Thank you! I love it!
D8 !
So I worked all night on mine because I totally spaced the date.... and now I can't post it! I haven't had internet at home since I moved, and of course, work blocks any external drivers from uploading anything(this was my backup plan.... which failed).
Soooooooo.... I'm going to see if I can go bum off some establishments internet after work and see if I can post it.... after I tweak a few key points that are not quite right because I had to go from memory.
BUT plan on seeing mine sometime later today. ^-^;

Ok, so, I had a little hiccup. This whole contest ends right towards the end of my Finals here in Japan and I didn't have quite enough time to finish up. But I'm putting the flat color version out here for Petrichor. It'll be done in the next 48 hours at most! I have my last final in less than 12 hours!
Reinage! Thank you for my Visenya! It's adorable

PETRAAAAAAA! I love this! And how did you know that a basket of apples played a big part in a recent RP I did with her?! No... really! They were an actual turning point! This is amazinggggg I can't wait to see it shaded but it actually looks really stylish just as the flats, too, so I am glad I got to get two versions 8D
Thank you so much! She looks amazing! And you included her totem! THANK YOUUUUU /chases you down for violently enthusiastic hugs
EEEE I'm home and now I can post! I'm nervous to show this because I really went out on an artistic limb, but here goes...
I got f0x, and chose Lajqi as the character to draw. He had some basic physical info to go with him -- muscular, dark skinned, golden eyes, pelt around his waist. But then there's this strange story on his profile, about a princess who lives in a palace in a desert so hot that it melts those that displease her. It ends in tragedy, someone murders the princess and her honor guard.
Only you don't really get to know how that story relates to Lajqi. Was he a member of her honor guard, the only one that survived? Was he the murderer? Is he simply descended from the race of lionesque men who once defended the princess, and they tell this story amongst themselves as part of their cultural heritage? I wondered for awhile which one of these aspects to represent, and then decided that the part that really captured me was the mystery of it. We don't know which of these things he is.
So instead of trying to do a really polished digital piece, I tried to make it more painterly and impressionistic to match the fairytale sort of feel I got from the profile. I tried to make my marks apparent.
I put him the desert, in front of a burning palace. I gave him a scepter, but instead of grasping it firmly, he's just sort of got it in the crook of his arm, because I don't think the scepter belongs to him. It could be something he salvaged, something he pillaged, or just a prop to call back to his people's oral history.
Then, I added heat wave distortion to the image and played with the colors until it looked BOILING hot, as if it might melt travelers.
I used a ton of negative space around him to try and represent the vastness of this burning, melting desert. So I guess all in all I tried to illustrate a backstory/racial history more than just the character. Erf!

And now I need to add that scepter into his story somehow THANKS SO MUCH KIM! I realize the story on his page is short and mysterious, as it was sort of slapped together as I started a game with someone. Thank you SO much for the two images They're both going on his page!

AHHH I'm so glad you like it. I wasn't complaining about that mysterious backstory, I was eating up all the "what ifs" it left hanging. I cannot wait to read how he got that scepter, I was feverishly inventing tons of stories the whole time I was drawing it.
Well to clear a little of it up, he is the only surviving Sand Cat, but he did not kill the princess. More like he blames himself for not being able to save her. Perhaps the scepter belongs to another noble who committed the violence!
Aha! I thought maaaaybe it was like a memento, when he regained consciousness and found everyone dead, he took the scepter as a reminder of his failure/as a totem of his love. OR maybe it had magic powers and she gave it to him and told him to flee with it and take it to safety when she saw there was no hope. I didn't think it could have been a murder weapon, but maybe it could've! MYSTERY!
