Raeliel listened to him, smiling. "Amazing. I knew that would catch them by surprise!" She was so pleased to hear him talk of the battle. When he spoke of her being there to see it, she shrugged. "If I'd been there, Valenthion might be dead right now from loss of blood. His bandaging was bad, he never would have made it. And if someone else found him, they might not have been so kind." She looked at Saelhil. "...I know he doesn't want to stay, but I can't let him go with all the danger around us. He'd be killed in a heart-beat, by either side."
Saelhil chuckled, glad she was pleased with her plans. But when she talked of Valenthion, he became a bit more serious and listened. "How did he even get here?" he asked quietly, holding her hand while he ate. "Where are his parents?"
Raeliel sighed. "...He's been on his own for a while. He says the war has been coming this way. His mother was an elf, and she was killed because she lived in a human village. His father moved to a different place and kicked him out. He's....thirty-seven, I think. Human years. He was stealing supplies because a human's dogs went after him and hurt him."
"He doesn't have a family?" Saelhil suddenly looked very sad. "Poor kid... Thirty-seven? I think that's about Talainna's age. I can't believe he's on his own so young..." He glanced to the stairs where Talainna had taken Valenthion. "A blind half-elf... It's a wonder he's made it this far on his own."
Raeliel shook her head. "No family." She sighed. "I know. He's going to want to leave as soon as he can, but...I can't let him go, Saelhil. I can't. We spoke of what kind of a life a kid like that would live. I..." She looked at him for a few long moments. "I know it sounds ridiculous, but...I want to adopt him." Well. That was a surprise, especially coming from a girl who didn't even really want to discuss having children!
"Adopt him...?" Saelhil studied her. "From what I've seen, he's been a bit... humanized. How could he fit in here? I wouldn't want him to be made fun of..."
Raeliel gave him a look, with a lifted brow. "Would people really make fun of the chieftan's son, or grandson? Adopted or not, that would still make him your son, Saelhil. And depending when you take your father's title, I'm not so sure any of the kids would be stupid enough to pick on him. Did anyone ever pick on Talainna?" She was curious. In her town, nobody dared to pick on her as a child. In fact, she hardly had any friends during childhood.
"No, of course not, but she's full elf." Saelhil sighed. "It's just... How could you make this decision so quickly?" He couldn't help but consider it, though. Who was he to turn away a child that was part elf? It wasn't like Raeliel to rush in so quickly, though.
Raeliel bit her lip slightly. Did he not like it? "What else are we supposed to do, Saelhil? Toss him out in the rain like a three-legged puppy and just let him die?! It's amazing he's lasted this far, but he's not going to last forever, especially during and after this war! His mother was killed, his father left him!" She took in a sharp breath and looked away. "I know what it's like to be betrayed. A kid like him shouldn't have to go through that."
Saelhil squeezed her hand. "I know, Raeliel. I know. But I'm tired, Raeliel. Let me think about this before we decide anything, alright?" He sighed and turned her back towards him so he could kiss her forehead.
Raeliel sighed softly. "...you're right. This is way too much to talk about with you having just come back from battle." She kissed him gently and got up. "You should get some rest." She kissed his forehead as well, then brought him over to bed so he could sleep.
"Thank you." Saelhil kissed her before laying down. "Can you stay with me, or do you have other things to do?" he asked softly, glad to be back in his own bed.
Raeliel looked at him for a few moments. "I'll stay until you fall asleep. I have things to take care of but it's not immediately important." She smiled at him and sat down, putting her hand on his. "I'm so glad that I can be with you again."
"I missed you," Saelhil said quietly, smiling sleepily at her. He squeezed her hand and closed his eyes, falling asleep rather quickly due to exhaustion.
Raeliel held his hand, watching him fall asleep. "I love you." she whispered. She left him once he was asleep, going to take care of her other duties. She was quite happy. Saelhil was back, and he was not too harmed.
After a little while, Talainna led Valenthion downstairs by the hand. The boy still looked half-asleep, but because he was so asleep he didn't protest as he was pulled around. Talainna pulled him over to Raeliel, smiling up at her. "Valen is staying here, isn't he, Rae?" she asked, holding his hand tightly. Valenthion sleepily rubbed his eyes, and yawned. "He keeps saying he isn't."
Raeliel looked over to Talainna. "Valenthion is staying here until the war is over. You shouldn't cling to him, Talainna, it's not nice. Now be quiet, others are sleeping." She sighed softly and smiled, watching Valenthion. "Did you sleep well? Talainna didn't wake you, did she?"
"But he's an elf... I'm trying to get him to act like one." Talainna pouted and didn't let go of him.
"I'm only half-elf," Valenthion muttered, then he glanced to Raeliel's voice. "It was fine. I woke up because the person in the room next to me was snoring." He scratched his ear for a moment.

Raeliel frowned slightly. "Talainna. Let go of him." She used a firm voice this time. Then she looked over to Valenthion. "Ahh...unfortunately, I can't do anything about snoring." She chuckled softly. "..do you need anything, Valenthion?" She smiled gently even though he couldn't see it.
Talainna looked at Raeliel, then sighed and reluctantly let go. Valenthion, cracked his knuckles slightly. "No," he said plainly, stuffing his hands into his pockets. He wasn't a very happy child, was he?
