Where do I start? Ok....

My Back Pages by Bob Dylan

Crimson flames tied through my ears, rollin' high and mighty traps
Pounced with fire on flaming roads using ideas as my maps
"We'll meet on edges, soon, " said I, proud 'neath heated brow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth, "rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white spoke from my skull, I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Girls' faces formed the forward path from phony jealousy
To memorizing politics of ancient history
Flung down by corpse evangelists, unthought of, though somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now

A self-ordained professor's tongue too serious to fool
Spouted out that liberty is just equality in school
"Equality, " I spoke the word as if a wedding vow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

In a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand at the mongrel dogs who teach
Fearing not that I'd become my enemy in the instant that I preach
My existence led by confusion boats, mutiny from stern to bow
Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now

Yes, my guard stood hard when abstract threats too noble to neglect
Deceived me into thinking I had something to protect
Good and bad, I define these terms quite clear, no doubt, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now

My favorite lyrics by Paul Simon...
A bit about Paul Simon

One of the best lyric writers of all time, in my opinion, is Paul Simon. Short little skinny New Yorker. Tortured soul. Part of the 60's and 70's crowd of singer-songwriters that started mixing rock 'n rock with folk music.

"Slip sliding
Slip sliding away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you're slip slidin' away

God only knows
God makes his plan
The information's unavailable
To the mortal man

We work our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we're gliding down the highway
When in fact we're slip slidin' away"

Tonight I'll sing my songs again
I'll play the game and pretend
But all my words come back to me in shades of mediocrity
Like emptiness in harmony
I need someone to comfort me...

Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again,

Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping,

And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,

'Neath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking,
People hearing without listening,

People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence.

The Boxer, cw: language

I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles,
Such are promises

All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared,

Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places
Only they would know

Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores
On Seventh Avenue
I do declare
There were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there, la la la

I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters
Aren't bleeding me
Leading me
Going home

A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the third world
Maybe it's his first time around
Doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound, the sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says, "Hey, Hallelujah!"

If you took all the girls I knew
When I was single
And brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match
My sweet imagination
Everything looks worse in black and white

These are the days of miracle and wonder
This is the long distance call
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all

The way we look to a distant constellation
That's dying in a corner of the sky
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry, baby, don't cry
Don't cry.

----

A winter's day
In a deep and dark December
I am alone

Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow

I am a rock
I am an island

I've built walls
A fortress deep and mighty
That none may penetrate
I have no need of friendship, friendship causes pain
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain
I am a rock
I am an island

----

Four in the morning
Crapped out
Yawning
Longing my life away

I'll never worry
Why should I?
It's all gonna fade

Now I sit by my window
And I watch the cars
I fear I'll do some damage
One fine day

But I would not be convicted
By a jury of my peers
Still crazy after all these years
Oh, still crazy after all these years.

When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all.

I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you...

Yeah, I guess that's mainly it. Love him.

That's beautiful and I honestly had never really listened to or read the lyrics of a song by Bob Dylan. I can never understand what he's saying.

So now, I get it. With lyrics that poetic I get it.
Memory off the musicla cats but in french

Minuit, tourne-toi vers la lune
Oublie ton infortune
Revis tes souvenirs

Mes souvenirs s'effacent

Touche-moi, ne me laisse pas seule
Seule avec la mémoire
De mes jours de bonheur
Si tu oses
Tu sauras toute la vérité
Vois... le soleil s'est levé

"We must be the change
We wish to see"

It only happens to be a single line from a song lyric so it qualifies for this thread. Regardless it has become a way I try to live my life. If we all lived like the the world was always watching, and made a true effort to change the world in favor of us all, the world would be a better place for us all to live by. I for one am trying to live this way.
From Slayer, “Repentless”, from the album Repentless.

Arrogance, violence, world in disarray
Dealing with insanity every ****in’ day
I hate the life, hate the fame, hate the ****in’ scene
Pissing match of egos, **** their vanity
Ain’t got the time, I don’t want anything from you
Feeding on my tolerance is all you ****in’ do
No looking back, no regrets, no apologies
What you get is what you see

Nice, Vol. Very inspirational.

I had to Google to see who said that and as I did I was like, "That's right. That's it." Gandhi said it. Inspirational quote...and apparently song lyric too. :) I try to too, but some days go better than others.

Oddly, this really resonates with my mood right now, which is unusual. Thanks for sharing!

Star of Tears from Xenogears, glorious game which I need to play this summer.

Your fingertips moving gently to my heart
the force of life goes on and on
the song remains like a haunting melody
of angel music held in chains
And i ask you
can we ease the pain of those who lost (the force of life goes on)
can we know the cause of all this sorrow (tears of loneliness)
can we catch the tears of a broken world
falling down upon the earth, falling down...
The waves of time take me deeper into you
a haze as blue as summer skies
and turn to find the key will not unlock the door
this broken bird away it flies
And i ask you
can we ease the pain of those who lost (the force of life goes on)
can we know the cause of all this sorrow (tears of loneliness)
can we catch the tears of a broken world
falling down upon the earth, falling down...

I had no ide Ghandi said it...but it's not difficult to believe. It's from one of my more favorite Within Temptation songs and the one line stuck in my head like a molten rod of iron.
**Yeah the full quote by Gandhi is "We must be the change we wish to see in the world."**

Journey to the Past - Anastasia (Broadway)

"People always say
Life is full of choices
No one ever mentions fear"

THIS ENTIRE SONG'S LYRICS

Airplanes

"Yeah, yeah I could use a dream or a genie or a wish
To go back to a place much simpler than this
Cause after all the partying and smashing and crashing
And all the glitz and glam and the fashion
And all the pandemonium and all the madness
There comes a time when you fade to the blackness
And when you're staring at the phone in your lap
And you hoping but them people never call you back
But that's just how the story unfolds
You get another hand soon after you fold
And when your plans unravel in the sand
What would you wish for, if you had one chance?"

AND

Swearing, same song^
"I'm guessing if can make some wishes out of airplanes
Then maybe oh maybe I'll go back to the days
Before the politics that we call the rap game
And back when ain't nobody listened to my mix tape
And back before when I tried to cover up my slang
But this is for the Decatur what's up Bobby Ray
So can I get a wish to end the politics
And get back to the music that started this shit."
This has always been one of my favorite songs, and I can relate to the lyrics in a way.

((Song here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ay1V9uXI7c))

I spoke to God today and she said that she's ashamed what have I become.
What have I done
I spoke to the devil today and he swears he's not to blame and I understood
'cause I feel the same
Arms wide open
I stand alone
I'm no hero and i'm not made of stone
Right or wrong
I can hardly tell
I'm on the wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell
The wrong side of heaven and the righteous side the righteous side of hell
I heard from God today and she sounded just like me
What have I done and who have I become
I saw the devil today and he looked a lot like me
I looked away
I turned away
Arms wide open
I stand alone
I'm no hero and I'm not made of stone
Right or wrong
I can hardly tell
I'm on the wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell
The wrong side of heaven and the righteous side the righteous side of hell
I'm not defending downward decending
Falling further and further away getting closer every day
I'm getting closer every day to the end to the end the end of the end
I'm getting closer every day
Arms wide open
I stand alone
I'm no hero
And I'm not made of stone
Right or wrong
I can hardly tell
I'm on the wrong side of heaven
And the righteous side of hell
The wrong side of heaven and the righteous side of hell
The wrong side of heaven and the righteous side righteous side of hell

One I come to like this decade was UMAI by Shireen. It sums up all religions fairly well.

If I...
would give you my clear skies
If I...
would give you all golden fields of grain
Strong legs and tireless hearts
An ocean as still as a lake
Would you still worship and pray?

And not forget my name

U…
U...Maaaa...iiiiaaaaa...
U...Maaaa...iiiiaaaaa.,,
U...Maaaa...iiiiaaaaa...

U...maaa...ia
U...maaa...ia

Instead I'll give you my storm
I'll give you my hail
I will tear out trees
Sweep up the seas
Destroy all the fields

And you'll reach for the sky
But in this mud you'll die
And you will pray
And lightning illuminates your faith
When lightning… uh lightning

If you sweet child
Never screamed to get your way
I will forget you… lying there
And sleep for a million days
And I hear your prayers

U...Maaaa...iiii

Instead I'll give you my storm
I'll give you my hail
I will tear out trees
Sweep up the seas
Destroy all the fields

And you'll reach for the sky
But in this mud you'll die
And you will pray
When lightning illuminates your faith
You will pray
You will pray
You will pray

U...Maaaa...iiiiaaaaa...

Lyrics by Annike Shireen
Ohh! I'm inevitably going to end up listening to a bunch of these. :)

Here are snippets of some of mine (content warning for language & adult type references if anyone ventures to check out the full songs):

The Stand - Mother Mother

Talk about space.
Well it's a beautiful place
But it's so damn cold
Just for the human race, but for the planets and the stars
And everything else and Mars
It's like paradise, spread out with a butter knife

Nighthawks - Whitehorse

Come on down from the ledge
With your pretty wings spread
Fly me through the steel towered night
When the cold air bites
When the alleycats fight
All the normals are shutting off their lights

Crystals - Of Monsters and Men

Lost in skies of powdered gold
Caught in clouds of silver ropes
Showered by the empty hopes
As I tumble down, falling fast to the ground

I know I'll wither so peel away the bark
'Cause nothing grows when it is dark
In spite of all my fears, I can see it all so clear
I see it all so clear
DarkandLight

Ooh so many.. currently this one though. I just relate..

Waving through a window from the broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen.

I've learned to slam on the brake
Before I even turn the key
Before I make the mistake
Before I lead with the worst of me
Give them no reason to stare
No slipping up if you slip away
So I got nothing to share
No, I got nothing to say
Step out, step out of the sun
If you keep getting burned
Step out, step out of the sun
Because you've learned, because you've learned
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
I'm waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
I'm waving through a window, oh
Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me?
We start with stars in our eyes
We start believing that we belong
But every sun doesn't rise
And no one tells you where you went wrong
Step out, step out of the sun
If you keep getting burned
Step out, step out of the sun
Because you've learned, because you've learned
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
Waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
Waving through a window, oh
Can anybody see, is anybody waving?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
Did I even make a sound?
Did I even make a sound?
It's like I never made a sound
Will I ever make a sound?
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
Waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
Waving through a window, oh
Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me? (oh)
Is anybody waving?
Waving, waving, whoa-oh, whoa-oh

Oh man. All these are so good. I am loving all the lyrics. Some are so dang poetic I can't stand it. I'm glad this thread caught on.

Riiight? I'm excited to check all of these out.
It was a great idea. :D
Thought of mooore:

Boats and Birds - Gregory and the Hawk

If you'll be my star
I'll be your sky
You can hide underneath me and come out at night
When I turn jet black
And you show off your light
I live to let you shine
I live to let you shine
But you can skyrocket away from me
And never come back if you find another galaxy
Far from here
With more room to fly
Just leave me your stardust to remember you by

What Sarah Said - Deathcab for Cutie

Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
And everyone lifts their head
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said

That love is watching someone die

Meet Me in the Woods - Lord Huron

How long, baby, have I been away?
Oh, it feels like ages though you say it's only days
There ain't language for the things I've seen, yeah
And the truth is stranger than my own worst dreams
The truth is stranger than all my dreams
Holy darkness got a hold on me

I have seen what the darkness does
(Say goodbye to who I was)
I ain't never been away so long
(Don't look back, them days are gone)
Follow me into the endless night
(I can bring your fears to life)
Show me yours and I'll show you mine
(Meet me in the woods tonight)
