It had been quiet for a little while so Gary took the time to clean up the mess a bit better from the spilled beaker. He popped the top on a Tab and went and sat down in the living room for a few minutes to take a break. After a few more minutes he got up and peered out the window.
He realized the tape with the sound effects had run out in the window, so he went to the bedroom where the tape recorder sat, and flipped the tape over. After a few seconds, the machine cleared the leader tape and the organ music started back up. Gary peered out the curtain and saw another group of trick-or-treaters down the street and hoped they would stop by.

Isabella walked with a bounce in her step. This was her first Halloween she had experienced and the atmosphere of the event was something that caused most people to simply overlook her natural oddities. While Isabella had decided to dress as a
First was the blue skin, the truth was there wasn't anything she could do to rid herself of it, if there was she certainly would have found and utilized it in everyday life by now. Second was the slightly too big for her book she carried around that definately fit the whole Halloween theme, it just didn't look like it fit a cute cat outfit. Even so, there was nothing anyone would be able to do to pry it out of her hands.
Beside Isabella was her....'guardian'. The large muscle bound man wore a flannel shirt with suspenders holding up his jeans. This was the only thing that seemed normal about him, however. With a gaze that seemed to stare past the horizon and eyes that had been mostly greyed out, he barely seemed aware of what was going on around him. Despite the obvious signs in his face that he had mostly likely died long ago, his clothes were clean and he appeared outwardly normal, though a slight stench of death might be detected from those nearby.

While the zombified companion slowly lurched his way up past the garage door, Isabella wasted no time quickly wrapping on the front door with great vigor. As she did, the candy bucket in her hand she used to knock with bounced haphazardly on the door as she did. She stepped back and shouted at the top of her lungs:

in hand, and her book pressed to her chest in the other, the smiling Isabella looked over to the single story ranch house she was unaware belonged to one Gary Portelli. With a smiling glance up to her flannel wearing companion, Isabella took off, dashing over towards the door using the driveway to access it.While the zombified companion slowly lurched his way up past the garage door, Isabella wasted no time quickly wrapping on the front door with great vigor. It had been a few minutes since Gary had any visitors. The soundtrack playing through the open window was now on the sound of screeching bats followed by the toll of a distant bell tower. Gary heard a knock. "Oh, another one," he said to no one in particular since his roommate Shelley was out for the evening. He sat his can of Tab down on the coffee table and made his way towards the door, straightening his lab coat on the way.
He opened the door to a small blue-skinned girl. "Trick or Treat," she proclaimed eagerly. Gary had to study her a moment to figure out what she was. The large book she was clutching threw him off a bit. Behind him was a table with a white table cloth slightly stained with colored liquid. A few test tubes and beakers filled with blue, red, yellow, and green fluid sat spread out, giving the vague impression of a laboratory.
"Hello there," he said in his normal voice before he remembered to get into his mad scientiest character. "I mean, uh Hello zere!" Gary was now speaking in a poorly done German accent. "And vat might zhue be," he asked as he turned to grab his bowl of candy filled with miniature Hershy, Krackle, and Mr. Goodbars.

Isabella's eyes fell behind Gary a moment at the various liquids and stained cloth behind him before meeting his gaze once more. She twisted in place back and forth in excitement as he out on his best portrayal of what Isabella couldn't have ever guessed.
"I'm a cat!!" the girl exclaimed, lifting her candy bucket up as if in victory, not necessarily in a demand for candy. It was just....she was very excited for this holiday.
"Reawr......reawr...." she said with a giggle, mocking the noises a cat might make with silly exuberance. Her arm then fell back beside her and she stared up at Gary with a smile on her face, very curious at what he was trying to be, what the liquids were, and what was with that weird accent he was speaking with.
The guardian figure eventually walked up behind Isabella, standing only about a foot behind her and staring straight ahead. He didnt necessarily look at Gary....in fact he wasn't really looking at anything. he stared ahead still as if seeing directly through everything with those greyed out eyes and expressionless face that a parent might have after trick or treating until 2 in the morning. If the wind blew in thewrong right direction, Gary might be able to detect that scent of death he walked around with.
"What about.....zoo?" Isabella asked, trying her best to mimick the german accent Gary was using and not pulling it off very well. "Vhat are zoo....a'pposed.....to be?" she asked with a big gaudy smile on her face, clearly very amused by her own attempt at mimicking Gary. Her guardian said nothing....simply sood behind her waiting.

"Ah, yes, a putty cat, yah," Gary replied in the same cheesy accent. About that time, a tall man rounded the corner. He looked like a zombie. Gary assumed he was the little girl's father.
"Ah good evening," Gary said but noticed the man didn't make eye contact. He seemed to just stare expressionlessly off in space. Gary figured he was staying in character.
"What about the.....zoo?"
"Me," Gary repeated.
"Vhat are zoo....a'pposed.....to be?"
"Vell, I am Profesor Duffensmirtz," Gary replied. He wasn't sure if he pronounced the name quite the same when he used it previously, but it didn't matter. He was improvising and it was different kids at the door each time. It wasn't like they'd compare notes. "I am zee mad scientist, yah. Does zee kitty like zee chocolates?"
Gary offered the bowl to the little girl so she could help herself to whatever candy she wanted.

The presumed fatherly figure let out a slight groan in response to the greeting Gary offered him. If it was remaining in character he was working towards he appeared to be doing a good job.....an extraordinarily good job even.
Isabella thought to question just why Gary was pretending to be an angry scientist. What was it that had the scientist so angry? She had never heard of a mad scientist so she could only presume he must be angry about something when Gary suggested his costumes title.
The thought quickly left her mind, however, the subject matter being quickly dominated by the sole reason Isabella had knocked on the angry scientists door to begin with...candy.
"Yes!" the girl exclaimed and leaned over the bowl Gary offered with a dropped jaw to better investigate the shimmering packages of chocolate. It was a marvelous sight, something the girl had still not jaded to in her night of begging.
She realized she was going to have to put something down in order to retrieve the treats, and unbeknownst to anyone but her, that book was not an option....it never would be either. She knelt slightly and dropped the pumpkin shaped candy bucket from her left hand onto the ground and stood back straight.
"Uhhh," the girl pondered with her hand now just below her chin in a loose casual manner, poised to strike out at her decision when ready. Her hand slowly moved forward, and balled up around a small fist full of candies. She pulled them up and turned her hand over, opening it to reveal her prize.
"Is this okay?" she asked sincerely as she peered up to Gary, showing him the 4 candies in her hand. One was a Hershey bar, one was a Mr. Goodbar, and the remaining two were Krackles.

She seemed for a moment to struggle with her hands being full. Gary watched as she juggled the book and her pumpkin. Oddly, she opted to set the plastic jack-o-lantern down instead of her book.
It took the blue cat a moment to choose which candies she wanted. Finally, she grabbed a small handful of chocolate bars and showed them to Gary.
"Is this okay?" She seemed to be unsure of how many she should take.
"Ah yes, of course," Gary nodded. "Zhue should take zum for your Fa...uh... zombie friend, too! Vee haz plenty!" Gary glanced back at the expressionless tall figure.

Isabella's smile faded a little, still remaining but replaced by a slightly mused judgement of Gary at his suggestion. She glanced back up at the flanneled man behind her and back to Gary with a giggle.
"Zombies don't eat candy!" she exclaimed in between her laughter.
The girl reached down and tossed her acquired candies into her pumpkin bucket and picked it up. She stood up straight and looked to Gary, her smile fading into a more serious face now.
"I don't think you'd want to feed him...." she claimed, a smile then returning to her face, "....but thank you for the candy! MEOW!!"
With that Isabella turned and hopped off the porch playfully and nearly skipped down the driveway in excitement towards the next house. Her zombie companion slowly turned and trudged off after her, looking as if he was trying to keep up despite his apparent lack of motivation.
((thanks for the candy!))

"Ah, but of course," Gary agreed when the girl informed him that zombies didn't eat candy. She thanked him and hopped off the porch and headed down the driveway. Gary waved after her. "Happy Halloween," he called after her.
The rest of the night saw a steady stream of Trick-or-Treaters. Gary ran out of candy just after 9 o'clock. At that point, he blew out the candle in the Jack-o-lantern, turned off the porchlight, and turned off the tape recorder and closed the window. Gary decided to leave the table set up so Shelley could see it when she got home.
