After making sure that Valenthion didn't need any of it cut off to make it more suitable, she would sit down and smile softly. "How's that? Do you need anything else?" She glanced at Saelhil. "Saelhil and I were thinking of seeing about getting you a hawk sometime, one of those that are trained to help people like you." She smiled. "What do you think? If you're interested, we could look into it. It might help you while you're around here." She had no idea of Saelhil and Valenthion's heart-to-heart.
"No, it seems fine." Valenthion gripped it in both hands again, feeling the smooth wood under his palms. He looked a bit surprised at her offer. "Like... A seeing-eye-hawk?" he questioned.
"Mm, exactly," Saelhil said with a nod. "It would be a few days travel up north and back, but I think it would be worth the wait."
Valenthion gripped his staff a bit tighter, glancing down. "....yeah, I'd like that. Thanks."
"Mm, exactly," Saelhil said with a nod. "It would be a few days travel up north and back, but I think it would be worth the wait."
Valenthion gripped his staff a bit tighter, glancing down. "....yeah, I'd like that. Thanks."
Raeliel smiled at Saelhil. "It was all Saelhil's idea. We'll see what we can do about sending word up." It would be hard during the war, but that didn't matter. She would do it, risk it, to get Valenthion that hawk. She wrapped her arms around Saelhil and nuzzled against him. "Well, we've taken up enough of your time." She chuckled. "If you need anything, just let me know. Otherwise, go ahead and do whatever you'd like. Just try to stay indoors, it's not safe outside yet."
Valenthion's eyes searched them blindly, trying so hard to make them out in the darkness of his world. But he gave up and nodded. "...thanks..." He backed up slightly and went off, lightly tapping his staff of things in his way, moving much more courageously than before.
Saelhil watched him go, smiling a bit. He leaned over and kissed Raeliel. "Things seem to be going better this morning," he noted.
Saelhil watched him go, smiling a bit. He leaned over and kissed Raeliel. "Things seem to be going better this morning," he noted.
Raeliel looked over at Saelhil and kissed him back. "Yeah, seems like. I think he's adjusting pretty well so far. It's still just the beginning, but still." She shrugged and then smiled. "Need anything, love?"
"I would very much like something to do," Saelhil said, chuckling. "I feel useless just sleeping all day. Let's get some chores done." He took her hand and squeezed it, smiling at her.
Raeliel chuckled and nodded. "Alright. Let's go, then." She stood up and walked around with him, taking care of things. There was always something to do, to make sure everything was prepared and everyone served.
It was a fairly boring day, with nothing big happening. At the end of the day, Saelhil got a map and spread it out on the table in the room he and Raeliel were sharing. He was trying to find the quickest, safest way through the mountains so they could get the hawk for Valenthion.
Raeliel had other duties, but when she came back, she found Saelhil pouring over a map. "What are you doing?" Surely he wasn't thinking about going back into battle already! She shook her head a bit. No, that certainly wouldn't do. She walked over and looked at the map carefully.
"Hm?" Saelhil glanced up. "Oh. Just trying to see if there's a safe path north." He gestured to the map, then tapped his finger on a dot in the mountains. "That's where the hawks are bred," he told her. "They have an innate sense to guide their master, whether they are handicapped or not. If we could get an egg and bring it back, perhaps Valenthion could form a stronger relationship with it... And of course we could train it for his specific needs." He sighed. But if only we could get there... he thought miserably.
Raeliel nodded, watching the map carefully. "Yes..." She brushed her fingers along an area. "But this is where the humans have their army, isn't it? Would it be possible to leaf-walk through there unnoticed if it was just one?"
"Leaf-walk?" Saelhil looked at her. "It would take the quickest leaf-walker at least three days to make it out of the forest on foot, and even then it would be at least two days to get to the mountains, and to traverse the mountains on foot...? It would be too dangerous."
Raeliel frowned a bit. "Can't be that bad." she mumbled. She studied the map carefully. "What about sending a message by bird?" She watched for a few moments, then looked at him. "There was to be something, Saelhil. Surely."
Saelhil ran his hand back through his short hair, sighing. After a few moments, he grazed his fingers to the west. "...we could go inland, on horseback. Around the army. Or we could cut straight through, though it would be dangerous." He sighed once more, trying to think. "My father's sent out all our messenger birds to warn the other villages." He studied the map, then hit the side of his fist down on the table. "There has to be a way to get there and back quickly and safely! Those humans can't cover the entire terrain. What am I missing?"
Raeliel reached over and took his hand, holding it gently. "Saelhil. Saelhil, calm down. It's not that bad. If we can't make it right now, then we'll just wait." She held his hand that had hit the table, rubbing it gently. "...neither of us can go, you know. We'll have to send someone else. The best way would probably be inland. Safest. We could send one of the elderly." Too old to fight, but not too old to be decrepit. The kids were too young, but the elders would know how to deal with the weather and terrain.
Saelhil shook his head slightly and stood up. "We can't let someone else travel so far just to get an egg," he said quietly. He paused. "If they could return with a few hawks, perhaps, we could use them to fight, but is it really worth the travelling?" He glanced at the map. "The inland route goes through some other elven villages, so it would be safest, but it would take longer." He sighed, trying to make up his mind. "...if someone is willing to go, let them go inland to get there."
Raeliel was determined not to let him go. Not a chance was he going in his condition. "I'll ask around. We could get a few, like you said, maybe they could be extra messenger birds, or hunting birds." She kissed his cheek. "Just...put the map away for now. Relax, okay? Rest. You are pushing yourself too much."
Saelhil sighed heavily. "I'm fine, Raeliel. I'm fine." However, he did roll up the map and tuck it away, though a bit reluctantly.
Raeliel frowned. "You aren't fine, Saelhil, you just hit the table!" She didn't want him thinking that was a basis for 'fine'. She sighed. "Come on. Why don't we take a step outside, see how things are like? I haven't heard anything from the look-out so it should be safe to just step outside for a moment."
Saelhil took a breath, and nodded slightly. "Mm," was all he replied. He was just stressed at the moment, mostly because he was worried about those still fighting against the humans. He wanted to go back, to be able to defend his village... But he was here with Raeliel, and that was just as good.
