( don’t usually participate in these events but this was too good to pass up).
They say they're born this way every few generations or so. No wings, but more magic. So much magic! Too much magic! Enough magic that their skin glows and if they're not careful it could kill them. Them or someone they love. Your character has to work hard to restrain or perhaps siphon off his magic in order to make life manageable. His kin are range from wary to out right terrified of him and perhaps he's even been banished to the mortal realms so that he doesn't risk damaging the fae and their realm when he finally succumbs to his fate.
Going with the idea of Tinkerbell-sized fairies:

He lost his wings in an accident or attack when he was younger, and as a result has always struggled to keep up with his kind. This has lead him into new and interesting paths of magic and science, out of a burning resentment that he is considered "less" for being wingless.

A fairy without wings is a highly restricted being - even moreso than a human born without legs or arms. While the other fairies are zipping about at breakneck speeds, this fairy is slow and earthbound. And while this made him jealous and angry in his youth, now that he's a little older he's embraced his differences - going slow means he has more time to observe the world, to notice small things, and to read - he is leagues smarter than the average fairy, although it is hard to turn the pages of those human-sized books.

One day, while walking through the fairy village he notices a crack between two rocks which the other fairies have flown past 1000s of times before. He peers down into the darkness... discovering the vast unknown (obviously intelligently designed) caverns that run beneath the entire town.
