Maeror (played by JustaBitEvil) Topic Starter

Maeror chuckled to herself, thinking Avri was quite funny and cute. She had picked up on the words, and was intrigued to see what Avri would do whenever she did meet her again. It would be a confrontation, she suspected. The fiend was confident in her abilities, though she knew it might be wise to err on the side of caution. Maeror didn't know the scope of the child's abilities, even if she had already witnessed some of them. She lounged in the final room, shadows slipping and circling around her. The fiend almost seemed like a woman watching a funny television show. She was leaned back and comfortable, curious but not on the edge of her seat.

The skinwalker inched forward as Avri deciphered the words. A low growl was emitted, the moss torn up by it's claws. Whenever she started to speak it's name, the creature flinched and shrieked. The noise was deafening in the small space. Cracks ran along it's face, arm, flank and thigh. Flesh along the cracks turned into what looked like dust and started to flake away. She hadn't spoken the name completely, but she had gotten close enough that she had wounded it. The damage was more lasting than the cuts she'd created with her dagger. The skinwalker staggered in it's slow progress toward her.

"This is a fun game," Maeror laughed to herself. "Only partially correct," the Shadowfiend remained patient, waiting. She gestured with a hand, and light with a bioluminescent quality lit up the letters. Avri had spirit and had done well, she deserved a hint or two. The skinwalker shook itself, it's movements were limited now but it was still dangerous. "Too stupid to read?" it asked in it's shrill voice, coughing but it still sounded mocking. If the beast was wiser, it wouldn't have said something that might anger her. Perhaps it was hoping to break her spirit, make her question herself so she might falter and become vulnerable again.

Avri stared with a bit of shock and awe at how the name deteriorated the creatures flesh. This was a type of magic (she presumed) that she had never heard of. The sight of the creature held her attention, and so despite Maeror's attempts to guide the pronunciation by lighting key letters up, Avri never looked back to find them.

Instead, the creature spoke, in an attempt to mock her, but she saw it as a frail attempt. The working defeat of the skinwalker combined with her anger at Maeror saw the child's confidence returning, and her retort to the creatures harassment was hostile.

"Are YOU too weak ta FIGHT, Nah lich chi-chan? she hollered in response, pointing the tip of the dagger at the creature and boldly walking towards it ready to swing if necessary. "Too weak ta hear yous name, Nah lich chi-chan? An dumb 'nough to make it in th' wall, Nah lich chi-chan?" It was clear she presumed more mentions of the name would further wound the creature.

Should the creature continue to be effected by the name calling, Avri wouldn't waste time. Shouting the name over and over she saw the end of this fight coming, and dashed at the skinwalker shouting it's name repetitively, ready to leap at it and swing that dagger in an attempt to finish the cursed creature off.

Maeror sighed to herself, delicately putting a hand over her eyes. Exasperated over how her clue was missed, she thought the girl was just never going to get it. This would be going on for quite some time. She shifted her weight, placing an elbow on the arm of the chair and palming her chin. The fiend had not anticipated that a human child might not be able to read well, then again she knew very little of how they were schooled. Whenever Avri still came up with a tactic that seemed to be working, she tilted her head and sat up more.

The skinwalker looked like it was literally falling apart at the seams. It growled viciously and looked ready to lunge, wanting to kill her quick. Movements that had been swift only moments before faltered, it swiped a claw toward her but the beast wasn't as quick as it had been before. "Little wench . . . " it snarled, the top of it's snout wrinkling up as long fangs were revealed. Despite how fearsome it was trying to be, the combined anger and naming was making it too weak to fight well. Each time it's name was mentioned, more cracks appeared along it's arms and legs. More of it's flesh crumpled up and fell, landing as what looked like dust and small chunks of rock on the dirt and moss underneath. It fell, one of it's legs giving out altogether. The creature was trying to speak, but it's words came out garbled and it coughed up dust. At first the beast seemed angry, but as she dove toward it with her dagger it realized it's fate. A look of terror came over it's ghastly visage before her dagger struck the center of it's skull. It's head split in two as it's body slumped, blood welled up around the blade. A mix of gray and pink flesh was revealed beyond bone that had been split open.

Blood leaked from the numerous other splits in it's flesh, as if something holding them back had failed when the creature had died. It was so dark it was almost black. The viscous liquid pooled underneath the beast, and it's tongue lolled from it's mouth. An audible click could be heard, and a creak as the door swung open just a hair. Beyond, Maeror was in disbelief that the girl had managed to pull it off anyway. She blinked and shook her head, wanting to be composed when the child entered the room. A gentle smile graced her features instead. Maeror sat in a room that just had the chair and a table within. The door that had opened would lead down a plain hallway, with an open doorway leading into the room where the fiend waited.
Avri (played by Alien_Princess)

Avri wrenched the dagger out from the skin walkers skull and stared down at it for several moments catching her breath. Being coated in victory was nothing new to the girl, and no longer seemed to bother her. She was fine with being dirty, it was being hungry she couldn't stand. One last kick was all she offered the defeated creature, with angry eyes still peering at it.

Before she could even think about the doorway she needed to penetrate, her head turned over her shoulder hearing the click of it opening. She recalled Maeror's claim of there being two rooms, and so she presumed the fiend would be on the other side of the door. Turning suddenly in the direction of the door, Avri nearly stomped her way towards it.

"Your turn," she said to herself with serious eyes dedicated to the doorway. She wasn't herself sure what she would do when she was presented with her puppeteer, but the anger in her which had been taken out vastly on the dog like creature now slumped in a mess hadn't quite expired.

Casting the doorway aside, Avri was hoping to see Maeror standing there. Should the fiend be present, Avri, without words, would descend quickly upon her. Arriving in front of her she pulled back the dagger and swung it hard towards what she would perceive as a non-vital part of the body, not putting an incredible amount of skill into the attack. In truth, it was something between a warning shot, and something to clearly catch the fiends attention and express Avri's dissatisfaction.

"YOU TRICKS ME!!!!" the girl shouted with furious eyes and an angry expression. She simply stood there, then, awaiting a response without further physical assault, at least for the moment.

It had been centuries since any mortal had tried to attack Maeror with a blade. She was still lounging in the chair, and this combined with her shock made her reaction delayed. The fiend pulled out of the way just in time, hopping up out of the chair. Once she did get over her surprise that any mortal would dare attack her, she laughed. "You do have some fight in you." The intrigued grin returned. Her voice was like a whisper, yet perfectly audible. "Yes, I tricked you. It was the most fun I've had on the material plan in decades. And because of your fight with the demons, you were in a perfect condition to be tricked. I have a feeling you wouldn't have been so easy to manipulate if not for that fight." As she spoke, she directed her gaze toward Avri.

The Shadowfiend was focusing on the girl, and she concentrated to try and influence Avri's emotions again. The feeling was much more foreign if one wasn't in a receptive state, like some emotional intrusion. She tried to make the girl feel fearful, an unexplained feeling of dread and terror attempted to take over Avri's thoughts. The fiend did not expect to be successful, it was merely a way of teasing her. And it was a test, she wanted to know how strong Avri was when she battled the manipulation that was being thrust upon her.

Maeror continued, "You might also be relieved to know that none of that was even real. Or would you be even more furious? It was quite lovely to watch you go through those challenges. You have potential. It's no wonder the demons lust for your blood." She gestured toward the bag of candy, and it floated forward along with the cape. "This was an experiment, something I wanted to see if I could do with a device I recently acquired. It went very well, partly thanks to you." The fiend did not try to influence Avri's emotions for more than a few moments, lessening her concentration and letting the effort go.

"You can keep the dagger as well, provided you don't try to slash me with it again. If you attack demons with it in the real world, it won't cause them to break apart. But it will cause a wound that will fester and kill. I'm unsure of what it's called, such blades usually have a name. The warlock who owned it is indisposed." She stood a couple of yards away from Avri, still smiling. She was ready for another attack, given how angry the girl was. The bag of candy spinning and floating in front of her, paired with the other offers, might also help.
Avri (played by Alien_Princess)

Avri felt it, and in her less mentally vulnerable state, and more informed as to Maeror's abilities, she was ready for it.

Even in her anger she felt the momentary fear inside of her, pumping a shot of adrenaline through her and cooling her face in a single second. It was as if she had just seen Maeror pull a gun on her, and the instant observance of it stabbed her with the sudden fear. Still, it felt somehow artificial, as if it wasn't Maeror pulling the gun, but perhaps watching this on a movie screen where she had anything but anticipated the action.

Realizing quickly it was the fiend, she grimaced, and pushed back the feelings to the best of her ability. The seemingly mocking mention of the entire scene being fake made this easier.

Anger flushed into her again, and she quickly identified this shadowfiend as no better than the demon lord who attempted to manipulate her into his own army. Had Avri refused and attempted to leave, would Maeror have accepted that? Or would she have just tricked her again...making her believe she left and then playing her sick games. Avri was quickly building a hatred for Maeror given the comparison between her and Tiahamut.

Still.....candy. As much as she disliked her, she saw the rewards as earned, deserved. She stepped forward and took the candy and the Cape, stepping backwards with them refusing to allow her attention to stray from the fiend. Setting the items beside her, she held the dagger up in front of her, staring down at it and coming up with a wonderful idea.

Her eyes moved to Maeror and her expression changed. A smile donned her face now, though not one of genuine joy. A devilish grin took her, large and proud with intense giddy eyes fit for an executioner who truly enjoyed his job.

"I has a idea," she said softly, pointing the dagger directly at Maeror now, "You c'n keep th' dagger....but I gets ta stab you withit jus' once.....in th' leg. An you can't stop me."

The devilish grin only increased at the thought....maaaaan stabbing Maeror would feel good. She doubted the fiend would go for it, and so she wondered about other possibly trucks she could employ in the next moment to show Maeror a taste of her own medicine.

The shadowfiend found herself impressed against her will as her manipulations were rejected. The girl had managed to ground herself and thwart the fiend's attempts. Maeror sighed to herself. This one was too willful, too angry to be used easily. It would take some subtle and indirect strategy. Well, this had been fun and enlightening nonetheless. She refrained from trying to influence Avri again for the foreseeable future, not wanting to waste energy on it. The fiend only had so much energy, and she had to be careful about how she used it. Putting on this charade had taken a substantial amount of it, even with her abilities being amplified due to what she'd found within the warlock's house.

She did look upon the girl with mild amusement as she accepted her rewards despite how angry she was. She was more wary of Avri now, in case she decided to attempt a surprise attack. Whenever she saw the wicked grin, the fiend had even more reason to be on her guard. Her amusement shifted into what might have been disappointment, or impatience.

Maeror lifted an eyebrow, her chin tilting up as her expression became lofty. The fiend should have expected such, she supposed. "Tsk, tsk. I don't fancy being restricted while my physical form repairs itself. There's too much to do on his plane." She judged that Avri was likely to try and attack her with it anyway. "If you're going to be that way, then I'll be taking that back." She looked at the weapon, focusing her will on the object. The dagger would be yanked on, as if someone had snatched at it and tried to rip it away from the girl's hand.

((Please don't make chance rolls on something directly relating to my own characters ability unless we first discuss it :) thanks))

The dagger yanked forward suddenly and out of instinct her grip quickly tightened. Her entire arm pulled the rest of her body forward and she gave in a single step bracing herself to keep the weapon in her possession. Still the strength of the pull seemed stronger than her small weight and strength could bear, but Avri wasn't ready to just give up.

"More tricks?" she grunted out pulling at the dagger with all her might. "Well I's has tricks too! she shouted angrily, and held her hand up towards Maeror. It wasn't a weaponized blast of magical energy that released from her palm. No, she still wanted to stab Maeror, but barring that as an idea she thought she'd try to let Maeror stab herself.

And portal of pure blackness appeared before Avri, a portal one could see though only after several moments passed. The connecting portal, Avri emitted behind the shadowfiend, set just about chest level on her back side. She hoped the exchange she was about to surprise Maeror with would happen quicker than she could anticipate.

As soon as the portals appeared, Avri released the weapon and allowed it to fly into the portal. Once through, it would exit through the other portal bringing the dagger directly at Maerors back, and the portals would quickly disappear once that had happened. Even if it didn't work the way the girl wanted, she figured the distraction was good enough for escape.

Counting the dagger as a casualty in the attempt at stabbing Maeror, Avri quickly turned and grabbed her candy and cloak, using the moment to beat a hastey retreat back out the door regardless of whether the attempt was successful or not.

Maeror could move things that were 25 to 30 pounds, so she was able to put quite a bit of force into the pull. She increased her force whenever Avri fought it. The fiend found herself feeling suspicious whenever the girl raised a portal from herself. She loosened her 'grip' because she did not want the blade to be lost in the portal. By the time she was starting to let go, it was already sailing through. Maeror thought it had been lost to the portal. The weapon was not particularly valuable to her, but the act of defiance incensed her. She stalked forward, the sound of hooves stomping could be heard rather than footsteps from her apparently delicate feet.

The shadowfiend did not sense the portal behind her, too focused on Avri. She froze when she felt the dagger hit her back. Using her powers to immediately tear it out, she sensed that she was wounded. Not mortally so, but it would take some time to recover. Blood did not pour down her back, instead black mist was pouring from the wound. She used her last bit of energy to summon shadow people that would run after Avri and chase her from the house. Their eyes shone red thought there were few other distinguishing features. They moved in a clumsy, almost cartoon-ish manner. Despite their lack of coordination, they were fast. Their touch was not something that would harm, but it would cause a cold feeling of dread that made it difficult to think or move to seep through an individual.

Moving the creatures from the warlock's place to here had taken the last of her strength. She vanished into a puff of black mist, the deep purple band around her left wrist became an orb and dropped to the ground with Maeror in it. The fiend had reverted to a state that would allow her to heal. The orb was impenetrable and the same color, though it couldn't be seen through. It was light enough to be carried easily. She would stay in this state for a few days until she could recover. Once that happened, she would go after Avri for revenge. The fiend had a few days to come up with something.

The clown would make no move to interfere with Avri when she ran out of the house. He did jump, crying out from shock at the appearance of the girl. The shadow people did not chase her beyond the confines of the house. All of the creatures and beasts that had been her before were nowhere in sight. The house was like any other, if neglected and barren. Broken and sparse furniture, normal rooms that seemed cramped after how vast they'd been made to be, were empty. The shadow people howled and keened, moving as if they were unfamiliar with moving at all. They hung about the threshold, prowling but unwilling to go outside for some reason. The clown had finally decided he'd had enough and ran away at the sight of them.

In the empty, forlorn room the orb that contained Maeror pulsed with a mix of faint light and shadow. It was quiet. It would remain that way for a few days until the fiend could emerge and then track down and gain vengeance on Avri. She didn't plan on killing the girl, but she had every intention of making the girl regret what she had done. The fiend would wait patiently for now, secure in the knowledge she'd recover from this wound. It was a wound to her pride, as well as her flesh. She knew there was a possibility someone might find her and pick her up, though she thought it to be a slim one. The shadow people disappeared soon after Avri's departure, walking through the house aimlessly before fading away.
Avri (played by Alien_Princess)

With Maeror being able to pull so fiercely, it was likely Avri would slide slightly in her direction before releasing the dagger into the portal, which would have inevitably sent the child back onto the ground as she fell away from it.

It was all she could do to grab her candy and cloak before glancing back at the shadow fiend who summoned shadow minions in a seemingly irritated rage. Avri audibly gasped in a high pitched girly manner as she saw this, but had already been fleeing towards the exit when they came after her.

The run was short, and Avri had a head start on them, and so she figured she could easily get out of the house before they caught her. She did not anticipate just how fast the creatures would move, however, given their haphazard style of traversing simple terrain such as the wooden floor of the house. Avri's short legs beat that floor harshly in a desperate attempt to escape them, but her small stature had her at a disadvantage, and the creatures quickly began catching up to her.

It was in the threshold of the doorway which led outside that they caught her, a single hand reaching out and attempting to take hold of her shoulder. The effect was immediate, and with a loud shriek of fear, Avri stumbled over her own feet out of the doorway and rolled down the steps. The clown jumped up in shock at her arrival, and despite the pain this caused in her injured hand, Avri knew there was no time to waste.

Quickly she stood up with the cloak and candy still in one hand, and without, at first, looking, she continued darting off down the roadway with the pained girlish yelping reflecting the throbbing feeling of injury her hand held. It was only about a block away she glanced back, noticing now that the shadow creatures weren't following her. It bore little relevance to her speed, though, she now desperately wanted out of this town.

She continued running with her fears shedding away. Despite what some might call a loss, Avri felt accomplished....she was the winner in that house by her perception. She had won out against the shadowfiends games, taken her prize of candy and cloak, and even showed her vengeance to Maeror before leaving, largely unscathed by her shadow monsters.

As she slowed to a jogging pace, eventually reaching a simple walk as she walked out of town, she smiled. It wasn't the joyous smile of a child who just got her candy, no. This was the sly smirk of a competitor who just bested her opponent, and walked away in cocky glee. She was confident she would never see Maeror again, but glad to know she had left her imprint on the shadowfiends life.
