Raeliel didn't look at him. More lightning flashed and thunder rumbled and she flinched. "When I was a little girl, I got caught out in a storm." she blurted, rushing her words to try and explain so that he wouldn't think she was pathetic or childish. "I'd wandered away from my tutors and a big storm came, and I couldn't find my way home. Trees started falling from the lightning and wind, a-and one hit me." She closed her eyes tightly. "When I woke up I was stuck under the tree...I was there for hours until they could find me..." She shuddered. More thunder caused her to jump slightly again.
Saelhil watched her for a few moments, then quietly approached. He crouched in front of her and gripped her hand. "You're safe now, alright? I won't let anything hurt you." His voice was soft and gentle; he wasn't good at comforting, but he would do what he could to help her.
Raeliel looked at him as he took her hand, then she looked away shamefully. She was terribly ashamed of her fear. Another crack of lightning and thunder came and Raeliel quickly hid her face in her hands. She was shaking. No matter how much she tried to be tough, this was something that haunted her. Something that was ingrained in her from childhood. She was terribly afraid of storm.
Saelhil sighed, watching her for a few more moments. He stood and tugged her up out of her chair. "Come on," he said quietly. "I'll start a fire... It will get pretty cold once the rain starts." And as if on cue, a crash of thunder started pouring rain on the coast, and howling wind blew the water against the house.
Raeliel stood when he tugged her to, listening to his words. When another crash of thunder brought rain, she jumped and clung to him. All her mind could tell her was that the house was going to cave in. Just like the tree fell on her, the house would fall on her too. Tears slid down her cheeks. Not from fear, exactly, but also from shame. She felt so pathetic. But there was just nothing she could do for this.
Saelhil hugged her tightly, trying to give her some form of comfort. He allowed her to stand there for a while, then he quietly began pulling her towards the sitting room so that he could start a fire in the fireplace, and get the room warm and hopefully give her a bit of comfort.
Raeliel stayed huddled against him for as long as he would allow, flinching every time the thunder roared. When he moved her towards the sitting room, she followed, sitting down carefully and watching him as he started a fire. She was very quiet, curled up on her seat and trying to avoid looking at any windows or anything, and trying to ignore the howl of the wind that was batting against the house.
Saelhil got a nice fire going, and he went to close all the curtains, making the room lit solely by the fire, giving it a warm, cheerful glow. He grabbed a blanket from a basket nearby and draped it over Raeliel before sitting down beside her. "What do you usually do during storms?" he asked, hesitating before putting an arm over her shoulders and pulling her close.
Raeliel relaxed a little with the fire, even more so when he wrapped her in a blanket and held her close. She leaned in against him and closed her eyes. "...We don't get too many storms at home. But when they happened, Miralin would always be there. He would help calm me down, comfort me." She sighed softly. He was so warm. She could still smell the orange-scented soap he'd used that morning. She closed her eyes.
Saelhil nodded in reply, understanding. They didn't have many thunderstorms in his village, either, but he had always loved rain anyways, so he had to see it from her point of view. His hand over her shoulder quietly fiddled with her hair, running his thumb over the silky bumps in her braid. {I'm pretty sure she braided her hair that morning...}
(Sorry! Power is out. I'm at a friend's for the evening so I'll be able to post until I leave, which shouldn't be for a few hours. And yes, she braided her hair )
Raeliel stayed quiet, resting against him. She could feel him playing with her hair, and it was rather comforting. She looked up, opening her eyes to look at him. She stared up at him for a long few moments, then pulled back a little and lifted her head from his shoulders. Then, she slowly leaned in towards him. A kiss. But she purposely paused, their lips just barely apart, to see if he would finish it or if she may just be foolish in trying to kiss him.

{No prob!}
Saelhil knew she was watching him, but had said nothing, just stared into the fire. But when she moved, and made to kiss him... He felt a bit of a shiver run down his spine. Slowly, he made the connection and pressed his lips to hers, just as a flash of lightning lit up the room for a half-moment.

Raeliel did not jump at the lightning or pull away. No, she was kissing him. She couldn't believe it, but she was kissing him. And it was amazing. Ten times better than the kiss at their wedding ceremony. She had never had such a kiss before. After a little bit she would pull back slowly from the kiss, her cheeks flushed. Well. That happened.
Saelhil could feel his heart pounding in his chest as she pulled away, and he could feel the heat radiating from his own face. Could she hear his heart or feel the heat as well? He had never honestly kissed someone before--not even Mirwen--and it was a rather... new experience. He didn't know what to say. What could he say after that?! Was it better just to smile, or to perhaps kiss her forehead? Or should he try to kiss her again, or just look away? He honestly couldn't come up with anything to say about it, so that was out of the question. He ended up simply kissing her forehead with a gentle smile and pulling her closer, hoping to show her--without words--that he enjoyed it and was fine with being close to her. Was that sending the right message?
Raeliel blushed even brighter when he kissed her forehead. The entire time he had been contemplating what to do, she had been wondering the same thing. She snuggled up against him as he pulled her closer and closed her eyes. Well. Now she absolutely had no idea about anything. She was supposed to not like him. But she knew that wouldn't last. And now, it seemed the time for hating him was far past. Raeliel just stayed quiet and watched the fire. She'd probably fall asleep soon, if they both stayed so quiet.
Saelhil eventually fell asleep, with her warmth pressed against him. The thunder had stopped, leaving just the rain pounding on the roof and the windows. The sea below was raging, but they were safe, and warm.
Raeliel fell asleep as well. By morning, they'd find themselves laying down and cuddled up, with the fire being merely embers now. She stirred, feeling his warm body against her. Her eyes opened, slowly. She stared at him, stared at his face, and leaned in. But before she kissed him this time, she did stop. She just closed her eyes and cuddled into him a little, then slowly pulled away. They'd fallen asleep in her clothes. She got up carefully and stretched, giving a soft sigh.
Saelhil felt her move, and shifted. He slowly took a deep breath as he woke up, and he remembered the night before. A brief smile flickered sleepily over his face, and he sighed. "Good morning," he murmured quietly, opening his eyes to watch her.
Raeliel glanced over to him. "Good morning." She started to unbraid her hair, letting it hang loose. "I'm going to go get changed." She went up to their room and got dressed in fresh clothes, then brushed through her hair. She washed her face, then came down to prepare some breakfast. She took a glance out the window and smiled. The ground was wet, but the sun was shining.
Once Raeliel was in the kitchen, Saelhil went upstairs and cleaned himself up, taking a quick bath and changing into fresh clothes. All the while, his mind lingered on the night before, on their kiss. Something in the back of his mind made him believe she had only kissed him because Melathin kissed her when she was afraid. But that couldn't be true... right?
