Faye didn't say anything either, just listening to the sound of the waves and the steady rhythm of his breathing. So she was surprised when he finally spoke. "I know. And my dad, isn't that scary. He just likes to act like that for the fun of it." She could begin to see the blurry shades of the sunset.
Max chuckled a bit. "Any dad is like that, I guess." He closed his eyes, holding her in his arms. "I don't really remember my parents." he admitted calmly. "Just the pictures I have of them. They're those old-fashioned kind. You'd probably like to see them sometime." He smiled a little.
Faye looked at him, her vision getting a little better as the sun continued its way down below the horizon. "Yup, of course. You have to show them to me." She smiled, dipping her feet into the sand. It was relaxing. "And if you happen to have funny baby pictures of you, all the better."
Max made a face. "As if I'd show you any of my embarrassing baby pictures!" He chuckled a bit and looked down at her, smiling. "The sunset is pretty, isn't it?" He brushed some of her hair from her face and leaned down to kiss her forehead.
Faye nodded, now at last able to see him clearly. She smiled again when he kissed her forehead and she placed a kiss of her own on his cheek. "Yes, it's beautiful, and way better seen from here than from my window." She said softly.
Max smiled widely as she kissed his cheek. He held her a little closer and nuzzled into her. "I don't recall being this happy for a long time, Faye. A long time." He sighed contently and watched the sunset with her.
Faye took his hand and held it gently in hers as an answer. She could get used to this. It was something she had thought would never happened, but her heart had outsmarted her mind again. She squinted at the sky when the first trail of light appeared and then another, and another one. "It's time!"
Max opened his eyes and looked up at the sky when she spoke. "Yeah, guess so." He smiled and watched it, holding her carefully. It was beautiful, those little lights streaking through the sky. He felt so small. It was a vast world, a vast universe. He felt so tiny compared to all of it.
Faye watched in awe as well, with a big smile on her face. After a few minutes, she leaned her head back on his shoulder. "I'm really glad you offered to come with me. It wouldn't have been this great if you hadn't."
Max smiled. "I'm glad I could come along." He kissed her head gently. "I'd rather be with you than anywhere else in the world, Faye." He took in a deep breath and let it out, watching the sky.
That made her all warm and fuzzy. She turned a bit so she could hug him and chuckled. "I'm very happy you think that way, because I do too. Even when we were just friends, it was like that." It amazed her how easy it was to just say what she wanted to say when he was around.
Max smiled a bit. "Yeah. Yeah, it was. When I first heard about you, I wanted nothing to do with you. But then I met you." He shook his head slightly and chuckled. "It's interesting how things can change like that..."
Faye laughed again. "Really? What must have Amy told you?" She dusted herself off and watched as the last meteors left their trail in the sky. "I was really nervous that day. I wanted to go, but I was afraid of how things would go."
Max chuckled. "Well, she had set me up with others before. And it didn't work very well." He smiled at her. "So...I didn't want to try again. Glad I did though." He closed his eyes and nuzzled into her happily. "What do you think? Glad you met me?"
"I'm sure it was the pie. It always works." She joked and then looked down at their hands. "Of course I'm glad. Life is much more interesting now and for the first time it's not so bad not being able to see during the day." She shook her head and laughed. "Cheesy."
Max laughed. "Of course the pie." He listened to her speak and lifted a hand to brush her hair from her face. "It's not cheesy, it's honest. I don't come to school half the time anyways, so you're really not missing much if you don't get to see my handsome face, right?" He grinned down at her playfully.
Faye pulled her jacket tighter around her since it was cold at night and smiled at him. "I can't see you, but I can hear you." She reminded him. "I can hear you talking with Amy, and just... talking in general. It does make a difference. I do notice. Maybe not before because I tend to tune out the voices I don't know."
Max smiled a bit and leaned in, holding her closer. He tried to keep her warm, but he wasn't that warm himself. "Should we get home? Can't have you freezing to death, after all."
She sighed. It felt good being there, but her parents had just let them be together, so she better not push her luck. "Maybe we should." She was not happy about it, but she also had to study some time. "Or else, who knows what my crazy parents will say." Her gaze rose to the sky once more but there were only stars.
Max chuckled softly. "Yes...your crazy parents." He got to his feet and helped her to hers as well, then walked back to the car. He turned on the heat to help a little, then drove her back to her house. Once he was there, he walked her to the door and kissed her forehead. "Goodnight, Faye."
