Deirdre chuckled. He probably did that on purpose. The boy flinched as he stared at the explosion. The woman looked upon the boy and turned away. The drive continued on as Deirdre flicked on the radio. The ride back to HQ so far was felt like it was taking forever. Deirdre sat in silence, rather cheered up by the explosion, however she still had whatever was on her mind, irritating her. As they neared the edge of the city, Deirdre's fingers began to tap on her leg as she looked down for a moment. She leaned back and slumped slightly in her chair, leaning her head back as she stared at the monitors. A couple moments of silence as she looked over the screen as the car neared HQ. "Turn us around." Deirdre said hoarsely as the computer comprehended for a moment. "Are you sure?" the computer chimed. "YES. DO IT NOW." she sounded aggressive now. "Destination required..." "Preset 8." "Destination Acquired: District 98, Garage 4." The car then pulled into a parking lot and turned around, speeding towards the slums. Rapture logged into the com. "Rutt. Why are you turning around?" he asked. "Going to my garage." "What?! Why?" "Change of plans."
Alain frowned. "why?" he just asked. He was curious at her motives, and really didn't know why she would do what she did. Dave too, looked surprised, but since he didn't know where they were going before that, he didn't really care either.
"Rapture disable your connection to HQ for now and drive over to my garage." she ordered and Rapture sighed. "Deirdre..." "Please." she bit her tongue and Rapture logged out, meaning he would be there. As Alain asked her she turned to him with a bothered look. "I'll explain when we arrive." It didn't take long for them to arrive at her garage either. As the car pulled in, Deirdre activated the garage door from her wrist computer and the shutters rose. The car drove in as Deirdre soon saw that Rapture was sitting on the car she already had parked inside, his bike leaning off to the side. He jumped off the hood of the broken car as their car parked itself. She turned and looked at the boy in the back. "16. Wait in the car, please." she said softly. The boy obeyed and brought his knees to his chest. Deirdre quickly opened the door and limped out, Rapture immediately holding her up and helping her over to the work shop table. Deirdre waved Alain over as Rapture pushed all clutter off and allowed her to sit on the table. "Deirdre, what are you doing..." he stared at her questioningly as Deirdre waited for Alain to come over.
Alain got out as well. He'd already deactivated his helmet, and for the first time since he started his mission he felt the clear air on his head again. He enjoyed that feeling, a temporary safety from the dangers of a mission. He quickly joined Deirdre, leaving Dave in the car. "So what's all this about?"
Deirdre looked at Alain a moment as Rapture gave her a pain killer. The woman looked to the floor momentarily, biting her lip. "XVI..." she said as Rapture looked at her curiously. "...It's a kid, Rapture." she looked up at Rapture who seemed suddenly shock. "What?" She gripped the edge of the workbench. "Yes. It's a kid, Rapture and I'm not taking him back." Rapture stood straight in protest for a moment. "What? Deirdre, do you know what they'll do to you if you--" "I'm not letting them take him." Deirdre suddenly snarled. "I won't allow it." Rapture looked her dead in the eye. "Because you know what those researchers will do to him, if I return him?" she paused to let Rapture think about it, looking at Alain hoping for support on this. "They'll do the exact same thing with him, just like the did at the facility that was just destroyed." her voice was quieter now, but filled with emotion. Yes her job was on the line, but this was out of line. Rapture couldn't help but stare at her. "But... The details didn't say it was a kid!" he suddenly growled, his head dropping a bit.
Alain shook his head in reply. "They never do. People always leave out those details. I've got into more than one messy situation before." he shrugged. "I'm just lucky I work alone." he then returned to the matter at hand. I don't know what your organisation is like, but I can't let that boy go back to whoever issued the mission. I'm not one for messing up a mission, but this wasn't part of the deal and I won't go with it."
Rapture in turn, started to explain about the organization they worked for. "Our organization; Naysem Co, is... like one of those agencies that gives jobs out to people. They give out quite a variety of jobs. We however are based in the Mercenary category. Though that doesn't mean we just get mercenary work. We from time to time get infiltrations, escorts, courier work...Sometimes off world missions too. They are assigned to us according to our skills etc." Deirdre intervened. "The company has it's rules and regulations. They check into every detail, even the ones that aren't given but sometimes... They slip up." she looked to the floor, coughing. Rapture leaned forward, over Deirdre and examined where she'd been stabbed with the needle. Carefully, he began to start removing the patch that covered it.
Alain nodded. "Well that looks all really good and stuff... But those rules will get you killed in this case, if you don't watch out." Alain sighed. "This is exactly while I work alone."
Deirdre fell silent and looked to Rapture who had realized this. "We know. The company is still trying to sort this out. Personally though, I'd rather work with them then freelance." he seemed uneasy as he saw Deirdre had been giving Rapture a look as he peeled off the rest of the bandage to reveal the spot on her neck that had been stabbed with the needle. It was swollen and had started turning her skin to a dark black around it. Rapture stared at it. "... I know what he did. I'll get to work on it and you should be fine after some rest." Deirdre nodded as she pulled her hair up into a bun. She turned slightly and looked at the car. The boy had his nose pressed against the window of the car and was now staring at the trio that stood in the work area just before the stairs that lead to the housing part of her garage. Deirdre seemed to be deep in thought, trying to figure out how she could help the boy. "...Could you maybe talk to your friend?" she asked Rapture who glanced at her while searching for a couple things in the cabinet. "...Maybe. We'll discuss this once you are finished."
"What friend?" Alain inquired. He looked back at the car and saw Dave and the boy they found sitting in there. Dave had fallen sound asleep due to all the excitement, but the kid was definately feeling cornered, and tensed up completely. He shook his head in disbelief of the whole situation, then turned back to Deirdre and Rapture.
Rapture turned his attention to Alain as he took out a bottle, cloth and needle along with the necessary items to patch up the spot on her neck. "Hm. Friend who can probably help sort this mess out. I will not reveal his name." he rinsed out the cloth after dabbing her neck with some of the strange liquid in the bottle. Rapture took out a small black box and gently put it against her neck before wrapping her neck with a bandage so the box would stay there as it did it's magic. Deirdre sighed and slowly brought herself off the workbench. She was still bruised and battered but it wasn't as bad as before. Rapture turned. "I'll go see if I can call him." the man turned from Alain and Deirdre, taking out his holo-phone and exiting, via the stairs into Deirdre's apartment. The redhead gazed at Alain. "Sorry..." she apologized with a sigh as she took off her leather jacket, throwing it onto the counter before adjusting her brown t-shirt.
Alain tapped her shoulder. "Don't worry too much about it. Neither of us had expected anything quite like this." he replied, looking back at the car once more. "We need to figure out what to do with those muppets over there though." he told her.
Deirdre too looked over at the car and nodded slowly. "... Dave we can take home. But I think it'd be worth it to establish whether or not he's going to talk about this situation to someone. What we do isn't exactly public stuff." she sighed as she heard Rapture's faint voice from the upstairs. He seemed to be on the phone. Deirdre then looked to the boy they had rescued. "The boy however... If we get clearance, I can take care of him for a period of time until he's ready to fend for himself. Well if Rapture's friend allows it however." she doubted it would be too much of a problem however. The researchers who had started this whole thing were going to get arrested anyways and Naysem Co. would've taken him anyways.
"Who is this friend, anyway?" Alain inquired. He had realized that whoever it was, was only referred to as "friend" and never by name.
Deirdre glanced at her upstairs apartment, making sure Rapture wasn't coming downstairs. Rapture happened to be at the back of her apartment where her terminals were. Her voice dropped to a low whisper. "Don't tell him I told you, neither that you know, please. It could present problems if you do know, since you don't work for Naysem." she paused a moment to make sure he understood. Before checking again. Rapture spoke on the phone, seeming to argue. Deirdre then came over to Alain and whispered close to his ear. "His 'friend' is his older brother. He runs higher up operations and deals with problems like this one. He doesn't want people to know because people can take advantage of that." she backed away, pressing a finger gently to her lips, signifying to not tell.
Alain nodded understandingly. "Alright then. Let's hope that this "friend" knows what to do."
She nodded as the room grew quiet once again. She stared at the car. "Let's get Dave up, while Rapture deals with this for a bit. I want to get Dave home. He's been through enough already. I however have to talk to him before he is taken home." Standing up straight, she moved at her own pace to the car and knocked on Dave's window.
Dave shot upright again as Deirdre knocked on the window. He realized he'd been asleep. Was it a dream? Then he looked to his left and saw Deirdre standing there. I guess not... He then opened the car door and got out, looking at Deirdre expextantly.
As Dave got out of the car she put her hands to her hips. She could see that he was tired. "Dave? We're going to have the car take you home. But first I have to speak to you." she would wait for him to acknowledge this then continue. "See, what we do isn't public, Dave. I need to know that you won't speak of anything that had happened here to anybody. I'm saying this for your own sake, because if you do bad things could happen but not by my hand. You'll have worse people after you." she sighed. "I'm asking you this, because I don't want to have you strapped into some system and have your memory wiped. It is painful and I couldn't do that to a kid like you."
Dave quickly nodded, he was suddenly awake. Not having expected that he would be released like this made him happy, and a smile cracked on his face. "Thank you." he said. He didn't know what else to say, so he just repeated. "Thank you."
