Raeliel smiled. "Great. We're seeing what we can do about getting you a seeing-eye hawk, but it might be a while, so just let me know if you need anything else to help you along in the meantime." She watched him for a moment, then turned. "Well, I'll let you get back to your exploring. Don't go outside the village though, okay? Have fun!"
"Uh, yeah. Thanks." Valenthion tightened his grip on his staff before backing up. He hesitated, then walked back down the steps quietly. Again, strange. She had only known him for two days, and she was acting more clingy than his mother.
Raeliel left him alone, and went back to work, making sure everything was going well. When she got back to Saelhil, she checked in to make sure that everything was alright. She was worried about how stressed he was lately.
Saelhil had ended up sitting in a vacant room, children gathered around, while he played the elvish version of a lute. They were playing a sort of game, where Saelhil would play a random tune, and the children would make up words to go along. Currently they were singing about something to do with a blue pig being stuck in a tree.
Raeliel smiled and leaned against the doorway, watching them as they all played this game. She chuckled softly. He was so good with kids. Why was he so nervous to be a father? It didn't make sense, but it must just be part of why she is also scared to be a mother. She didn't say anything for now, letting them have their fun.
Saelhil laughed as they finished their song. He was about to start a new one, but he saw Raeliel. "Ah, Rae. Come on in." He smiled at her, strumming a few chords on the lute. All of the kids chorused greetings to Raeliel, each with a smile on their face.
Raeliel smiled and waved at them. "Hi, guys. Sorry, didn't mean to interrupt." She walked over and sat down by Saelhil. "Please, continue." She leaned against him a little, but not enough to hinder his playing.
Saelhil continued strumming. "Alright... Let's sing one everyone knows." He strummed a key change and then began playing a folk song, which was familiar to almost all elves. He let the kids begin singing, though he himself remained quiet, just enjoying hearing them enjoy themselves.
Raeliel listened to the kids sing, and she chimed in occasionally. And then she felt something. Saelhil would feel it too. Something was...wrong. Something was pulling her to the sacred garden where she had gone with Saelhil when they planted their flowers. Raeliel was running before she knew it, grabbing a dagger on her way out. Someone was there. She could feel it, an intruder in the peace. Raeliel was scared. Were the flowers a representation of an elf's life, or were they connected? What happened to an elf if a flower was crushed?
Saelhil dropped the lute and dashed after her. It was a sickening feeling, that made him feel almost ill with worry. What was wrong? He didn't know, but he knew that they had to get there and protect the flowers. He never fully understood the flowers, so he didn't know what would happen if one was destroyed. He knew his mother's had died when she had, but what about vise versa? He led Raeliel to the sacred place, unsure of what was going on.
They burst into the sacred garden, and there they were; a small troop of humans, maybe five or six. Armed. Raeliel let out a cry and dashed forward, wielding the dagger. "Get out!!" She dashed over to the nearest human and sank the dagger between the plates of armor, pulling it out and kicking him back violently. She was filled with a rage that she'd never had before. The garden was crying out to her, desiring the protection. "Keep the flowers safe!" she called to Saelhil, since he couldn't fight very well being injured.
Saelhil at first was shocked at first at her, but he quickly shook his head and began sort of rounding up the humans, throwing quick punches before they could get at him with their swords. It was hard to keep them off the path, off the flowers, but he tried to do it anyways. How had they even found this place, and why were they here?! He with filled with anger, though, and protected the flowers as best he could.
Raeliel fought bravely against the humans, and managed to kill them. Actually kill them, each and every one. But she wasn't without her own injuries. In fact, she was badly hurt, and the moment the last human fell, so did she. A few elves burst onto the scene, some who had been tracking that group of humans. Well, help had arrived, but a bit too late.
"Raeliel!" Saelhil yelled, seeing her drop. He looked at the elves. "Go back to the village and get a medic ready," he commanded, immediately going to pick up Raeliel, ignoring the pain in his leg. He began to carry her back to the village, holding her close. "Rae? Can you hear me?" he asked softly, watching her face as he walked quickly, the other elves heading at a fast pace for the village. They would have to clear out the human bodies later.
Rae stirred slightly. "Sael...flowers..?" She winced from the pain. She was losing a lot of blood. The medic went to take care of her immediately. Two broken ribs, a sprained wrist, and multiple lacerations from the human swords. And then the worst news of all. Poison. Somewhere in the chaos, a poison-laced dagger had hit her. The poison was already spreading through her body.
"The flowers are all fine." Saelhil kissed her forehead. "You were absolutely amazing. I love you so much." The medic made Saelhil get out of the way as he examined and cleaned up Raeliel. Saelhil was a nervous wreck, nearly on the verge of tears. He should have been by her side, protecting her, but he was injured and would have just gotten in her way. So now he would have to wait and see if the poison was lethal to elves, and if they had a cure.
The medic believed that the spring waters might cleanse her of the poison. But there was just one problem; there was an army of humans in the way. Raeliel opened her eyes, to try and see Saelhil. "..hey. What's...that face for..?" She reached up to touch his cheek. It hurt to move at all, it hurt to speak, but she didn't tell him that.
Saelhil put his hand over hers, shutting his eyes tightly. He couldn't help a few tears roll down his cheeks, but he quickly wiped his eyes and watched her. "Nothing... I'm just going to miss your cooking until you get better." His smile was rather pathetic, but he really was trying his best. He had already decided that he would sneak around the humans and get the spring water. He would be the one to save Raeliel; he didn't trust anyone else with her life.
Raeliel chuckled, though a look of pain flashed across her face. Broken ribs, ow. "How did...you ever survive...without me?" She smiled a little, but pain rolled through her and she shut her eyes tightly. "S-sheesh...it...it hurts...having...stuff broken..." She stopped talking. It hurt too much to say anything. She closed her eyes and just tried to relax, but she rubbed her fingers through his hair clumsily before laying her hand back down, to prove to him that she was still okay. She was just weak, in pain. And now this poison was going through her, keeping her from healing. "Vale...Valen is...outside..." She winced. She needed them to get everyone inside, to be safe. Valenthion was outside, he had to get in to safety!
"I know, I know..." Saelhil kissed her forehead gently. "I'll make sure everyone is inside and safe. I want you to try and rest, okay? The medic will be right here if you need anything. You're going to be fine." He now kissed her hand, reluctantly stepping away. "I love you, Raeliel. I'll be back." He smiled gently at her, then went outside, sending Valenthion inside before gearing up to set out. He wore dark clothes and had his bow and took along a dagger just in case. He made sure his leg was wrapped tightly enough so that he could move without too much pain. And so he set out on a horse, heading for the camp, moving as silently as he could, keeping his eyes out for signs of human scouts.
