Cool. What about the flintlocks? I could play it as though they're unusual and rare, or write them out entirely and replace with a more conventional weapon like a hand crossbow or something similar.

As long as they're played true to flintlocks of that tech level, I don't have a problem with them. So, no auto-reloading flintlock repeater nonsense. Used in public they'll get the same sort of reaction from same-setting NPCs as his magic, though.
So I suppose what it comes down to is you'd have to play him more like an oldschool mage; saving spells and weapons for when they'll make the biggest difference to the party, rather than walking around with twelve different enchantments going off at all times like what tends to happen in modern video-game-derived fantasy settings.
