Hey there, guys! It's 83 days until Towel Day, so I thought that I would do a thread.
If you don't know what towel day is, go ahead and read the explanation here! Or you can just go play word chain below. If you already know what it is, feel free to not read the explanation here! Whatever!
So, Towel Day is a sort of fan celebration commemorating the life and times and works of Douglas Adams, fantasy and sci-fi and goofy weirdness author. He's mostly known for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, and the Dirk Gently series. He was also a wildlife activist and preservation advocate.
He was born on March 11, 1952, and died May 11, 2001. His anguished fan-base commemorated his death by organizing an event, wherein they would all display towels as signs of their affection and remembrance of him, a couple of weeks later. This was May 25, 2001, and it was the first Towel Day. It became a tradition to be celebrated, and it had a website which was shut down but also subsequently revived, and you can find that website here>> http://www.towelday.org <<. The website explains all sorts of things, so you can probably go there if you want further information.
You're probably wondering why this is in the games forum. We'll get there. Hang on, okay?
Now, you see, the Hitchhiker's Guide series, also affectionately called h2g2, was originally a radio broadcast show before it was your favorite 5-book trilogy. That's right. And it was on BBC Radio.
This year just so happens to be the 42nd year since the radio show of h2g2 first broadcast, so if you want to celebrate this important number in a froody way, you can go ahead and... Celebrate towel day this year, I guess.
Anyway, on to the gaming part of this! I actually won't be hosting a prize-reward game just yet- this is more of an advancely timed thread, so I can sort of announce and keep track and get this on the radar, so to speak, and also so that I can contact the Towel Day website people and stuff and not go forgetting about it. Hahahaha. Ha.
However, for a non-prize-winning sort of game, we can play sci-fi and fantasy word chain! Woohoo! Use the last letter of the word someone says, and say a new word that begins with that letter.
Like if I were to say "Space", then you could say "Eclipse", for instance.
Then again, you can also do a reverse style one, where you use the first letter they said, and end your word with it! Like if I were to say "Slime-Cube", then you could say "Dragons"!
That sort of thing. Have fun!
So as for the H2G2 thing, for now I'll just be posting every now and then, sci-fi stuff and fun stuff and things you can do with a towel. Maybe. There are a lot of things you can do with a towel, I guess.
But when Towel Day does come along, I'll be hosting a game here! Or at least a rolly dice sort of thing. I hope nobody minds too much if I don't list the prizes right now. The game isn't active yet anyway, so I think that should be fine. But it'll be cool when it does come along!
Be seein' ya! Metaphorically, at least!
Byeeeee!
Oh, uh, Orcs. That's my word for the game to start with.
Have some... Alien ASMR.
