Faye got out while Amy stayed in the car with their dresses. "It went good, that's all you need to know!" Amy called, and then waved, driving away. Faye walked towards Max, at first looking everywhere but at him. She smiled at the work he had done with the plants. "Can I help?"
Max leaned back on his heels and sighed, watching Amy drive away. "Geez. She's not one for hanging around, is she?" He looked over at her. "Oh, no, it's fine. The rest can wait for later. I was just killing some time." He grabbed his tanktop nearby and pulled it over his head. "Guess I lost track of time, though. I was planning to be showered and clean before you got here."
Faye shrugged and smiled at him. "It's okay. I don't mind, I can wait until you get cleaned up." She could see now, and was enjoying the sight of him again after almost a day had passed. She sat down on the doorstep, hugging her legs. "I think I'll try to see if I can place any of the constellations I learned about today."
Max watched her for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. Whenever you're ready, just come on inside." He stood up and stretched. "If you're still out here when I'm clean, I'll be out soon." He went along his way, going to shower and cleaning himself up, getting in clean clothes. He was just getting on his shirt, when he...felt something. A presence in his homeland, unwelcome. He ran. Faye. Faye was outside, unprotected. He burst out the door just in time to tackle a creature that pounced from the shadows. The two tussled on the ground, with various growls and noises, and then the creature was thrown into the shadows, where it ran off, yelping.
Max was groaning on the ground, but he soon got back to his feet. "Damn Mongrels." He looked over to Faye. "Are you okay?"
Max was groaning on the ground, but he soon got back to his feet. "Damn Mongrels." He looked over to Faye. "Are you okay?"
Faye had been obliviously examining the sky when the creature appeared. She watched Max struggle with it, standing nearby in case she could do something to help, but in the end, it wasn't necessary. Many times, her parents had had to deal with monsters who wanted to hurt them. She hated it, and hated seeing Max had to deal with stuff like that too. She ran over to him and gave him a hug. "If I am okay? You're the one who fought that thing." She pulled back just to check for any sign of damage.
Max had some bleeding scratches, but nothing serious. "Yeah, well I'm the one who's special. So it's totally fine." He smiled at her, and touched her face gently. "Sorry you had to see that. I get some Mongrels around, sniffing on my property sometimes, snooping around for trouble." He took in a deep breath and let it out, then ushered her inside. "Come on, let's get in where it's safe."
Faye looked at those scratches warily, her hands itching to have a magic wand and make them disappear. "Damn Mongrels." She repeated what he'd said before with a smile and then it was her, who took his hand this time, as she walked inside with him. "I guess I should've waited inside, after all. It's me who is sorry."
Max rolled his eyes. "Geez, it's not your fault, Faye. It's the Mongrels, they know better. I'm just glad you're not hurt." He looked her over carefully, then smiled and went to sit down. "So, about that homework. What do you need, Faye? What're you struggling with?" He pet her head gently. "Don't worry, I'm fine. The cuts won't last long." Especially if he drank some blood, but he wouldn't be doing that in front of her.
"Hey, I'm just worried." She shook her head and sat down too. "Well, I'm just glad it's over." Faye rummaged in her backpack and took out a Calculus book. "This is, the cause of my nightmares. Not matter, how hard I try, I just can't seem to understand this. I guess it's because I can't see the teacher explaining how to solve these, and have to figure it out on my own at home."
Max listened and looked at the book. "Ahhh, yes! I know this. I've done this quite a few times. The first time it came along to me, it...well, was very hard. But after a few times, I got the hang of it." He smiled and sat down beside her, starting to work on the Calculus. He made sure to keep going until she understood, and to clarify when she didn't.
Faye listened to him when he explained and after two hours of working, she was able to solve the problems she always struggled with. "Thanks. I'd never have been able to do this on my own, you know. And my parents suck at anything that has to do with numbers." She laughed and rubbed her eyes, feeling tired.
Max smiled as she finally got it and he nodded. "It's no problem. It takes a while to understand this stuff." He looked over at her. "Feeling better about it, though?" He hoped so. He liked doing something to be able to help her.
"Yes, don't worry. I think I won't be so lost at that class from now on." Faye took a sheet from one of her notebooks and scribbled something down. "Here's the recipe for the apple pie from yesterday." She smiled. "So you can bake it whenever you want. My way of thanking you."
Max smiled and took the paper. "Thanks, Faye. Though, I think I prefer baking with you." He went to tuck it away, but paused, wincing. His cuts weren't healing. In fact, they almost seemed to be getting worse. That didn't bode well. But he played it off, putting the paper on the table and standing up. "Well, I can't keep you late, or else your father might get suspicious again. Come on, let's clean up and I'll give you a ride home."
Faye didn't seem to notice something was off and nodded cheerfully. "Yup, sure. Curfew is at eleven so you're right, I should go." She suddenly felt odd, like when you have a bad feeling abbout something, but she wasn't sure about what exactly. Dismissing it as just being tired, she stood up too.
Max got her to the car and got in, then started driving off. The pain was getting worse. It was like a...a burning, almost. Max was unnaturally quiet on the ride to her house, and he parked in her driveway carefully. He got out to open her door for her, like he always did...
And suddenly the pain hit like a sledgehammer. As if all his cuts had suddenly been traced with a scalding hot iron. He cried out and fell to the ground in pain.

Faye didn't speak either, except for a few comments about school. When he opened the door for her, she swung her leg to get out but stopped when he, all of sudden fell to the ground. What was happening to him? She knelt next to him and saw the scratches looked worse now. She needed to take him inside. "Shhh... It'll be alright." The front door opened, and her mom came out, since she'd heard the car pull up.
Max groaned. "Damn...Mongrels..silver-laced.." Claws. The claws must have been covered in silver. But that meant they must have been sent there, instead of stumbling upon. Max couldn't even stand. The pain was terrible, he was weak and sweating.
Faye waved at her mother to help her and they both tried to get him to stand. "What happened?" She asked, all business now. Faye told her about it, and how the scratches had seemed unimportant at first. "Okay, I think I could help but I'm not sure." Faye wanted to ask him if that's why he'd been so quiet all that time, but decided to leave it for later.
Max was quiet, letting them stand him and drag him to the house, and probably onto the couch. "Faye.." His eyes were shut tight in pain. "We have a problem..." He was keeping his mouth shut as much as possible. "Your parents don't know. And I need...a drink. But my bottles are...back at the house." He shut up as a wave of pain flashed through him. In the light of the room now, it could be seen that the cuts were still open, and looking nearly burned along the edges.
