Delliema: You are walking in the woods when you come across an old dying tree, it sparkles at the light reflects off of it. It seems to be an apple tree, but it is far too frail and old to provide apples anymore. Or is it? A single apple hangs low from a branch as the weak branch cannot support the weight of even something as light as this apple. Walking up to this apple something calls out to you. Take a bite from this apple, and you will live forever. Looking around you see no one who could have said that, you return your attention to the apple

-Do you eat it and become immortal
OR
-Leave it be and walk away, staying mortal

At first, I thought maybe this would go in the game section, but its more than just simple would you rather, I really wanna see some reasoning as to why you chose your answer
Immortality, especially when you're the only immortal, kind of sucks.

If you live forever, you'll live long enough to see all of your mortal friends and family die. You will watch the world end. Your entire species might go extinct and if you meet any new peoples, you'll be some sort of abomination to them. (You might be a god to 'em if you get lucky.) If the universe ends, you'll be there for it.

In short, immortality can go wrong much too easily; I'd rather die and hope that either the afterlife is great, or that there's nothing there for me to worry about.
Immortality. Yes, you lose so much, but... well, to me, I want to see change and growth. yes, your friend's might be temporary, which is very very sad, but you can also help them live on beyond death. Remember them, tell stories about them. Things might change around you, but that means always new things to experience and discover. Yes, there's pain, but there's also so so so much beauty, and even more opportunity to help create it! Being able to be a guiding light for the future, someone who has seen so much, remembers so many, and has so much skill, practise and experience is wonderful, even with, and maybe because of, the pain that comes with it.

Also, being able to make long, cunning plans way in advanced seems real tempting....

I think I have to agree with you
(giggles) I'm good at this. ~v^

although my reasons for immortality are much more sinister, as long as its the kind of immortality where you wont die NO MATTER WHAT that means you could commit whatever crimes you want and not really have to face any consequences

just hope they don't realize they could seal me in concrete, I would be there for hundreds of thousands of years waiting for something to break me free XD
That's exactly what they would do. Also.... doesn't necessarily protect you from pain....

I feel like if I had the foresight to know that I would be ok, I could march my way through the pain
Morality. I would miss my family way too much.
On one hand, immortality would provide an opportunity to learn so much.

One the other hand, lack of urgency amplifies procrastination. Also, the whole lonely thing, and becoming an object of scientific study, and watching humanity repeat the same mistakes over and over, and the greater, more extended effects on sanity, etc, etc.

And over here on this knee helping me hold things? Like hell am I going to listen to some mysterious, creepy voice offering me an apple from an obviously sick tree. And I say that as someone who's probably eaten poisonous flowers before because I just didn't bother to check first. (Note: I absolutely do not recommend putting anything in your mouth if you don't know what it is or what's on it.)
I’d be immortal because it takes me forever to do things :P
Really though, there are only so many things I could create in one human lifespan. I want the time to experience everything, and when everything is done, I’ll make more things up. I’ll have forever to think about it ;)

Are the bacteria in my gut immortal? What if it’s the heat death of the universe and every star, every planet is dead, maybe new forms of life will sprout on me, the only habitable thing left.

On the humanity repeating the same mistakes over and over bit: To me, that's where your time to shine comes as an immortal. Having seen these things happen before, try to become their guiding light, and help them become better through that. ~v^

I'm sure you could figure out some way to turn things around after 10^150 years. Heat death takes a lot of time, and you would get to make use of all of it. :3

or wait until the day they launch the nukes and destroy everything, then you can become the god of the new world!!!
Using basic knowledge of evolution and how species evolve based off of the situation they are in you could mold basic life forms into whatever you see them fit to be FOR YOU!!!

Yeah, but I'd like to keep the cute critters that already exist going rather than having everything go splat and then waiting bored for eons for anything fun to happen. Like... the helping thing actually seems like less work, since you can already have a global reach as is. There's no guarantee there will be cats again if everything has to reset. I like those. Being a god/"god" seems like WAY too much work, too.

buuuuuuuuuut if you did succeed think of the POSSIBILITIES!!! And if you don't succeed just wait for them to ruin the earth again and you can try again, I'm sure you could find something to do in between the time. Perhaps you could put yourself into a sleep state where you slumber for eons and it only feels like seconds?

I mean... not really that many, other than I guess selective breeding. Sure you might be immortal, but not omnipotent. You can do things over long periods of time, but only as much as one person at once. To take full advantage of it, you need a society to influence. '^v^

Personally, I'd leave the apple, though I understand why some people would want immortality

For me, I believe I'm not emotionally stable to handle the constant repeated death of friends and loved ones. I would end up shattering mentally, and probably driving myself insane.

Im also not afraid of death as much as others are, which I suppose links into the fact that most people don't want to die. I, myself, have accepted that I will die one day, and it could be tomorrow. While I don't want to die, I see no point in fearing the inevitable.

Personally I don't want to see the world develop more than I have to. I feel like humanity has already gone far enough and going any further will break the world, but that's not something to discuss here.

Basically, I wouldn't be able to emotionally handle eternal life and all the lsoses that would come with it

Nah, folks refusing to listen (same as they do to elderly folks who have already lived to see mistakes repeated, same as they do with history books and whatnot) would make it exponentially worse.

it just becomes the question of if you want to take all control from the new species or humans with you infinite power you could make yourself infinitely strong and research forever until you find a way to surpass every limit you have essiantly making you a superhuman. With that power you could rule the world with an iron fist and force those mistakes to never happen again. Or would you rather let everyone have their liberties to do as they want and kick back and watch everything just replay itself over and over and over again?
