“I hate that we live on a reef but can’t see out fresh water kind or meet humans...” A pretty mer-girl complained. She had darkish skin and spiky white hair with black points. Her scales and fins have the same pattern and are also pointy.
“It’s against the chief’s rules. We can only associate with our deep sea kin and other mers that life on the edge of the reef.” A light skinned male with a face full of cute freckles. He has curly blond hair and profit orange eyes. His scales are mostly pink with bits gradating orange.
“Well that’s okay. I was thinking, it wouldn’t hurt to have a little peek closer to the surface would it?” The last one. Another male with turquoise hair and scales that were the colors of the rainbow. His skin was semi dark and clear of scars or other faults.
Briny, the pink one, looked up from the clam he was picking at with a face full of disbelief. “No way!”
Nerida, the female, became exited and her expression lit up like a sea lantern. “That’d be so fun! And if you’re gonna be like that then you don’t have to come Mr. Salty,” she said sticking her tongue out to Briny.
Eddy, the rainbow, sat up from where he was laying on a large rock. “I can do it by myself. I’m just a bit curious. Plus, if all of us go we’ll surly be spotted. None of our tails exactly blend in with the ocean environment.”
“Exactly why you shouldn’t try that. Remember Aunt Ginny? Half of her scales were plucked of by humans!” Briny continued to argue.
“Oh hush. It’s just a tall tale to keep guppies from swimming to far into the reef or too near the surface,” Nerida chided. “You know what? Come on Eddy let’s go. Right now.” She grabbed Eddy’s arm and began dragging him upwards.
“W-wait we need a plan!” “Plans are for salt rocks like Briny.”
“Don’t blame me if you come back with no tails at all!” The male called from below.
Nerida led her friend up closer to the surface.
“It’s so much lighter up here,” Eddy commented.
“Yep! I’ve come up here before so now it’s your turn. Just watch out for- NETS!” Nerida took Eddy back down a few meters as a net was plunged into the water. A shadow had fallen over them as a ship rocked on the surface above. “Close one, hey what are you doing?!”
“The fish are trapped!” Eddy exclaimed determined to help them.
“Ed don’t,” Nerida cried not daring to swim closer. Eddy began trying to break the net apart with his hands.
“I got it!” He managed to get a single section of rope to break. Eddy held the home open so fish could swim through.
“Hang on a moment linger Neri. There’s one that won’t come out.”
“Don’t go into the net coral brain!”
Eddy did the opposite as told and managed to wiggle through the larger tear he’d made before reaching up to help a fish get free. On his way out the male became stuck. “Ack hang on I’ve it this!” His struggling only got him more tangled up. “Oh jeez...”

Olé. I’ve been meaning to sue des children for a while now. I had a bunch of merfolk ideas like a month ago and am gonna plan another book on it. So I thought. Mug He as well rp with them.
I’m not suuuper good at romance but I’ll take this chance to hone mah skills. I am a very slow person when it comes to this stuff, but I feel the whole situation will help me speed up a bit. Just a bit.

Magic is rare, but not unheard of. Mundane characters may or may not believe in it. Magical characters may form small and exclusive pockets for study, protection, etc.

Distant war may be part of the setting, but any scenes that happen to involve combat will likely be summarized, not played out in detail.
Romance will be a major feature of this plot.
