Forums » Smalltalk » Older male OC's, what is your opinion on them?

MasterWinter

Hiya all, Winter here.

So. This question comes up after viewing several elderly male bases on Pinterest. I'm meaning some good looking, well to me they are, and bad azz elder men.

Like this Moriarty from the Fate series

Or Col. Sanders from KFC

Or this bad azz with pink roses

And my personal fave. Valkenhayn from Blazblue

Are elder men something that people would rp with?

Now. In case you are wondering, let me gently remind you all of something about me: Smut is never a must in rp with me. So if your concerned about smut rp with an elder OC, don't worry about it.

I don't often make elder OC's, I just don't. The few that I do have, I mostly rp them with Krispy since she has no preference really. Heck in our rp universe, she's attempting to put my Valkenhayn based OC in a relationship with a younger woman.

Note that while I don't know how much younger Krispy's OC is, I can assure you she's well above 18. Just wanted to get that out of the way, in case you were wondering.

Romantic stuff is also not required when rping with me in general, so that is also something you don't need to worry about if I were to create and put up an elder OC guy.

IF there is someone would want romance or smut worked into the rp, that is that person and their interest. No judging others or being mean over it. I just want to know in general if I put up an elder looking male OC, would there be possible takers if my guy fit what your looking for for an rp?

My old morally grey Ranger Halasian never seems to lack to opportunities. I have a somewhat Middle Age FBI agent as well who has a tough time finding an rp.

I think it is a preference thing. Having a browse through the character profile list it seems there is an abundance of male and female twenty something vampires and werewolfs, so having a bit of age-diversity is nice. Whether anyone wants to rp with middle age or elderly characters is an interesting question.

I use NCIS's Leroy J. Gibbs as base for my own lycan who is part of the supernatural branch of NCIS. If I put him up here, once I got him more fleshed out, I'm sure he would possibly have a tough time finding peeps to rp with as well.

I agree with you on the preference thing. That seems to be the case for most things in general. -shrugs- if it is, then it is. i'm probably gonna go ahead and work on some older OC's when I get the chance.

In truth, I love a mature character. I've played them in the past and I've also partnered with them. Older male characters are some of my favorites, and I can't really pinpoint why.

I will keep you in mind, for when I work out some mature characters.

I cannot say why you would favorite them. Maybe because not many venture to portray them? Or because they aren't your typical youngster OC? Just guessing. ^-^

Perhaps it is because I've always been fond of older men. From my experience, they seem to be less rambunctious and more level-headed, and they are usually portrayed as such in roleplay, from my experiences. Though to be fair, I have had very few.

I wouldn't mind playing one with you. However, I just joined a few hours ago, and I do not have any characters created on this website.

That is true, most older men are like that.

Ah! Well welcome to RPR! If you need any help with anything, let me know. And no worries, take your time to get settled here.

Thank you. I appreciate the welcome.

I noticed your comment on my introductory post. My time LARPing was brief. The group leader, he... well, we had a few unfortunate incidents that caused me to distance myself from him, his family, and even the hobby. Now, I stick to generic roleplay and the occasional DnD.

Well I love old man badasses no matter if they are antagonists, allies or mentor figure. While I don't have them as my main's, I like when they appear or I introduce them. Cause no matter the world they have to be badass to life that long enough.
The older I get, the more unrealistic (and tedious) I find the 20-something that is an expert in their field or has already managed to claw their way to the top of some tech company. Bring on the older characters! They may not be in their physical prime, but they've got enough life experience to make it more believable that they've risen to the top of their field.
Even though I don’t have any on my RPR roster, I do enjoy writing and writing with older/mature male AND female chars. They’re really fun because there are so many life experiences that attribute to their personality, behaviors, habits, etc.
I think older OCs offer a maturity not often portrayed in rps. I honestly have no problems with them and had, in one rp a long time ago, had my younger female entangled with one. I would be absolutely overjoyed you see what you come up with. ^^

Ya sometimes I just have a side elder guy, but I got to thinking it be nice to have one as a main for a change. And you are right, they have to be badazz to live as long as they did, even if it's a supernatural person.

While it is true older people aren't in their prime, I don't make my older male OC's to be overly frail. Especially if they aren't human. i mean I do give them some physical issues, so even if they aren't human they aren't perfect.

I have a Japanese Warlord for the Sengoku era who is a werecreature. He's got joint pain, limps in both his legs, and his knees are bad. I don't yet know why he never healed, but I just have it that even with him being supernatural, he is still vulnerable.

I've yet to try rping an elder woman. Nothing against them, I just haven't done so. Maybe I will sometime.

Soon as I manage to get one up, I will make certain to inform you so that you may look them over!
I would certainly rp with an elder if it fit into the rp idea I had. Honestly I really don't see there being a big enough difference between elder and adult/young adult that would stay my own personal interests, though the physically weaker yet experienced mind would offer a fun and interesting dynamic I think.

Actually I have a couple of little girl characters (8&9 yr old) I think would make for some very fun, interesting, and potentially sweet and even heartwarming moments in an rp with an elderly man (or woman).
Being in my mid 50's gives me a unique perspective. I believe that experience and the ability to draw on that can make the roleplaying one that is richer and fuller in some circumstances. Having seen the world 24 countries and not just for a hot minute gives you perspective to pull on and give an in-depth view of life in certain areas of the world.

I will also keep you in mind, for when I can manage to get an older male OC up. I find it funny, to an extent, seeing someone who is tough in their own way, yet at the sight of a little kid, they just break down their hard azz shell and are so humble to the kids. Well. I know it doesn't happen all the time. But I've seen on Facebook how someone who looks like a badazz, sits in a pink room with a little girl at her tea party. And the text of course is something like: Doesn't matter how badazz you are, you sit and have tea when she wants a tea party.

O.O Wow! I am impressed, and find it so cool, that someone in your age range rp's! I'm not meaning to sound like it is unheard of, or something of the like. I just rarely know of adults in their 40's and up who rp. So I find that to be very cool!

May I ask if you have any suggestions, or advice to give to one like me, concerning crafting an older male OC? Any helpful advice is appreciated. Thank you all the same, for posting to this!
I have both old male and old female characters, and they are some of my most popular OCs. The range of experiences they can draw on is vast, but what I love most is having all that life story out there open for RP in the past as well, and having to be mindful of how it shaped them.

As others have said, the older I get the more I smile at the characters made to be 18-20 with lots of experience and power. Unless of course there is a supernatural element which explains it (such as a vampire and stuff). Most of my babies are barely still young or even middle aged. But then again, I am older than you. :D
Sounds like this thread is leaning towards silver fox types rather than just "older men" if I go by OP's pictures. YMMV but the discussion here is quite a romanticized view of older men, who can be just as brash, impatient or without wisdom like their younger counterparts. There's a few "cool old guy types" that caught my eye while browsing RPR but I don't think I've ever seen any characters old enough to be people's grandfathers who were 'just' the nice grandpa type.

While I am very rarely active here on rpr or on any Discord chats/servers I used to be in (see profile) I happened to be browsing tonight. And not only am I very tired and bored, but I am also quite interested in this particular topic. I myself have only played older characters into their forties (males mostly).
And while I do not have the pleasure of being so experienced in life, as I am still quite young and am always making mistakes (life atm oof), I find I quite enjoy playing older, mentoring/nurturing characters.
It's a different perspective on life, to try to see the world through the eyes of someone with years of history behind them.
However it's not a genre I've often seen on rpr, nor have I met many who were interested in such an rp, besides a few whom I wish I had the time and energy to rp with.
Should I ever have the emotional stability again to dive into lengthy, detailed rps, I would be interested for sure.
As it is, feel free to view my profile or send me a pm, and I'll try my best to be available to chat if you'd like.
This last particular statement is aimed at whomever would be interested, not just poster :)
I think this would be quite a hilarious topic when it comes to my character's ages!

All I can think about is Mia (age 6, give or take) being nice and sweet, and the old man just realises that Mia is actually way more mature than most 6 year olds. So... he asks her name. She gives the real one, and he's having an existential crisis over the difference in ages.

Either way, I really think this is a good idea and I don't usually do romance because of my characters preferences. So yeah.
