Horizon labs is a researching endeavor to develop the most advanced AI. Sadly, there are some things going mad and illegal at their main facility. The chairman and three other researchers are downloading conectomes of dead people into their most evolved prototypes. This information has leaked and the investors are not satisfied with what's going on at Horizon Labs underground facilities.
Horizon Labs' chairman knows that a good soldier needs to love the army but that a good general has to be ready to destroy that what he loves the most. He then schedules the labs' most advanced prototypes for destruction, he didn't get to be the most predominant figure when it comes to cybertronics just to wind up sitting in jail for the rest of his life.

Far future, perhaps galactic teleporters and fast terraforming
Combat is woven into the storyline and could come to the forefront if the characters seek it out.
Romance is slightly desired, but the overall plot is more important.
