So I made a character in D&D about two years ago, Maydril. When my D&D group shut down, I decided to bring her on Furcadia.
I'm sure you can go read her history, but what she essentially does in the present is fighting evil and helping the poor/less fortunate. Therein, I run into a problem: Nobody plays poor/less fortunate characters (so it seemed, when I started on her), and everyone with an evil character had much incentive to discourage my play.
Many times I'd been told to change my character concept (not from authoritative figures as in 'she's bad, this needs to change x, y, z', but 'lol well that will never work, she sux, change it to fit everyone else!'), and offhand comments re: her anti-socialness as, essentially, myself making it harder to RP and that, once more, I should change that.
I generally try to find a reason for her to enter an RP so that, keeping IC as I do, she will not just walk off to do something else, and give the other person a chance to interact with her. I've gotten many a rolled eye in response to that.
Very recently, I've even had an evil-aligned character attack an innocent who was behind Maydril, and Maydril defended - the evil-aligned character's player argued that she didn't WANT to engage my character and she 'just' wanted to bite the innocent and run away. I've gotten many arguments like this, people refusing to allow me to play my character as she'd act.
I honestly stopped even playing her for almost a whole year because it was so depressing. I've finally found a place where she's starting to fit in, and I'm finally being able to flesh her out more. I suppose that's the light at the end of the tunnel, and I'm really hoping it sticks. REALLY hoping.
Thanks for reading. Anyone else ever have issues like this? Any advice on how to deal with it? I try to ignore most of the negativity and continue acting in-character. I've had a lot of people compliment me on how well I portray the personality, and I'm quite proud of that. But still the worry. x_x

Considering I know what you're going through (Quite literally. :p) I can say I've seen this, and have even encountered it myself. I don't really understand why evil aligned characters feel like they can do whatever they want and not stick around for the consequences of their actions. In most cases, things like this are frowned upon in most communities that I've been in, and I still think you should make mention to the Rah about the last issue.
Because if you think about it, it's similar to real life. I don't think you plan on randomly punching some innocent little five year old in the face and expect to get out of it unscathed. Because odds are, people, friends or not, are going to rally against you because that's .. just not cool! Even if you were "just" going to punch them in the face and leave, no one else is going to think its all fine and dandy. :p
I'm having an easier time explaining everything today than I had the other, and feel like avoiding people like that is the best bet. I'm not keen on people who aren't willing to take the punishment for their actions, either. At any rate, you really do play Maydril wonderfully, and I'd hate to see you retire her over people who are too stubborn to play realistically.
