Mary Jane laughed, shaking her head.
"Oh, come on, Em. Mr. Daniels isn't all that bad," she said as she stabbed another strawberry with her fork and grinned at Emily's dramatic retelling of a project the history teacher had assigned.
Suddenly, she spotted Elena and Peter across the room and smiled, waving to them, before she noticed they seemed to be in the middle of some fight or other.
She hesitated for just a few seconds before standing from the table. "I'll be right back," she said to her friends with a smile before heading over to join Elena and Peter.
"Hey, guys! What's up?," she asked cheerfully, hoping to break whatever tension there was.
