Rynnion (played by Morhe) Topic Starter

((( @ Ravavyre/Shion )))

The dwarf's face brightened momentarily; the half-elf was offering him coin for nearly a two week stay in the inn, just for telling her something he'd already told another customer for free. "Ah, th' tip isn't necessary, m'lady, unless yee insist... th' notice was placed by that dark elf there." He pointed to the table in the corner, with the gradually growing collection of patrons around it. "That's what I meant a bout th' work," he told the other woman. "Th' inn doesn't hire, but we let paying customers post fer hired hands. No charge for jess' speakin' with th' other patrons, o'course."

((( @ Steeve/Sarah ))

The drow held a hand out to one of the other empty seats, head bowing to the human woman. "Please do," she stated, before sinking back into the chair in a more relaxed, lounged position. "I'm a bounty hunter. I kill things for a living," she stated bluntly. "Recently I happened upon a particularly lucrative contract... the sort of pay with which one could buy this inn and half the town around it, and retire. There is a catch, of course. The target is not the usual brigand or or thief, but a creature... and one not of this world, to hear my benefactor tell it. The sort one might refer to as a monster, or even a demon. And because that was not problematic enough, the contract is valid only for a live capture."

She grimaced slightly, leaning her head to one side to rub at her temples with the thumb and index finger of one hand, the other lifting her mug to her lips to take a long pull of her cider before continuing. "One survives in this business by knowing when a task is beyond them, but this is one contract that I cannot ignore."
Steve Ruggles (played anonymously)

Stevie listened intently, looking toward the other woman with mild curiosity but leaving her to herself for now. At the moment, they both shared an interest in Rynnion's job and would likely remain quiet because of it. At least until it was time to speak again.

After the explanation ended, the Halfling canted her head. Although it sounded dangerous, there was a bit of relief to be felt by those who weren't entirely murderous like herself. Alive? Fantastic. "Sounds real tough," she finally commented. "But I'm willin' t'help ya out." She didn't want to tell the drow that it wasn't just for the money, that'd seem childish. Truthfully, she loved finding new places to see, new types of people to meet. Her excitement couldn't be contained, presented as a big goofy grin. "So do you really know what yer huntin' for?"
Tarsus Vervuek (played by Lolctopus)

From the upper floors came the dull 'thunk' of sturdily constructed riding boots on floorboards, growing closer and louder as their owner approached the staircase. In time, those paying attention would see exactly who those footfalls belonged too - a tall, lean human in a dark, knee length coat.

Barely an inch of his flesh was visible given his garments, face below the nose enclosed in the coat's long collar, eyes obscured by thick brass-framed eyepieces that tied around the back of his head with a leather strap. Their purpose was obscure. Protective? Corrective? Maybe just the cultural trappings of a foreigner, and the fellow was about as foreign as they came. He carried a cane, also brass and with a globe-shaped grip, though he didn't seem to have much real need to walk on it, carrying it like the gentlemen of certain countries did - as a fashion accessory and incidentally improvised weapon.

He'd been holed up in the inn for days at the direction of his Principals, his instructions frustratingly vague. The lot of it boiled down to Someone, somewhere around here, is hunting someone for something very dangerous. Find out who or what and make sure it doesn't all go to shit. For this, he was dispatched hundreds of miles to strange lands full of simple, superstitious people. A bit bitter, but hardly surprised; he'd been sent farther to look into cases with even less to go on. Such was the lot of a Doomwatcher. From what little he'd managed to suss out on his own in the intervening days however, it seemed as though his prescence might be warranted.

He strode over to the bar fairly close to the group and ordered a "Brandy, fruit", like the man behind the counter probably knew already. Brass shod gaze turned to scrutinize the group at the table. It took not an ounce of his peculiar abilities to figure this was the band he was looking for, just intuition and experience. A human, two drow, and a halfling all chatting around a table semi-conspiratorially? Only the promise of dangerous jobs and a quick turn of coin tended to bring groups that disparate together.

Before he'd gotten his brandy he turned to the group, and inquired with arms folded and cane tucked under his shoulder:

"So. I take it this is the hunting party? How much of the briefing have I missed?"
Sarah (played by Unicorn)

Sarah mused quietly to herself while the Drow stated she was a bounty hunter, the brunette had also played such a role in the past, though it had been mostly dealing with the usual thief or bandit. But she had acquaintances who held the same profession and knew from the stories they told and the scars they carried that it was a dangerous line of work. A brow perked at the mention of the target being a monster of some sort, the brunette knew plenty about demons and beasts of myth and folktale, along with those who actually existed. Not that anyone knew the extent of her knowledge but it was certain her curiosity was piqued. After Steve spoke, the Huntress also jumped in,

"What fine details can you provide? Appearance? Habits? Location? I have hunted many creatures and there is always a means to snare something, so long as you know what you're doing." Hunting and killing something was one task but taking a beast alive, that was even more of a challenge. And the idea of such a challenge was almost thrilling in the most sickening manner for the human female.

And then another stranger walked up to the table, the tall coat-wearing man who carried a cane as if apart of some fashion statement than necessity. Sarah eyed his appearance before taking the liberty to fill him in, "Not much, Sir. We have just delved into the finer details of what there is to be hunted, sit down if you like."
Shajiir Sisters (played by Miss)

Shion's foot idly tapped against the flooring of the tavern, her geta making a soft thunking sound. Her forearms were still placed against the counter top, her bright blue gaze drifting to the male in the long coat and cane, her shoulders rising sublty. To the dwarf's words, Shion's blue eyes drifted to the side of her vision, "Uh huh." Her head canters to the side, her bright gaze upon the gathered individuals and their table. Without turning around, she says to the dwarf, "You have any milk in the kitchen? I'll buy some, if you do."

Shion's sharp lips quirk into a smirk, her left hand grasping her right arm's elbow, her right hand lifting up to touch her fingers against her chin, her legs crossing idly, her right foot's geta tapping idly at the flooring, her bright, blue gaze settling on the gathered individuals and their table.
Ravavyre (played by TheCourtJester)

A dwarf after my own heart Ravavyre thought when the man's eyes lit up at the sight of the gold piece. "Thank you very much, hopefully i will come back with more of those. And then I will buy you another round." Her elongated ears twitched and perked, tuning in on the other Drow's tale as soon as the dwarf pointed out who posted the notice. Normally this half-drow would wait until the conversation was over, but she figured the full blooded one would not like to repeat herself. She would stride over and lean against the wall, tilting her head to the side.
"A powerful creature wanted alive, eh?" She commented more to herself than to anyone else. "Not really my forte, but it sounds damn interesting enough that I would love to tag along." She grinned and tilted her head to the side, unusual green eyes locked onto the femme drow. It isn't often that she runs into one of her own, after all. "If you would have me, I would love to accompany you. I am not doing much, and perhaps i could be of use, one way or another."

The dwarf held up an index finger to the woman. "Jess' a moment," he told her, before hopping off of the bench behind the bar, head disappearing from the loss of height. The double doors behind the bar swung open and shut as the innkeeper disappeared into the back; milk was kept in the cellar where it would stay chilled.

The mug of goat's milk reappeared before the dwarf did, lifted onto the far edge of the counter before the dwarf climbed back onto his platform and slit it towards the woman. "Drinks are a copper, tho' th' first's free if'n yee take a room for a silver." He disappeared again before waiting for her answer; there were other patrons in the bar waiting to be served as well.

~~~~~
((( @ Everyone else )))
"I'd rather not explain the details until we're out of the city," Rynnion told them. "It's best if the locals don't know what's wandering in their forest and try to take matters into their own hands... both for their sake and my contract. And besides... I haven't accepted any of you yet. I'm not about to promise a share of my gold to someone who might be more hindrance than help," she stated, a particularly critical glance lingering on Steve for a few seconds.
The conversation was interrupted, briefly, by the arrival of the innkeeper. Three pewter mugs were bundled into one fist, which he set down on the table first to free a hand for the two bowels balanced on his palm and forearm. The bowels and two mugs he placed in front of the human and half-elf; stew and cider to match that that Rynnion held in front of her. The third mug was left for the human male, filled with a darker brown liquid than what the other patrons had received. "Jess' let me know if yee need anythin' else," he stated, untucking two fresh pairs of forks and knives from the pouches of his apron and setting them on the table before turning back towards the bar.
Rynnion sighed, spearing a soggy potato chunk from her own mostly-cooled stew with her knife and chewing on it while he waited for the dwarf to drift out of earshot; her fork was still resting on the table unused. "So... what it comes down to," she mumbled, bite shuffled to one cheek so that she could speak, "is what each you can offer the quest."
Tarsus Vervuek (played by Lolctopus)
"I believe I will."
The strangely dressed man gave a short, respectful bow to the woman and pulled up a chair. A few copper were placed silently on the table, pinched between black-gloved fingers from a leather belt pouch - enough for the brandy and one more besides, in customary tip for prompt service.
He unstraps his collar and rolls it down to just beneath his chin. It hides no peculiarities or deformities, only sharp, angular features, slightly sunken cheakbones, and a bit of a five o'clock shadow of dark stubble. Pewter glass is brought to lips and drained with substantial vigor, swilling his brandy like a man in a hurry.
Like their potential paymaster, he scrutinized his prospective party members. The second sight imparted by his strange brass eyepieces revealed nothing terribly out of the ordinary. Either they were as mundane as they made themselves out to be or were skilled at hiding their true natures and talents; the sorcerer took neither conclusion for granted. That being said, he was not particularly impressed either, and able to divine little. He did file the human woman away in the back of his mind as potentially competent; she at least was asking the right questions, and that counted for something.
"What can I offer? What indeed." He seems to think on his answer for a few moments, swirling his drink in his glass with a light to-and-fro motion of the hand. "I'm not sure I prefer to divulge the entirety of my talents.. here. What you need to know is that you are hunting dangerous quarry, and I myself am a tracker - after a fashion. It is my business to find that which is hidden, to seek those who do not which to be found, and to know things that I am not supposed to."
Frustratingly vague, he knew, so he decided to make his assertions a little more concrete. "Sellswords, trackers, bounty hunters. Assistance required for dangerous prey, even share of hansom reward for each member. Settled residents need not.. etcetera, etcetera."
It was the text of the message the drow woman had posted not moments ago. Verbatim. "Ask yourself how I read that when I've been upstairs since you put nail and notice to board." And indeed he had been; there was no way to see or read the board's contents through the upstairs windows, nor was there a proper way to get outside from there without going downstairs and passing through the inn's main seating area.
Shajiir Sisters (played by Miss)
Shion’s hands rest at her sides, her hands turned about and resting their palms against the counter-top’s edge, her bright, blue gaze drifting to look over her shoulder, as the dwarf fetched her drink. Shion’s bright, blue gaze drifts back towards the man in the long coat, her right foot tapping its geta idly against the wood floor.
Shion’s sharp lips quirked into a smirk, her left hand finding purchase upon a pouch near her obi. Her left hand’s fingers open the pouch’s drawstring, her thumb pushing aside the larger coins until her index finger and thumb pinch a copper coin, pulling it out of the bag. Settling the coin upon her thumb, tucked under her index finger, Shion’s thumb springs upward, the coin being sent over her form, and landing with a clink, before rolling about and laying itself flat.
Shion’s left hand tightens the drawstring to her pouch, while her bright, blue eyes drift towards those gathered at the table once more, “I don’t think I’ll be spending the night here.”
Steve Ruggles (played anonymously)
Stevie shrugged one shoulder. "Eh, I dun' blame ya. Guessin' it makes sense not to divulge when yer not sure if we're even cut out for the job." With that, the Halfling leaned back in her chair and looked up pensively.
"Hrm... what can I offer?" she thought aloud. "Well, I'm small. I'm pretty fast and hard to catch. N' I'm pretty proud of my ability to sneak around and squeeze in small places. I'm obviously not very strong, but I got me a good blade elsewhere that I can use." After saying that, it was clear she wasn't sure if she fit the bill or not. Sure, she thought she was useful! But she was biased that way. Truth be told, she wasn't even very sure if she would even need to utilize these abilities!
Her eyes, still thoughtful, looked up to the strange man who recited a good chunk of the ad. What little hope she had of getting in on this vanished, feeling she'd never be as impressive as that. Oh well! She tried.
((Sorry that took so long!))
Sarah (played by Unicorn)
Needless to say, Sarah was impressed by the deductive skills and overall somewhat creepy intelligence of the cloaked man. He was certainly someone to keep an eye on, she could sense something off about him but couldnt place her finger on it. Briefly distracted by the dwarf's reappearance with a bowl of stew and a mug of something to drink, she hummed thoughtfully while musing over how to answer Rynnion's request for wanting to know what they could offer. Stevie was given an acknowledging glance, being quick and stealthy could be useful but it all depended on what sort of creature they were to be hunting. They might need more brute force than cunning, or maybe it was the other way around.
"I'm a Huntress, have been for a good portion of my life. I know how to hunt plenty of game, whether it be prey or person. I know how to traverse different terrain, set traps and survive on my own. If whatever you're after is indeed wanted alive, I could probably orchestrate a means to bring it about." She shifts in her chair and takes a few bites of the stew, savoring the broth and the mixture of vegetables and meat.
The dwarf took the copper coin as he passed the woman on his way back from the table in the corner, pocketing it before starting to shuffle back towards the bar; the local patrons had begun to filter in through the door with the setting sun outside. "Jess' let me know if yee needin' anythin' else, lass," he said.
~~~~~

"I'd advise you keep that particular talent to yourself," Rynnion told the oddly dressed man, pointing an finger at him for a moment with the kitchen knife still threaded through the other three. She already knew what he was; the same sort of sense that his goggles provided was a natural ability of her species, and in that vision he had the unmistakable energy of one who studied the arcane. "What do we have to work with, then..." she mussed aloud, scanning over the Steve, Sarah, and Tarsus in turn. "A thief, a tracker, a..." Her words lingered for a moment on the human male; calling him a "scryer" or "sorcerer" would be about as conspicuous "witch" or "heretic" in their present setting. "I suppose that leaves guard duty up to us elves, though a more... traditional warrior could be useful as well..." She let her gaze drift back towards the bar; the foreign-looking human woman standing there had been eyeing them throughout their conversation.

"Either way, it appears we have the makings of a decent band of brigands," she stated. "Five sets of hands for a difficult task."
Tarsus Vervuek (played by Lolctopus)

"A thief, a tracker, a.."

"An itinerant scribe and researcher. If anyone asks. An excellent lie by virtue of happening to be true." He finishes the extended pause at the end of her sentence for her, in a low and somewhat conspiratorial tone not likely to be heard outside their numbers.

The 'scribe' polishes off his brandy in short order, giving a brief nod the drowess' way to thank her for her discretion. As he stands he compulsively smooths the fabric of his overcoat, and sets the empty glass back to the counter.

"Excellent. Give me a minute to get my kit together and I'll be ready to set off."
Rynnion (played by Morhe) Topic Starter

"Not just yet," the dark elf told him. "It wouldn't do to set out in the evening, and I'm paid for the night anyhow. I'm setting out tomorrow morning, to give you and the other interested parties time to prepare kits supplies."
Shajiir Sisters (played by Miss)

Shion's forearms push off of the counter-top, her form turning about, her long legs sliding around the stool. Setting her rump upon the seat, Shion's shoulders rise in an abrupt shrugging motion, before her shoulder settle and her left hand wiggles its fingers in-between the pouch, that sat upon her obi, and pinching her fingers about a silver piece. Her left hand deftly places the silver coin upon the counter-top, sliding it forward. "I guess I'll be spending the night. I'll take the room closest to the stairs."

Shion's left hand draws the pouch's drawstrings tightly, before her right hand slides its fingers about the mug's handle, lifting it easily to her lips. Her head tilts back, audible gulping sounds hastily draining half of the milk. Shion's right hand places the mug back on the counter-top, the cool milk inside sloshing softly. Her head turns to the side, her breath coming in rapidly to her lungs, her tongue catching the remnants of the milk from around her lips, her bright, blue gaze closing briefly.

Shion's bright blue gaze opens, slowly, her form facing the counter-top once again, her elbows being placed on the counter-top, her fingers laced about her cheeks, holding her head up, the mug of milk in-between her elbows, "Mm~" Shion's sharp lips quirk into a smirk.
Steve Ruggles (played anonymously)

A thief? Awh. Oh well, she supposed that's exactly what she was. She liked the term "acquirer;" it was much classier sounding.

She supposed she'd need to use a little of what money she had left to purchase a room. She'd have to continue to scrimp even more but it wouldn't be a thing she couldn't do. The little Halfling relaxed a little bit when she heard the last statement that followed her listing what each individual was capable of. That meant she was content with who was interested?

Did that mean she was needed? The young woman's face lit up brightly. This was far too exciting! Although she was broke as all hell, and the money interested her, it was mainly the adventure that appealed to her, she decided.
Rynnion (played by Morhe) Topic Starter

((( We seem to have stalled somehow... I'm not sure if people are losing interest or if I'm just not building enough for people to respond to... I'll give one more post and then possibly time-skip to the next morning to get things moving, and see who all is still interested in continuing. )))

"A'right," the dwarf responded, taking the silver coin with a short nod. "I'll 'ave someone make certain it's clear for yee."

~~~~~
The odd collection of races around the table didn't respond; most seemed to be chewing over her offer. Admittedly, it wasn't much of an offer: nonspecific pay for hunting a nonspecific creature. But she wasn't about to jeopardize her mission by explaining the essentials before they were out of the city, and knew that at least one person would be daring, or foolish, enough to follow through.
"You have until tomorrow morning to decide if you'll be claiming a share of the reward," she stated, "and gather what food and supplies you wish to bring on the journey if you decide to accompany us. We'll meet here in the inn in and depart in the morning."
