the cave had struck again, but pushed such gloomy thoughts out of her head. This morning was too beautiful to mar with such thoughts. She got up and changed into a homespun dress barren of any designs. She was going to the farmer's market today and didn't need to look fancy. She went outside and locked her door behind her.

Corvina was surprised to see Matilda kneeling on the ground, clutching a dagger. She gently pulled her to her feet and saw the fear in her eyes. "Are you ok? What happened?"

As Matilda stood to her feet the dagger slipped from her hand and fell to the ground. Breathing fast and hard, almost hyper ventilating, she slowly looked up at Corvina. Her voice was but a whisper as it escaped her vocal cords.

"Th-that thing was in m-my room... Look. Its been wiped clean and polished as if it were never used... It could have easily k-killed me. But I'm alive..."

She pointed down to the dagger that had yesterday been uaed to kill her uncle.

"I'm going to be blamed for this. I just know it..."

Corvina paled when Matilda told her the thing had been in her house. She had entertained a vain hope that it would leave them alone, even though it was unlikely.

"Just breath, I won't let you be wrongly accused of anything." She thought for a few moments. "Why don't you leave the dagger with me? If you don't have it they won't have any evidence on you. I'll wait until I can slip away and take care of it."
