Alright, I know I haven't posted on here in a while so before anything gets started I'd like to apologize for my absence. Apparently forum RP is not something I'm up to >.<! On to the meat, however...
I've been a part of IMVU and its role play community for some time. It did not take me long to notice our dwindling numbers, however, but something else that caught my attention was the lack of role players' willingness to download and play on that platform. Yes, it's a money-grubbing company and yes, if you are imaginative enough you should have no problem describing your character and the setting without the 3D environment -- but at the same time, you get to use that environment as a catalyst, a permanent "welcome message", as the old IRC rooms called them.
While I understand that there are a lot of horny teenagers looking for adult role play there, it becomes easier and easier to spot said children and avoid them altogether. Hell, that danger is everpresent, no matter where you go.
The advantage to IMVU? Well, it's a real-time chat where, given you pay a little bit of money, you can make your own room with your own rules, give moderation abilities to anyone you like; You get to play dress-up and build your room to look and feel however you like. Some of the RPers are noobs, and I do use that term hesitantly, but a lot of them are trying to get themselves up to par.
Disadvantages are a rather short list: It's 3D so older computers might have an issue with this. There are those aforementioned horny kids. Then, there's a 10-person-limit on room size... but that's easily superseded by the room's owner inviting anyone else who wants to join (and if they want to join, they can simply invite the owner to a PC (Private Chat) and ask for entrance).
So... I guess I just want to discuss this possibility. I'd really like to see this platform take off as a haven for role play in much the same way RPR has.
Also, you can make a real-world living off of IMVU (even though it's not common, it is possible).

Okay, let's look at RPR groups.
There's a real time chat.
It's freeeeeee.
You can give moderation abilities to anyone you like.
You can build your room to look and feel however you like.
Some RPers are noobs, but a lot of them are trying to get themselves up to par.
It doesn't need to be downloaded and installed.
Older computers have no problem with it!
Membership has no limit!
Has a good reputation!
The fact is, that there are MANY MANY other platforms that offer the same or more than IMVU. It's not known as a RP platform.
Personally, I'm really hesitant to install software. It's just a hassle to install something I may only use once or twice before giving up on it. That is the main reason I won't use it.
wait wait ... there's a chat on RPR? Like, a live chat? not a refresh-manually-to-find-out-if-your-party-posted chat, but live?
Yes! At the bottom of every topic press 'Launch Chat' and that topic will instantly transform into a live chat!
As a group owner you can even specify one topic in your group to be a 'chat thread' so the 324234 updates won't spam up everybody's dash.

Oh, but this isn't a live chat xD it's just a popped-out forum. It will probably refresh at a pretty high rate but that's what I try to avoid x_x
then again... i could be wrong o-o *testing this*
Hey
I'm pretty sure it's live
xD hi! sorry about the disbelief, but wow I was so not expecting this @_@
Also holy crap that forum spam xD hope nobody minds >.<
