Under Construction
So, after much encouragement from friends, I'm setting up a BBCode help desk!
Basically, if you need help in any way, post your issue here and I can look at, attempt to fix, or offer suggestions on an alternate code to provide similar results.
I will also edit this post common fixes to issues.
Common Things I'm Asked About
Disclaimer: Profiles of mine I use as examples are marked with mature warnings.
That's So Basic
Things that are second nature to me, but might not be to you, and you really want to understand how to build a profile that gets looked at instead of just clicked on.
"The Great Wall of Text"
Let's say you're pretty verbose. Nothing wrong with that, that's the first wonderful trait a RP member should have imo, but your profile is. Intense. It's intimidating. What is, to you, gushing about your character, can come off as a 10 foot high concrete wall of "I cannot compare". How do you fix that? Spacing. Visual triggers and some collapses to make people actively seek out this well of information you might have.
My example, Zoie, has a lot of IC information to read, but with colors, gifs, switching up of text size and left to right, it gives the eye movement and makes a person more likely to read it all as well as remember what's there, and know where to look if something specific is updated or mentioned in RP to see more regarding it on the page.
Size or Color There's a lot of info, but you want to piece meal it. How do you make these meals? Emphasis. Change a font's size, color. It doesn't have to be always bold. It can be in all caps. Maybe the template you're using offers a strike text that's a ready-made title font for sections. | BlockingThis isn't the social form of blocking. This is the design version, where you take that wall and cut it down into bite sizes. Decide what works together, what's most important, what needs to be there and what's second hand but you'd like it to be available for a player to refer to. Most people don't consume a whole RP profile at first visit, so make things easy to find and the things you want to be seen at the tops of the pages. | NavigationIf you haven't looked at any of my profiles by now, that's alright, but for a lot of them, my first page is more of a welcome mat than any IC info. It's got a navigation of where to find things, sometimes a guestbook, and kudos. Perhaps what I'm seeking easily accessible for those looking to fill a role. Playstyle chart, so players can see if we're compatible without wasting further time. Don't hide your information you've spent time putting to type, if you can. |
So You Think You Can Column
Columns are my go-to for basically every profile I make. I use them to the point it can look a bit terrifying on the source code level. I put them within each other, manipulate their sizes, twist them until they pop out results.
Youtube Videos Within Columns "Konnie, I did the youtube code right in this column but my video isn't showing up! Help!" With columns, they get a bit weird about being "equal" with their other columns. Youtube videos somehow, in this mess, lose their status, and without help, will be shoved off to never be seen. There's two easy fixes to it. My favorite, and one I use for columns pretty much always, is transparent buffer text. [ color = transparent]xxxxxxxxxxxxx[/ color] will give you space to work, and you can adjust widths of columns using it. This also works for making sure your videos get seen. Another fix is putting an image in the same column. You can use a transparent one of the exact width you want the video to be, a gif or reference image, anything you like, really. Youtube videos just can't be alone, silly things. |
Columns Within Columns within columns... "Is this all just one big column?" "Yes, yes it is." As mentioned already, there's a demand in columns for them to be of equal size. This also makes it easier to make things more organized and visually appear similar, with less headache. An example of columns within columns can be seen here, and I'll explain further how it works. I put everything into columns on that page. You think I'm kidding? Wrong. So, as you can see, I was able to use [ nextcol] to stagger columns. This allows for eye movement with little headache on my part. It also allows for things to look similar even when split apart. Because they're sharing the same space, they're sharing the same column equality dynamic, and it'll keep your text from becoming a weird fountain of run off that img align code does. |
This Post Spot Is Reserved
That code in "Columns within columns" is scary man... anyway, I think this'll be really helpful for me in the future, so thank youu!~
Hey...
So I've seen people do these cool fonts and I was wondering how one might go about doing that?

Template Jam has had this question as well, and I'll link to their thread because the answers there are pretty helpful!
The code is [ font=font family] text [/font ], without the spaces, if you know which font you'd like to use.
