Raeliel blushed. She looked down at her toast, suddenly not quite hungry at the moment. "...conflicted." She took in a deep breath and let it out. "I don't know. I was raised....well, you probably know. I was raised with the knowledge that I had to give my husband a child as soon as possible or else I was worthless as a wife." She ran a hand through her hair. "I think I'm just trying to rebel. And...I mean...we haven't even..." She blushed a bit brighter and rubbed the back of her neck a bit. "...I don't know."
Saelhil nodded slightly. "It's fine; this isn't really the time to talk about it, anyways. I was just wondering," he said quietly, taking another sip of his drink. "I think I want children... But not just yet. Especially with the situation our village may be in." Our village. Not the village. not his village. Our village. Finally, he included her in his thinking of his home.
Raeliel ate her toast, nibbling at it slowly, because this topic had taken some of her appetite. It was an awkward topic, she could never get out how she felt about it. After being talked to about it for her whole life, she didn't want to talk about it with Saelhil. She wanted life to just happen, not plan everything out like her life had been before she met him. "Yeah. When do you think we'll get word back?"
"Hopefully as early as this evening," Saelhil said with a little nod. "Father will send for me when it arrives, but I'm going to ask you to come as well, if you want. You should know what's going on... It's terrible getting information second-hand."
Raeliel listened to him and sighed. This evening was so far off. What were they supposed to do until then with everything as tense as it was? "Yes...I'd like to come. Thank you." She also hoped that her ideas wouldn't be needed, but if they were, then it would be good for her to be there and give them directly to Saelhil's father himself.
Saelhil nodded. Indeed, that evening was many long hours away, but they would have to find something to pass the time until word arrived. He swirled his drink around in his cup. "Most of the men will go to battle, should it be needed," he said quietly. "Some of the women will choose to go, as well. My only fear is for those too young to fight... They won't realise how dangerous it is, and try to come along. My father said that when he was younger, two brothers Talainna's age managed to sneak along to battle against some of the villages from the south. They were found by southern spies and taken captive." He was only telling her this because he was worried about his sister--his beautiful, happy, innocent sister--trying to come along, should he or his father have to fight.
Raeliel listened to him, getting rather serious. Serious, and...upset. So that was it. 'Stay home with the kids and make sure they are safe'. An important job, to be sure, but one that pained her because it meant that she would be unable to be by Saelhil's side. She looked down at the table. "...I'll make sure everyone's alright." she said quietly. She didn't look up at him, because then he would see how upset she was that she wasn't able to be by his side if it came to war.
When Saelhil heard her words, and saw her countenance, he felt his chest tightened nervously. "...you want to fight..." The words were quiet, coming from a worried face. He had nearly lost her to a river; that would be devasting enough. But to lose her to a human blade? Or worse, lose her as a captive to those humans? He knew what they would do with a beautiful elf... He felt like murdering someone at the thought. But who was he to keep her from fighting for their village, their people?
Raeliel stood up suddenly. "I don't want to talk about it anymore." She took their dishes and went to go wash them up. Why did she do this? Every time. She pulled herself away from him. Avoided it. She sighed and put the dishes away. How was she supposed to confront him about this? She knew he would let her do it, if he knew that she wanted to be by his side during battle. But she knew it would kill him inside. Sacrifice was needed sometimes...but Saelhil was so vehement about letting her do what she wanted, about not forcing her into anything. Raeliel shook herself out of her thoughts and went upstairs. A bath was needed.
Saelhil stood to follow, but he decided against it. She couldn't be talked to when she suddenly felt conflicted about something; it was just the way she was raised, he supposed. And so he stayed there for a while to let her get her thoughts collected so she could say what she needed to say to him.
{Dinner, brb!}
{Dinner, brb!}
Raeliel bathed, dressed, and fussed about her hair for a little. There was nothing much she could do with it. Short and pathetic as it was. She sighed and eventually gave up, coming back downstairs. She really didn't want to talk to Saelhil about it. She already said she wold keep the kids safe, no matter what she wanted.
Saelhil had ending up going into the sitting room, looking out the window to watch the street from inside. The villagers went on with their daily lives as usual, not worried about anything. But there he was, anxious about what was to come, and Raeliel feeling the need to fight. He looked lost in thought, even though he was watching people walk by.
Raeliel came into the room, spotting him there. She leaned against the doorway and watched him. She couldn't help but admire him. Everything about him. She sighed, and walked over to sit down beside him. "So...what are we going to do today?" She wasn't going to bring up the thing about fighting or staying home. Not happening.
"Whatever you want to do," Saelhil said, continuing to watch the window fora few moments before looking at her. "We could try leaf-walking again, if your ribs are up to it."
Raeliel touched her ribs gently, testing them. She could only imagine what might happen if she fell again, and the thought made her quickly shake her head. "I don't want to risk anything yet. Not until we know what's going on." If she broke something before the big battle, before everyone needed her help, then she wouldn't be able to handle it. "..What can we do that probably won't injure us?"
Saelhil couldn't help but laugh at her question. Everything lately seemed to get at least one of them hurt. "Let's see... Sitting still is a good option, but very boring. We could just go for a normal walk and hope we don't get ambushed by orcs or something." He smiled teasingly at her.
Raeliel had to laugh at what he said. "Yeah...a normal walk. Is anything normal with us?" She smiled a little at him. "...I want to dance." she said suddenly, looking out the window. "...let's have a dance tonight. Sure it's spur of the moment, but if everyone brings something to eat, we'll have a dance and some food. I...I think it would be good. You know? Ease the tension. What do you think, Saelhil?"
Saelhil chuckled. At her suggestion of a dance, he smiled. "Ah, now you're getting in the right mindset! I think that's a wonderful idea. We'll walk around town for a bit, and tell people about the dance tonight. It will be a celebration for peace should there be no war, or an assurance of victory otherwise." He took her hand and stood, pulling her up with him. He kissed her for a few moments, then smiled cheerfully. "Shall we be going then, m'lady?" He offered his arm to her.
Raeliel was glad he liked her idea! She stood up with him, smiling as she was pulled into that kiss. It was a kiss she quite willingly returned, and then when he spoke of leaving, she nodded and took his arm. "Yes, let's! It will be great, Saelhil. Just what everyone needs." She walked along with him, quite eager to spread the word about the dance and get everything together.
Saelhil was very pleased, and so he walked around cheerfully with Raeliel. Everyone who would stop to talk to them was told of the dance, and told to spread the word to everyone. And soon everyone was talking excitedly about what was to come that evening.
