(Back!)
Raeliel looked around carefully. She had the dagger on her that had been hidden in the house, just for safety...so she woke someone and had them keep watch, then went to pick up the roll of bandages and carefully, sneakily follow whatever trail she could find in the direction that the bandages had been dropped.
Raeliel looked around carefully. She had the dagger on her that had been hidden in the house, just for safety...so she woke someone and had them keep watch, then went to pick up the roll of bandages and carefully, sneakily follow whatever trail she could find in the direction that the bandages had been dropped.
If Raeliel could see where foot steps shuffled along in the dropped leaves, where sticks had been broken, she could follow the trail easily. If she couldn't, there was small dropped items every-so-often. Obviously, whoever had taken them had been in a hurry to get away.
Raeliel couldn't follow a trail too well, but well enough to notice where the person was heading. She pulled her dagger out, keeping it in the sleeve of her shirt, creeping carefully along and staying in the shadows.
After a while, she would come along a small grotto, where a young boy sat against a tree. He was hungrily devouring bread, reaching for another roll from a small bag at his side. Strangely, his race was not easily identified, as he had the ears of an elf but the build of a human. He seemed rather alone, and rather dirty and a bit wounded, though a large cut on his leg was sloppily wrapped in a bandage.
Raeliel saw his ears, and his build. She was wary; he might have been fighting in the war. So, she stepped out in the open. "It's not right to steal things, you know." She didn't reveal the blade, wanting to keep her ace in the hole. "You could have woken one of us up and asked, you know. And you shouldn't wrap it like that, that isn't going to stop the bleeding at all." She walked over to him and knelt down carefully.
The boy jumped at the voice. He grabbed the bag and quickly scrambled up, moving away. "W-Who are you!?" he asked, voice cracking slightly. He looked at Raeliel with wide, dark eyes. He produced his own dagger, gripping it tightly. The dagger appeared human-made... Was he stealing things from both elves and humans?
Raeliel lifted a brow. "...you think you could fight me in your condition? I'm the one you stole from, boy. You'd be better off just sitting down and letting me help you." She took a few swift steps and yanked the dagger from his hand before he would even have the chance to blink. "Now sit down before you bleed to death."
The boy stumbled back some more, eyes growing wider. "You're from the village!" he exclaimed, then he grimaced when his leg stung. He glanced around warily, and made a slight whimpering sound, before looking at Raeliel... well, in her general direction. "W-Why would you help me? I stole from you..."
Raeliel was tired of the games. She needed to get back and make sure the others were safe. "You're a child, and you're hurt. I'm not going to let you bleed to death." she picked up the things he'd taken and shoved them into his arms. "Hold these." Then she lifted him up herself, despite any protests he might give, and carried him back to the safe house. Once there, she set him down inside, instructed the supplies to be closely guard from now on, and then went about properly washing and bandaging his leg. "What happened?"
The boy protested at first, but he stilled, just staring at the ground as he was carried. He seemed very nervous, but he didn't say anything until she set him down and asked him a question. He didn't answer for a few moments, shifting slightly. He reached up and touched the tip of his ear, then gulped. "I... I got lost," he said simply, in a wavering voice. He kept looking around, never focusing on one thing.
Raeliel took hold of his chin, gently but firmly, to make him look at her. "What happened?" she asked again. "You don't get a wound like this from getting lost. Tell me what happened." She took a piece of bread and held it out for him. "Tell me, and you can have something to eat."
The boy didn't take the bread, although his stomach growled loudly. "I fell," he told her quietly. "I heard the dogs released and I tried to climb a tree, but I fell and cut myself."
Raeliel set the bread in his lap. It was plausible, except for one thing. "What dogs?" She didn't know there were any dogs around. She looked at him, looking over him carefully. He needed a bath, and a meal. "Can you walk?" She pointed to his injured leg, which was now properly cleaned and bandaged.
The boy quickly grabbed the bread, and ate it hurriedly, taking a bit of time before answering. "The--....The humans' hunting dogs." He gulped down the bread. "I've been walking for two days. I can walk fine."
Raeliel was quite interested. He referred to the people as 'humans'. That was a hint. But his build, certainly not elven. She held out a piece of fruit this time, probably much more appealing to him. But she wouldn't let him have it until he answered. "What are you?" She looked at him calmly. "Answer honestly. You're going to get a bath and be fed, and your answer isn't going to change that at all, alright? We probably even have some extra clothes you can wear."
The boy watched her face, never looking at the piece of fruit. He didn't answer for a while, and he glanced briefly away. "Half-elf," the boy told her reluctantly, shifting a bit.
Raeliel stared. This couldn't be the boy Saelhil had talking about, she had inferred that he was much older. But...perhaps it was. Even if it wasn't, though, she was shocked. She handed the fruit over to him. "...where are your parents?" she asked quietly. She asked one of the kids to go get a bath ready and some new clothes, then looked back to the boy. "..What is your name?"
"How should I know?" the boy asked rather bitterly, biting into the fruit. He wiped his chin of the juice from the fruit. "Which one?" He took a breath. "Everyone calls me Edmund, but my mom called me Valenthion."
Raeliel frowned a little. "...did they leave you?" She watched him. "Valenthion, that's a wonderful name. Your mother was elvish, then? Who was your father?" A human obviously, but she wondered what had happened. Had it been love? Or had it been...something unpleasant? The one child came back to tell her the bath was ready. "Alright, let's get you cleaned up." she led him to the bathroom and gave him privacy to wash and get dressed, waiting outside the door. There was no way to escape from the bathroom except for that door so she knew he wouldn't try to run.
