Have a character with a sad backstory, or one that just has a goal that they will do anything to accomplish?
In between despairs times of running, he settles down for a few decades. Sometimes he searches for a contract, a soul to feed him for a couple decades.
As a contract holder, your character would be trading their soul for their goal. There will be a marking that is placed on the prey, which tells the demon where their prey is and when they are called upon.
Once the goal is completed, the soul will be consumed, unless different terms are agreed upon between the two contract holders.
The demon may offer the contractor to give three terms to follow always, as well as never be allowed to break these terms. Of course, demons have a natural aesthetic that most follow. They don’t sign multiple contracts at once, and they usually do things for a personal gain.

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.
