It had taken some time, but I'd saved up nearly ten hundred dollars. It wasn't much, but, I just couldn't stand to be here any longer. California was all good and well for some people... But, not for me. Too many people knew about my heritage here, too many people knew who my father was. Too many people knew what that meant. I just couldn't deal with this shit any more.
There was just one place I could think of to go. One place that I'd heard dear ol' dad talk about that he just swore up and down he'd never go to again. Ariana County in Colorado. That's where I was headed. Apparently the sheriff and his lady love were hard asses that ran that place with an iron will.
Not to mention the fact that Tallynde Aswain was one of the Powers that Be, one of the Grey Lords. And she, along with her family and a whole slew of fae lived there as well. Yup. If dad wasn't going to be there, it wouldn't be any skin off my nose. I was tired of it all. Just. So. Tired.
You might be wondering what's so bad about my dad, huh? Why I'd want to run away and never deal with him again? No, it's nothing as nefarious as him molesting me, or anything like that. My dad is Fox. That probably doesn't make any sense to you, right? Well, let me explain. Fox is a spirit, a deity of my people. I'm Blackfoot, you see?
Now I don't want you to mistake dad for Silver Fox, the creator god. That's not him. He's not nearly so benevolent as that. My father was the Fox spirit of this story of the boastful suitor and many others.
I was once told that we were called Avatars. No, not the blue cat people from the film. (If only I was that tall!!) But, the literal term. A manifestation of a deity or released soul in bodily form on earth. I'm not sure what else goes along with that but hey, I'll figure it out as I go.
SO! As I was saying, it was off to Colorado for me!
It didn't take me but four days to get there on the Greyhound bus. That was four days of hell pent up on one bus after another. I didn't take much, just some clothes, the money I had, and a necklace my grandmother had made me. I never wore it, but I kept it. It was special, dyed bones on a leather thong. Fox heads carved of each bone. She spent a lot of time on it and... well... I was going to miss her.
When I got to Ariana county, I got off the bus and hunted down a hotel. I needed a shower and some real rest. Tomorrow I would go looking for work. Hopefully I didn't run into anyone that knew my dad.
