I'm working on the first draft of East of The Sun while the other book rests until January something or other; I figured I'd share a few snippets from said first draft. They're pretty rough but I am excited about them all. I will put them under a cut so the page isn't so long.

Here's the words and things.

“That’s just what it us, huh?” Kaine asked her, “You can’t defy my wishes and just expect me to live with it. I am in charge of you, not the other way around.”
Nafiya scoffed. “I’m here on my own free will. I can leave anytime I want; and have you forgotten you wouldn’t even be where you are if weren’t for me.” She told him. She had no doubts that if she hadn’t pulled Kaine off his ass in The Sorrows four years before the rebel group wouldn’t have even been formed.
“You really think you’re worth that much?” Kaine spat at out her.
Nafiya swallowed hard. “Yes, and there was a point when you did too.” she told him, “At least I thought you did.”
Her heart squeezed hard within her chest. If there was anything she hadn’t missed the month that she had been gone, it was looking directly into Kaine’s face, and knowing he would turn against her in a single second.
Perhaps if it weren’t for that, she wouldn’t have went to get Sebastienne behind his back.
Kaine’s eyes glittered for just a moment. His adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. Once again, as he always did, he avoided responding to her direct words.
“You’re reckless, Nafiya. That’s why I am in charge and not you,” he reminded her

Nafiya had never been effected by someone crying more than she had Sebastienne.
Suddenly Sebastienne’s arms were around her, and Nafiya’s arms slid around her soft waist in the blink of an eye. As she felt Bastien squeeze her, she squeezed back tightly, their bodies turning to face each other more, and they hugged like it was the last hug anyone was ever going to get.
“I don’t know why you care about me, not when you did all that you did,” Bastien whispered, her breath against her neck.
Nafiya’s lips parted as she was about to respond but Sebastienne continued.
“…but more than that, I don’t know why I care about you after all of it.”

“Why? It would be easier to just, focus on the ground, not jump off a (expletive) three story building!” Nafiya reminded her.
Sebastienne’s eyes filled with tears.
“I need to try,” she told her.
“Please, just, come down from the roof with me,” Nafiya said softly, her eyes filled with concern.
“Please, let me do this,” Bastien begged her. She knew it was insane, but she didn’t know what else to do.
“I…Bastien I can’t save you, “ Nafiya told her. Voice breaking. Longing in her eyes.
Sebstienne’s brow furrowed. “What?” she asked.
“If you jump, you either fly, or you die,” Nafiya told her, “I can’t save you. I don’t…I don’t have wings Bastien, I can’t just fly and catch you..”

“We have a similarity in that, you know,” Kaine said as he turned around to look at her. Several of his fingers grazed along the bindings of the books before he moved his hand in front of his body.
“Do we?” Sebastienne asked, stepping closer to him.
The look in his eyes had darkened and it was both startling and magnetic.
The man chuckled.
“I wasn’t born in Raavier, I came here only four years ago.” Kaine explained.
Sebastienne kept her face neutral, or at least tried to. Not wanting to look as though she was too interested in what she was saying - even though the truth was that she was looking into his words as much as she possibly could.
She held her hands behind her back, one of her hands holding onto her wrists. She stepped closer.
“Nafiya told me she….found you, saved you?” Sebastienne inquired.
Kaine nodded slowly, and his eyes darted away from her. She could see the embers of the fire reflected in them.
“To say she saved me might be an understatement,” Kaine replied lowly.
“What would you say she did?” Bastien asked. Her head tilted to the side.
Kaine turned towards her, he looked down at her, and she fought the urge to both step closer and further away from him.
It was easy to see why Nafiya had such a difficult time parting from him - Sebastienne couldn’t imagine what it would be like if she had actually been in a romantic and sexual relationship with Kaine as Nafiya had.
