I just have to announce, once again, somewhere, for all the world to see, how much I love The Sound of Music!
We're watching it again, because it's a good family movie for Christmas that my mom and I both like, and even the parts that I used to think we're boring...
The scene with Maria and the Captain singing outside in the moonlight after the Baroness leaves...
The wedding scene in the abby, which has no dialogue, just music and those beautiful gowns...
I used to think those parts were boring...but today they struck me as slightly beautiful. As you get older you appreciate different things and writing romance scenes has made me notice and analyze romance scenes in movies more. And these scenes are so classy and classic.
And the lines are so clever.
Like when the Nazi guy comes up to Max and says "Why should the festival not go on? Nothing in Austria has changed..." ....and then does the Nazi salute and says "Heil Hitler!" (Which is perfectly staged irony because, of course, just that one sentence shows how everything in Austria has changed). It's just so brilliantly written.
And the edelweiss part. At the festival. Where the Captain starts singing the song about edelweiss, the white flower that's the national symbol of the country that's just been taken over. And he chokes up and can't finish it, and his wife comes out there and holds his hand and helps him finish singing it. And then the voices of the crowd in the audience rise up and they start singing with them, singing a hymn of love for their occupied country together. Gah!
I've seen it so many times. I thought I would be immune to it by now. I was like, "yeah, yeah, ok, it's probably not going to make me tear up this time," but nope! Still does. Every. Time.
And the nuns stealing the car parts so they can get away.
And then the cinematography of the mountains of Austria as they walk over the mountains to escape into Switzerland.
Such a beautifully told story.
I love this movie.
Aaaaand just for fun...
Here's a pic of the real Maria and Georg Von Trapp, depicted in the movie.

OMG, that movie is such a classic! Yeah it's not as action-packed or anything like our modern movies, but it is indeed a beautiful story, and like you say, full of such cleverly delivered lines. Not to mention the music is so awesome and nicely woven into the story itself!
What is your favorite song in it, by the way? Mine is the one where they learn the notes to sing

Yeah the "do, a deer, a female deer..." I like that one, especially when the kids start "mixing it up" towards the end :p
Probably my favorite one is the one that Liesel sings with Rolphe...(sp?) on the gazebo.
The one that goes,
"I am sixteen going on seventeen, innocent as a rose...
Bachelor dandies, drinkers of brandies, what do I know of those?"
I like how it's all ironic because she's totally the one chasing him. It's cute.
Second favorite song would probably be Edelweiss. Third favorite would have to be the Goatherd Song, which I can't help but love, even though it sounds totally ridiculous, and, in fact, the fact that it sounds totally ridiculous is definitely the reason why I love it so much. Plus.....yodeling. Fourth favorite would have to be that one that goes "I have confidence in sunshine..."
The songs "Something in my youth or childhood," where she talks about having a wicked childhood, never really made sense to me. Because...like...she's trying to be a nun. She obviously didn't have a wicked childhood. It just doesn't fit the character, I don't think. I never really connected with that song. I never really connected with the song "Climb Every Mountain," either, I don't know why. It has a good message, I just never really connected with it. If I say is sounds cheesy...well... that would be hypocritical of me since I like every other cheesy song in this thing, which is every song. I love them all. But "Climb Every Mountain" seemed a little too abstract for me, I guess. Or maybe I don't like the singer's voice, I don't know. I know some people LOVE that song, and, like...I get it; it's a sweet song, but it never did anything for me.
Thanks for giving me an excuse to ramble, Subtleknifewielder. What other musicals do you like?

Is it wrong that I first thought of the Beatles cartoon trip movie 'Yellow Submarine' when I saw the title of this thread?

Probably.
Nah...
Not wrong... because I don't what you're talking about, unfortunately!

Well, let's see, I enjoy most animated musicals by Disney and other ones targeted at children, but some highlights for me were Robin Hood, The Aristocats, and The Sword in the Stone. I still laugh helplessly every time the dogs and the butler butt heads in Aristocats And Archimedes tries so hard but gets so flustered in Sword in the Stone.
Oh yeah, there's also Wizard of Oz, and Annie, and All Dog Go to Heaven. I've lost count of how many times I watched that last one when I was a kid, and I read as many of the books of Oz as I could get my hands on, after seeing that movie.
