So u have this half-elf bard who has the "far traveler" background which I plan on using for the basis of her backstory. Looking through all the other foreign countries I wanted to pick Evermeet as her place of origin. She's a half-elf that was born on an island full of elves so I thought it would make sense.
The problem with that is... non-elves such as my character need permission from the Queen on the island to live there are whatever. From what I read the inhabitants are somewhat racist.
So how can I write a believable backstory with all that in mind?

This might be too obvious of a solution, but if she's a half-elf, maybe she was permitted to stay on the island because of her partial elf heritage? A family member could have vouched for her. Bonus points if her family was well-to-do and had some sway with the queen.
Another option could be that she was permitted to stay to be of use to the royal court as a servant or musician or w/e. She could have left the island in protest of her prejudicial treatment.
