It is certainly possible to do a more tabletop type style here, although for more involved games with maps and stuff, folks often rely on 3rd party sites like Roll20. One I was in used that for battle mapping, and everything else was done here - narration, most dice rolls, our character sheets. Fun times.
Have you done play-by-post before? That's the sort most common here. It can be as freeform or as regimented as the players feel like making it.
